I play Battletech, occasionally 40k. I also am a dungeon master for D&D. Lastly, I'm always looking for an excuse to play a collection of board games, namely: Betrayal at House On The Hill, Settlers of Catan, and card games like Munchkin and Red Dragon Inn. I still have a robust collection of 3k Magic the Gathering Cards. And I play a bit of everything now that I'm thinking about it. But I really would love to play the 4th edition mechwarrior RPG (Classic Battletech RPG) mainly because I like RPGs and I like Battletech but I only have so much time for either when I could try doing both.

I had a classmate ask me that a tabletop game is, and the best definition I could come up with is "characters and/ or armies and the system that allows them to interact." Being the first person to introduce my 'very' limited social group to TT gaming via battletech, we've not gotten to trying other systems yet, but I'm personally looking into 5e D&D.

So I played traditional rpgs in the years passed. D&D (BEC), AD&D, Champions, Cyberpunk, Call of Cthulhu, the first edition Palladium games, plus Battletech, etc. Took a long break. Started painting minis recently not for wargames, but for RPGs. The only board game with minis that I play is Talisman. My problem is no one to play with. So there's that.

@@WargamerFritz It's not the same... I have a sci-fi rpg campaign ready to go, but folks around here only want to play D&D and 40K. But I will look into talisman online. This channel is among my very favorites. I am working my way through the back catalog and recommend it to all of my old game friends in other states.

It's interesting now that 3d printing exists, because there are freelance artists who design figures and/or files for far less cost and infinite reproductions. GW and other similar companies have competition unlike ever before seen. I wouldn't be surprised if the company took a serious hit because of it. It wouldn't be good if they went under though, despite the unofficial/knockoff mini's being cheaper, because the official rules, models, and balance are fairly important to maintaining the games integrity. However, this new tech (and competition) could actually make the mini's even cheaper from GW itself. Also, it could result in an increase in the quality of the products themselves. I would also love to see GW basically support independent developers who choose to create updated models and purchase their rights, etc. It would probably just make the products better overall. I've actually never really played any TT games of any kind, but have played board games and was a huge RTS fan in the 90s. 40K is literally way too costly. I have like $100 in miniatures, and it's literally 2 squads of guardsmen, a sentinel and a heavy weapons squad. Not exactly cheap.

The original Idea of the first wargames from the 19th century was to train officers for future wars.

I like both but I'm enjoying the closed system of board games more. Also, I will play Five Parsecs from Home on preprinted 1" Square mats instead of using terrain and a ruler.

I play them all, but I prefer the modularity of Wargames usually. Especially ones like Battletech and Gear Krieg that bleed into an RPG as well. So much fun to be had Also first

Hmm... i also have to say, it's not really a topic affecting me so much. I mean, if asked for the priority, i'd put roleplaying first... i had the red D&D box, but soon migrated to The Dark Eye, Shadowrun and visited a loooong list of other RPGs over the years. My only wargame basically is BattleTech, and even for that i read plenty of novels before looking at the game. (Also note: BattleTech always was cost efficient. I started it before even going to university, and while i saw Warhammer stuff during my university times, the costs of starting it already at that time where prohibitive. ) So, being on the pen&paper side with a bit of BattleTech on the side (for years even played as RPG campaign with the Mech combat being part of the campaign), costs are rather low here. On the other hand, i have to admit that the last years i spent some good money on board games. I am generally not that much of a fan of them, but they have some advantages: you can usually play them within a limited timeframe, they usually are more quickly accessible and in many, you can have kids join. All of these help a lot when people have kids. There were a few years where our old group of roleplayers and battletech players saw each other like once or twice a year. The logistical overhead was just too much with small children. As the kids are a bit older now, a board game afternoon became more manageable. Till Covid regulations killed that, of course, but we hope that we can get back to it at some time. So while board games are lowest on the list of what i'd like to play, they have huge logistical advantages and thus took most of my gaming budget of the last years. (Not counting the BattleTech kickstarter, from which i still have a pile of mechs waiting to be painted. :D )

I play both. I prefer wargaming simply because I'm not the "Forever GM" :D But I love both for different reasons.

I have never gone into Warhammer or any other wargame because I already viewed the miniatures as prohibitively expensive. I can by a game on Steam on sale for half the price or less than any miniature GW offers, and that game gives me plenty of play time. Warhammer Total War is a thing that exists. Board games for a one time purchase are vastly cheaper. Heck, there are plenty of wargames out there that don't even use miniatures. Squad Leader uses little cardboard tiles. I play GURPS. You can get pretty much any GURPS rulebook you want online for free, and you can play with anyone anywhere through Roll20, again, for free. There's no reason to give one cent to GW.

In my 40+ years of gaming, I have bought and played a lot of the miniature war games as well as the board games that provide minis. It has come down to this: For board games, I prefer just playing Zombicide and the Aliens Another Glorious Day in the Corps games. For miniature wargames, I prefer to just play Battletech now, with Warmachine/Hordes a close second (soon to be taken over by Star Wars Legion as the new second). I have even used minis from both board and mini games for my sci fi and western RPGs. The only transition I see from board games to wargames is the quality and number of minis provided in the board games, like Zombicide series, Nemesis, Aliens, Star Wars Imperial Assault, etc. Any of these can easily be taken from a board environment and played with 3d terrain either in RPGs or in a wargaming capacity for whichever gaming system is suitable.
