Looks like you could have done with the Helm that night! You getting on with the compact 1 ok? If you fancy saving some pennies, I took a gamble on Vango’s new Cobra 200 which paid off. I paid £110 for mine. had to finish off a few stitches but it’s a very good value down bag that weighs 700g and is a 2° comfort with a -4° limit. I’ve made a synthetic quilt to go over the top in winter to push the dew point out a bit and up the warmth and now my winter sleep system weighs less than my old winter bag. I’ve only had the chance to test it around the 0-2° mark and without the quilt I’ve never slept better in years of using high end equipment. It was a very wet night but had no condensation issues. I think knowing what temp range suits you is the key. I’m a warm sleeper and anything below a -6 comfort in winter cooks me alive and wets out. Good luck with your search!
@WalkWithWallace4 жыл бұрын
I've only used the Helm Compact once since buying it, will use it more when the colder weather arrives. It would have bossed that wind though. I bought a PHD sleeping bag a few weeks ago in the sale, waiting on it being delivered still. Takes 6-8 weeks. Good to - 6°c apparently. I like the idea of a synthetic quilt to use in winter rather than having a separate sleeping bag.
@lewissaundersguitar4 жыл бұрын
Walk With Wallace 👣 That PHD bag will be worth every penny. I was toying between making my own or going to PHD or UGQ. The Vango solved the problem cheaply as I’m after a more winter suited tent. Truthfully, I want a Scarp but they’re pricey to import so I keep tempting myself with the Helm 1 and pushing it a bit in winter. It’s good to see other doing well with it!
@WalkWithWallace4 жыл бұрын
@@lewissaundersguitar PHD have a great reputation, the one I've ordered only has a half zip, but I'm cool with that. I was tempted with a quilt for ages, like yourself either UGQ or Enlightened Equipment. Also going down the synthetic route with Valley & Peak. I came to the conclusion being a restless sleeper, I didn't want drafts and never had an issues with sleeping bags. Scarp 1 would be a class 4 season tent imo. I'm put off import taxes, although I was lucky with the Trailstar. I reckon the Helm will handle winter fine, I'll maybe by some of those Delta pegs though for peace of mind.
@lewissaundersguitar4 жыл бұрын
Walk With Wallace 👣 It’ll most certainly live up to it as well! I understand your restlessness, I’m the same, that’s why I put the quilt over a bag. Can move around all I want and it stays over me. Can’t be doing with faff in the cold! Will look forward to seeing how you get on with your PHD, it should see you through nicely! I’m going to have a lot of explaining to the Mrs if I go for the Scarp but I think the Helm might slip under the radar 😁 luckily for my wallet they’re both out of stock!

Nice one fellas. Probably tough going underfoot for some of that. Lovely surroundings as always though! I'm sure you know but the Summit to Eat meals have a fill level line marked A,B,C etc.. on the inside. If you're currently measuring out the water it may save you a little hassle if you use the line letter. Hopefully I'm not telling you something you already know!! lol :-) It's written pretty small on the back so we also write the letter on the packet. I'm a little blind especially in low light conditions so that's part of our pre adventure prep. All the best the nooo… D&L :-)
@WalkWithWallace4 жыл бұрын
Cheers D&L, aye it was a bit rough heading off from the loch, but not too bad overall. 😁 Yeah, I marked the fill line on the back of the packet too, but find sometimes you can add too much or too little water as it absorbs quickly into the food. Hi, great video. I've never done the cairngorms before and will put it on my list. I have a Lunar Solo by six moons and agree that the tie out on the panels are really important in higher winds. I also added some grip clips by Gram counter from Ultralight outdoor gear on the largest panel to add some support there, works a charm. The most difficult thing with that tent is finding enough space I think. It's only a one man but the area it requires is quite significant. Thanks for the video.

Thanks Peter, you'll love the Cairngorms. Proper backpacking country. 😁 I've just had a look at those grip clips, they look idea, thanks for the tip, I'm goimg to buy some today. What length are you guylines for the side tie outs? The Lunar Solo is spacious for a 1 man tent, so does have a bit of a larger footprint. Great tents though.
@PMarsh144 жыл бұрын
@@WalkWithWallace Glad I could help out. I'm not certain how long the guy lines are precisely but I made them a little longer, especially on the side I lay my head because I use a second trekking pole to wrap the line around to hold the tie out further and gives more head room inside the tent. I hope this makes sense.

Nice one guys. Didn’t look too busy? How long was it from Linn to Beinn Bhrotain? Went to that pitch in East Lothian the other day and saw a lanshan 1 and thought maybe it was one of you fellas! Great to get back out. Cheers
@WalkWithWallace4 жыл бұрын
Linn of Dee car park was busy, but once we set off towards White Bridge it was quiet. Hardly met anyone. It took us roughly 5 hrs 30mins. We did kill a bit of time looking at the snow patches. Someone else camping on the hill fort? Wonder if it's a popular spot? 🤔

Now thats an interesting route i never thought off when you mentioned the "white bridge" i was thinking where the hell is he going? lol! I have always intended in bagging they two Munros from Feshie i thought you where going straight on into Geldie Burn territory. But that is the main reason i love that neck of the woods as there are many different routes to make up as you go along you could walk there a 100 times and never get bored :)
@WalkWithWallace4 жыл бұрын
Never tire of the Gorms. I'd done these from Feshie first time around, so when I'm doing my second round of Munros, I try and mix it up a bit. Geldie is bleak and wind swept, I love it.

Off for a trip in the Highlands next week! Curious, do you ever filter the water in the streams or just drink it as it comes?
@WalkWithWallace4 жыл бұрын
Where you off to? 😁 I carry a filter and used it at the beginning of the video, but I don't bother with filters once high up in the hills away from farmland. Can't beat the taste of fresh water off the Cairngorms. 👌🏼

Great video. Was the initial hike to white bridge ok, or a bit tedious? A lot of folk seem to bike it.

We biked it first time around for Geldie, I'd definitely take a bike for that. But I enjoyed the approach on foot to White Bridge. Much quieter than the Glen Derry approach.

Another great video Robin, I really enjoyed that. The Cairngorms is one area of the UK that I´ve never walked in and I had hoped to walk through on my trip from Carlisle to J.O.G in April but of course, that never happened. It looks like superb mountain walking terrain. ATB, Gary.

@Tweets1224 жыл бұрын
Walk With Wallace 👣 it has a wee (easy to lose) strap thing that can secure it to your mat. There is a stud to secure around your neck as well. I have adapted to the quilt immediately and had exactly the same concerns as yourself. I haven’t had a problem. I am a really restless sleeper as I have a chronic muscle upper arm pain that wakes me sometimes but have found it actually better as I have more room while still being covered. No regrets so far. I did use it during an overnight winter camp but I did have two dogs on either side of me to add to the heat factor :-)
