Stripping down and repairing an N63B44 BMW V8 from an E70 X5 50i petrol. The vehicle was consuming around 3 litres per 1000km! A BMW dealer had previously had the heads reconditioned and replaced the turbos. Upon stripping the engine to replace valve stem seals and further inspect for wear, we found that the valve guides had massively excess free play, allowing the valve to move around inside it. This males the valve wear through the stem seals, then with both the seal and the guide oversized, oil is able to easily bypass and be drawn into the inlet and exhaust ports. This vehicle was like a James Bond car driving it down the road and hitting the throttle! You can see in the video the amount of oil inside the intake manifold too. The heads were sent away to be reconditioned (again) and the machine shop said that the guides had not been replaced previously, and had not had inserts installed either. The heads were reconditioned and the engine reassembled with fresh gaskets, seals, and fluids. One of the timing chain guides was also replaced as it was cracked, and the engine timing was set. The engine was refitted into the car and ran great without blowing anymore smoke.

Such an insightful video! Let me ask, do the REPLACEMENT valve seals and guides have documented certification they are capeable to take the heat stress the N63 generates or are they simply identical BMW stock replacements as the ones that failed? I look forward to your reply as I own a G30 with this N63 powerplant with 20k miles that has excessive oil consumption. 😲

hello Four Rings Auto, can a car burn 1 liter of oil per 500 km and no blue smoke on the tailpipe? i have this kind of problem whit my passat 2001, 1.6 ALZ petrol engine, the oil just dissapears from the oil pan, the engine works fine, pass all the emissions test, but 1 liter of oil every 500Km is missing...if the guides and the valve stems are worn, there should be blue smoke right?there is a difference of sympthoms between a cracked head, a blown headgasket ? i have no overheating problems, except the oil is present in coolant reservoir, but i did changed the oil cooler as well, still the oil is burned,is some kind of difference between oil burned through rings and oil burned through valve guides?thanks

Thanks. Unfortunately the dealers are limited by what the manufacturer stipulates what can and cannot be repaired. BMW don't supply the valve guides as a spare part, so my machine shop makes their own. A dealership would have to replace the whole cylinder head if they knew the guides were this worn. The machine shop they used to do the work didn't do anything to rectify the valve guide issue.

I have a '15 X5 50i xdrive Msport burning excessive oil (2 qts every 500-1000miles) now for the last year. I realize it is probably the same issue you just repaired. So, do I go ahead with the repair and spend $1000s or just sell it? I already had this issue with a 2011 550i xdrive Msport and BMW, through a class action lawsuit, replaced my engine for free (and then I sold it after the tranny failed at 65k). Or should I see if there is another class action for the N63 4.4l?

@@blackericdenice Nope this has been a BMW problem since the days of the N62. Both the N62 and N63 were notorious for this issue and it was a build issue. None of their I6 motors did this with the same oil change intervals. The N63 is and was a nightmare of an engine. From the insane heat soak issues by shoving the turbos within the V of the motor to injector failures and valve seal this engine is not a long term engine.

yes BMW does. dont listen to these mechanics. one must really go to the experts on the bimmer forums where the real bmw technicians live. BMW has ruined their reputation in my opinion by putting out there atrocious 8 cyl engines the last 2 decades, They did however overhaul the N63 in 2014-2018 and named it n63TU. I cant recall which exact models received this engine but I do know the 2014 -2018 7 series has them. I have my 2015 750li which has been rock solid for me. she is at 73,000 miles. before that I had the 2008 750...which was a horror story. if your going to buy used, be wise and get a Dealership CPO one. anyways, I find it hilarious on these mechanics on youtube who just state whatever they hear without checking the facts. Rely only on BMW guys who only work BMWs for your information gathering. cheers!

Other than that though the engine runs smoothly. But I'm burning about 1 litre per 850KM. Some people online are saying all the damage is because of how hot these engines run? And that you should switch the thermostat from the original 105c to 90c. But could heat really do that to the guides.. ? I thought all engines are supposed to operate at 100c+..

The N63 is a trash motor. We had it in our 2012 750Li which burned one to two quarts of oil a month. The engine finally ate itself and BMW replaced it for about $5500. The oil light illuminated no less than about two weeks after getting the car back from repair. I was sick of putting money into German made trash so we got rid of it and bought a new GMC Denali that will last 500,000 miles before ever displaying an issue.

Why do the valves wear so bad? Is there an upgrade to the guides that will allow them to last longer?
@FourRingsAuto
@FourRingsAuto 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure. Poor design is likely, or too soft metal used for the guides. Too long service intervals also can't be helping. The guides can't be purchased from BMW so our head rebuilder makes their own. Whether this prevents it reoccurring I'm not sure yet. Time will tell.

BMW is currently replacing my Valve Stem Seals, Rear Main Seal, and Oil Pan Gasket on their dime because of the class action lawsuit associated with the N63 Engine excessive oil consumption. My car was using, on average, one quart per 800 miles. 2011 750Li ActiveHybrid 7 with only 66,000 miles. Car was using oil when I bought it with 49,000 miles.

The Oil Consumption Test is in a recent Technical Service Bulletin. Call your Dealer and have them look up TSBs associated with your car. If you have an N63 motor, your car should qualify for the free oil consumption test. If they determine that your vehicle is using excessive oil, they'll determine what is causing the oil leak, and then send that info to BMW to approve the work. This is how it was explained to me.

@@ivanrodriguez9270 The dealer told me there was a Service Bulletin out for my car called an oil consumption test. I had been monitoring the oil consumption since I bought the car (I logged the odometer reading every time the low oil light came on), and so they took my info and did whatever they did and told me that BMW USA was approving the work to fix the oil leak. Long story short, you don't have to say anything except ask what Service Bulletins are open for your car. If the Oil Consumption test is one of them, ask them to do it.

BMW is trash. It shows when you buy a $105,000 car that depreciates $85,000 in three years. Then only worth $10,500 the fourth year. Japanese and American built cars are engineered much better and hold their value much longer.

As a BMW owner, I'm embarrassed at this overly complicated, poorly designed engine. It's ridiculous that car manufacturers get away with producing engines with so many design flaws. The root cause is probably insufficient cooling and insufficient oil flow to the guides, resulting from the hot-v architecture. I'm surprised that you didn't change all of the chain guides, since they were accessible. They are all made of the same cheap plastic, so no doubt more of them will fail.
