This was asking for trouble. Plan ahead for the turns on slippery roads, take your foot off the gas well in advance and use the engine to slow you down, not the brakes. In any case, summer tyres in these conditions is a disaster. My first drive to Austrian Alps was on “All Season” tyres, it was snowing but everything was fine until I pulled into a lay-by which hadn’t been treated with salt/grit and had a layer of fresh snow; the car just slid across it but luckily stopped before I hit anything. I bought a set of winter tyres next day (Continental TS 850 Winter Contact) and the difference was incredible. They held the turns and stopped on slippery roads almost as if there was no snow or ice. Be careful about trusting “All Season” tyres, and if you do choose them, be sure that they have the snowflake symbol (mine just had the M+S symbol for mud & snow.) They’re better on snow/ice than summer tyres , but they are more appropriate for climates that see moderate snow in winter. In serious snow/ice like the Alps, they are no substitute for real winter tyres.

The filming vehicle is way too close! The gap is much less than a second, probably half a second. That gap should be 4-5 seconds in these conditions. The other driver had their own crash and they're at fault. However, I can't discount the possibility they felt pressure to go faster than they were comfortable with because of the tailgating.

@@ramezaziz2336 Most of the time, you should be anticipating things ahead of the car in front or you've failed already. That aside, yes, if the car in front starts slowing suddenly the gap is for the distance _you_ cover before you react which, unprompted, is up to 1 second. The rest of the time is for managing how hard you can brake against the conditions and in relation to any vehicle behind. Your comment implied that if a vehicle can't stop quickly due to bad conditions you can go closer to it. That's insane!

Everyone is hating on the car filming but he obviously is driving within his vehicles capabilities in this situation. The other car went off the road because they had tires that weren't meant for winter driving, the car filming on the other hand was able to get stopped safely and stay on the road at the same speed that the other car was going.

Best to slowly release your accelerator because you’re letting the car’s momentum ease into the turn while understeering. Once you’re out of the turn, then apply a little more gas to regain momentum. I’ve been doing this technique for years and on icy major highways. But yeah, never brake hard while you’re going on a turn. If you have to brake, just tap lightly to decrease the speed and let the momentum take over.

Abs and esc can not save your car when all your tires are slipping. Braking will throw the balance of your car causing a spinout or massive slippage even if you have winter tires or not. It does help but managing your driving skills is also a big factor. Braking when youre slipping is the worse thing you can do as you brake traction of your tires you can not steer. Your brakes are useless if you can not grip whatever surfaces you're trying to stop on. From experience of racing and drifting this is a perfect short explaining not to do and what will happen.
