We drove out to my friend's winter cabin. Whilst there, it snowed a bit. This is our attempts at getting home.

DK 4Life the best winter tires in the world are nit going to help much in those conditions,It's more about the power and 4x4 system/diff lock
@vlad18897 жыл бұрын
Deflate the tires, it looks like you are running at least 35+ psi. Drop it to 25 next time. It's still safe to drive and you get better traction.

People confuse these modern all wheel drive systems with 4 wheel drive systems, they are not the same thing. These new systems generally apply power only to the wheels that have traction to save on gas consumption. When the system detects slippage, it stops sending power to those wheels and applies it to the other ones. The problem is, you don't have all four wheels engaged when you NEED them to be. The main reason I bought a 'pre' 1999 AWD Astro van equipped with a 'locking' rear diff is because the always engaged four wheel drive system. This is why there are guys who mount snow plows on these things. While it may eat a bit more gas, the peace of mind knowing I won't get stuck in the snow is worth it.
@kurtratzlaff87325 жыл бұрын
Agreed: The 'modern' AWD systems, i learned, have a computer simulated 'locking axles'...what I found out on this trip is the system works perfect driving in light snow or sand/mud, but if you are stuck and have a lot of weight on just 2 tires with the other 2 basically hanging, there's a torque limit, and a 'stuck' situation easily exceeds the torque limits to transfer power from the hanging tires to the traction tires and suddenly you have useless open diffs. The Astro/Blazer/Silverado 4x4's from the 1990's came with the GM "G80" locking rear end which would have really helped here. This trip was a large learning experience, and I'm glad everyone came out with only their pride damaged...

i still reccomend, buy Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5, continental vikingcontact 7, Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 2, Bridgestone Blizzak Ice, Hankook Winter I*Cept, Pirelli P Zero Winter and so on.

I don't know if you have all season tires or winter tires on your BMW. Nice vehicle!!! I use blizzak tires on my subaru and highly recommend with snow and icy conditions with AWD. I used them going down a hilly asphalt road with ice on top and it did stop with little slide. I was very amazed on the performance of these tires. Just a suggest if you like to look in on a good set of winter tires.

if you're in 4wd and engine braking, it would brake better, but using the disc brakes, it obviously would not.

the problem was that there was we broke through the thin layer of ice on top and found about 3 feet of powder underneath. Each time we broke through the X5 sank straight to the frame and the tires just spun freely in the powder underneath.. even the pickup trucks with lifts didn't make it, was a poor choice in road.

@@amdowney if i remember correctly, 2004 was the first year for the 'halo' headlights on the X5, which mine has, as well as the first year for Xdrive, well, also a new 6-speed auto for the V8, but mine had the 6-speed manual with the 3.0 I6
@aidenp57685 жыл бұрын
2004 U.S still had orange side turning signal lights, Europe had the clear ones. But it’s still the Face lift. It’s clear from the front. The headlights are noticeable and sharper than the 2003. Xdrive was introduced in 2004 for the X5 and E83 X3. The X5 E53 lost the 4X4 system for the Xdrive. The original X5 had a ability to switch from 2WD to 4X4 by the DSC button. The face lift only allows more control with the DSC button. The ground clearance is 7.9 inches compared to 10.2 inches for the new X5 2019. 222HP pre face lift-225HP for the face lift.

@ryanpooler39623 жыл бұрын
I know this is an older video. I too have a manual X5. With snow tires in Northern Utah I have gone everywhere through just about everything... including pulling a loaded trailer up deep snow inclines that my co-worker's GMC 2500 HD could not. I've pulled several vehicles stuck in snow banks, ditches, etc, including jeeps, and trucks. I've driven a 600 mile back road detour through a Texas/Oklahoma ice storm that had I-40 and surrounding interstates packed up for hundreds of miles in every direction just before Christmas. The X5 doesn't get the credit it deserves in heavy snow conditions and moderate off road conditions for a bunch of reasons. (No low range gear box, no locking differentials, ground clearance, its on road performance orientation, etc). I totally get it. Put the right tires on it will get you through some pretty nasty stuff unmodified. It is a capable machine within reasonable limits.

@kurtratzlaff87327 жыл бұрын
Probably would; the X5 and pickups are too heavy for their tire size, and kept falling to the bottom and getting hung up (snow was 3-5' deep until you got to pavement) a local drives an old beat up Suzuki Samurai with really good tires and he could literally go anywhere he wanted, he said in these conditions, the lightweight Suzuki is unbeatable and I assume a Wrangler would be the same.

But life is more valuable and worth to spend money to proper winter tires. Do you know that, if weather is example 2 degress pluss, then winter tire ise better than summer tire even in darmac ? I watch many winter crashes and chaoses videos what take place in usa. And i see same thing all the time. People don't use proper winter tires and result is dramatic sometimes. I think, proper winter tires is wort this money, saves lives and make traffic much safer. Also i must say, manual BMW x5 is cool, i like manual too, but i drive front wheel drive Honda :) I have seen manu winter videos in usa, cars trouble on ice and snow, many accidents, difficulties and even dramatic results. They don't use proper winter tires, traffic could be much easier and safer, if they use proper winter tires. Even if most time is no slippery, you don't know, when road conditions change suddenly.

it never gets cold enough in southern California. today (10 November) it was 98F (36C) in Los Angeles. in January it is usually in the 50's (10C). I agree winter tires are better, but there is no winter in Southern California.
@slappy89417 жыл бұрын
Nothing but a serious 4x4 with big tires and locking differentials will work in that kind of snow.
@kaliikleja7 жыл бұрын
Why you don't use proper winter tires, i mean real good winter tires. Example some Continental, Nokian, Goodyear, Bridgestone and some other good winter tires, what is meant to be use in north. I say, good winter tires change much, my own experience. I live in North in Europe and many people in here, using even studded tires, me too. Some people use not studded tires here, but they have still good winter tires what is meant to be used in north. Here we have law, what says, we must use winter tires on winter, studded or not, but winter tires.

I live in southern California. It's the 4th of November and 86 today (30C). It doesn't snow anywhere within 100 miles of my house. It hardly gets cold. Difficult to justify the cost of a second set of tires for an occasional trip up the mountain to visit the snow.

I refuse to buy an automatic, and this was one of the last suv available with a clutch. I have a boat that weighs 5500 pounds, and nothing available with a clutch can tow that much outside of a nissan/ toyota (bleh) or a Porsche Cayenne (good luck finding one with a manual) . I have an X5 purely because there are so few options out there with a manual transmission.
@kurtratzlaff87327 жыл бұрын
I've bought strictly manuals until 6 months ago I went for a Mercedes SL500 and 4 months later it started having transmission issues. My roommate bought a VW Golf new in 2013 with the 6 speed auto and 39,000 miles later about two months ago its having major issues, out of warranty of course. My supervisor at work just traded in his 2010 Audi A5 because of transmission issues. Sure auto's are much smoother than they used to be but reliability is too low and cost of repair is too high to sway me from my clutch.
