Things I like about the X5. 1. Design 2. Engines 3. Comfort 4. Fun to drive 5. 7 Seats I would never take an X5 to serious off-road, for that I got a Suzuki Vitara.

I live in argyle and bute in scotland i used to have the old style bmw x5, parts to expensive to replace..got a CITROEN XSARA PICASSO in 2002 and still used it to this day does everything the x5 could do. exept not to great in deep mud. Have driven it through floods,down forest tracks and down grass slopes..best car ever fraction of the price of the bmw.

You don't buy this car for off-roading. You buy it for big families that like big trips, occasional off(isn) roaring i.e. muddy lanes & county show & that's it. Most dads still like 'a blast' and a decent drive but when you have 4 kids like me, compromise is part of the course. X5 is it.

@libetta Except for the diesel engine,the acura mdx is also is known for those things.And the acura is actually comfortable,the x5 is known for putting handling over comfort,resulting in a stiff ride.

You are absolutely right ,,, Range Rover is the king of lemons!! I had one 2010 HSE edition,,dont get me wrong is a very luxurious car,,,very Posh too,,but since BMW dropped them ,,and Ford took over THEY ARE nothing but lemmons!! Mine stayed most of the time in the shop,it came to a point that the dealer gave up!! And gave me all money back,,Buy back Lemon!! But ill tell you for the time that was on the road ,,boy that thing was a nice catch for women,,, lol lol.

@libetta Which car are you refering to,the lexus or the bmw,because both won motortrend suv of the year.The acura beat the x5 for 2001 suv of the year.So you can't really say the x5 was more of a sucess.Also even in the european suv world it wasen't the first high performance suv,that title goes to the mercedes ml,which also managed to feature a real 4wd system with low range.It also had a third row seat,way before the x5 did.

The X5 is amazing to drive on the road. For handling and performance it will leave the range rover whimpering. Yes the range rover has a much more comfortable ride and road presence but it rolls like crazy in the corners and fuel costs are mental if you go for the V8. The Porsche Cayenne is quicker and handles just as well but the big price tag and personally the looks put most people off. The X5 is not a contender off road though.

@libetta The suspenion may be more advanced,but suvs that size that handle don't ride well.Also based on testing done by consumers guide,america makes the best riding full suvs in the world,the gave the suburban an 8 out of 10 while the second generation scored worse then 5 out 10,the expedtiton got a 6.In order to make an suv handle well they have to make the suspension stiff,which is why non performance suvs usally ride better.

In all its ugliness. 2) I think the diesel is the most refined engine ever. Fast and incredibly economical (for a 2 tons suv) 3) Try a Tuareg. It's way more comfortable. Ah but avoid bends if you care your life 4) Dunno what you mean with diving it 5) lot of space (I dont understand why you specced 7 seats) 6) ??? why you bought a car you don't like?

@rangerover06sc you're wrong... apart from the so called improved comfort ... the RR has no other real advantage over the X5 on road. The X5 is comfortable enough, but it also can be driven to the edge when needed to. The engines are far superiour to those of the RR... and as for the luxury.... before the 2010 facelift... the RR Vogue was still using 1998 BMW Navigation Systems and random buttons. Interiour design is a matter of taste... but the german ergonomy is obviously better.
