My problem with this list is BGG's definition covers a pretty high percentage of games. Many of the games on the list have some small aspect of tableau building, but it's not a main mechanic or what people usually think of as a tableau builder.

Yeah, it's the main problem with these videos. The game simply has to have some aspect of tableau building to hit the list. This means there's a bunch of games that aren't tableau builders.

Deck building is a sub-set of tableau building, according to BGG.

@@johchadow Really? That's odd. They seem to me to be orthogonal to each other. Like how a game can have card drafting, and you may also use the cards you drafted to build a tableau or do set collection or whatever, but none of those is a subset of the others. But, I'm no expert. I just think the video snapshot was a mistaken reusing of the one from the actual "deck building" video they made before.

Moonrakers is a new-ish game that combines tableau (Deck) building with a munchkin-like fighting/reward-splitting economic system. I don’t have it but have been meaning to get it!

So what is the difference between tableau building and engine building? Many of the games that are labeled tableau building I feel is more engine building..... Terra Mystica, Scythe, etc.

It seems tableau builder is a subgenre of engine builder, where a particular set of cards or tiles are displayed in front of each player. Deck Builder is another subgenre of engine builder, but it is not a tableau builder, as cards are combined in your hand, and not as a display of cards on the table. That's my guess.

Great video! I'd suggest you realign Steph mic a bit, because it was quite a big difference in volume between the two different 'offices'. I personally had to reduce the volume quite drastically from my normal settings, and Mike and Nick sounded almost like they were at a library, at that time. I like your style, though, and it's just a suggestion to make a great video even better. :)

Abyss looks great and it does seem really easy to play, but that's where it trips me up. This game is really difficult to teach to new people because of all of the stupid little things that you have to do and remember. I taught this to my cousin on Thanksgiving and he had trouble getting it at first, like almost everyone I've taught it to. Nope, you can't take that card, yet. First you have to offer it to everyone else at the table and they have to pay you. When you recruit a lord, put the low card under it, but the high card of each race counts for scoring. Yep, that lord has a pretty cool ability, but it's the third key, so you need to take control of an area. It can be a lot, especially for someone that is new to hobby games.

IMO, the order and position of the cards/tiles etc should be relevant in order to make a game a tableau builder because otherwise it's just used to show and organize your income, ressources, collections etc. E.g. concerning wingspan it's highly relevant where to put a bird. E.g. through the ages and terraforming mars....while both belong to my favourite games, the tableau is just there to organize your play better. It could have been done in a different way. Otherwise, you could call every game a tableau builder in which you have your own board. ;-) e.g. I wouldnt call paladins of the west kingdom a tabelau builder either.

Tableau is such a bad word, I prefer combo builder or engine builder (which may not be exactly the same thing) :D Good list though!

I think the illustrations and universe around Abyss are interesting, but for me it is a bit wasted on a kind of otherwise forgettable set collection game. I want these factions and characters to fight and interact in more engaging ways. I think it would work well with a game that used a hand of cards, so you could look closely at everything and read flavour text. Give me a re-theme of Blue Moon with this aesthetic and they couldn’t take my money fast enough.
