mickey boy I actually agree with Ellianne. I have someone in my family who's anorexic. It was a lot worse back then, she didn't even want to eat one raisin, that's how bad it was. It could start like this. It's possible. Edit: this someone wasn't obese before, I noticed that I wasn't clear enough, she has a father that is and she always grew up with this mentality that you need to watch how many calories your food has, that eating candy is the worst you could do etc. Her mother also always complains about "how fat she is" even though she's perfectly normal. She always took us to Weight Watcher's meetings and showed us how important diets are for her. That's one of the few reasons why she became anorexic. She's kinda okay now but she still is a health freak and doesn't allow herself to eat something "unhealthy".

Fat = Bad is the old paradigm (that resulted in the obesity epidemic beginning around 1980). It's starchy foods (bread, macaroni, rice, corn, fries, chips, biscuits, cookies, pastries, soda) along sugars and trans-fat/omega-6 fats that are the villain.

Lydia D - it’s not crazy extreme, but it is a very healthy and maintainable rate of weight loss. You should never lose more than 2 lbs a week unless you’re either a) super morbidly obese (in terms of proportions, people on that end of the weight scale can safely lose a lot more weight a lot faster for the first portion of their journey) or b) under extremely careful supervision by a doctor. When my Lupus was first undiagnosed and the disease caused me to lose weight very rapidly, the doctors weren’t too worried with 5lbs a week for the first few weeks, then they became very keen on drastically slowing the rate. The last month I was in a healthy weight range and still losing 2-3 lbs per week. Then I got diagnosed, was put on chemo, and my weight stabilized. I was incredibly grateful because the next step would have been forcing me to drink those hideous Ensure type drinks, which make me puke. Ugh.

Most of those kids came out of there with one form of eating disorder or another. Many gained all the weight back and more. I know all of them because I was one of the kids in the video. We were all terrified to gain the weight back. Wellspring taught us that there is no such thing as moderation and they preached to us that we should develop a, "healthy obsession", where we should feel really bad if we messed up but not too bad to where we would want to quit. We were meant to aim for 0 grams of fat a day because they told us there was no such thing as a healthy fat, so we desperately tried to fill up on fat free foods, but to our dismay we always failed to adequately satiate our appetites. When we came back home and back into the real world, most of us failed to uphold our new "healthy lifestyles", no matter how long we had stayed at school and subsequent summer camps. We rapidly began to put the weight back on. We felt like it was all our own faults. That it was a character flaw and personal failure, that we had let our families down and waisted everybody's time and money. Really, we were set up for failure from the start with an unrealistic diet and view of healthy living. Some kids ended up with bulimia, anorexia, or bingeing disorders, depression, etc, and needed further treatment for those problems. This school is no longer running.

@@itsizrasroblox having 0 grams of fat a day is unrealistic. Becoming healthier has to be a lifestyle change. So you are saying teenagers are going to live the rest of their lives consuming 0 grams of fat and never eating any junk food ever again? That is so unrealistic. They should be teaching the kids that it is okay in moderation but most of their diet should be clean and good. Also, personally I think the school should be more focused on sugar intake and not fat intake.

But our body needs healthy monosaturated fats and even some saturated fats to function properly. I can't believe some people still believe that eating fat = getting fat

Based on a quick google search, the average cost of taking care of teen in the US is about $13,000 a year. The average cost of private school is about another $12,000 a year. Then one must add in the cost of the coaches, maintaining the cabins, etc. Plus, costs will be more than the average private school because there is likely far fewer students there, so they have to cover the same cost that many more would usually cover. Is it tough for most families to afford? Yes, but is it necessary without some other form of income or stipend, also yes.

Fat is not the issue. Calories are not the issue (although overeating doesn't help). Food choices are the answer. Lean protein, vegetables, good fats like nuts/seeds/avocados, and fruits - in normal, healthy amounts. I lost 20lbs in two months (going from an overweight 185 to a normal 165) on just lean protein and vegetables, lost another ten pounds in the following year, and am still toning/shaping up. I'm basically modified paleo (occasional dairy treats) and I've never been healthy until I changed my diet. I never had the energy to exercise. (Granted, I potentially have NCGS, which I refuse to test for because I refuse to eat gluten daily for six weeks - I'd rather live without it than go through major depressive episodes and severe stomach cramps for six weeks) I like Wellspring's philosophy and how much they actually seem to care about the kids who want it badly enough - but I do agree that they're going about it the wrong way diet-wise. Just my personal two cents. What worked for me may not work for everyone, and that's okay. But a thought - if calories are the only things that matter, by that philosophy you could eat the same low-calorie amounts of baked potato chips or broccoli and still lose weight on just the potato chips. Has anyone actually tried this? I'd like to see the results.
@cokerainbows

***** I went from 238 to 154 pounds in 9 months. Did what you did, cut out wheat and gluten first, then took lactofree drinks, then cut out soy, then milk, then sugar, then caffeine. Also exercised like mad. Still have 28 pounds(at least) to go, getting there!
@cokerainbows

***** I also have had potato chips daily since starting this diet and lost weight, i also ate cheese as well. You CAN eat what you want but you need to burn it off. I was working in two physical jobs whilst exercising at night. I then ended up with muscle wasting because my calories were so low. Started eating gluten free cornflakes to bulk it up and a bit more fruit. They, as a camp, should have a little bit more fat, less carbs and get rid of the bloody dairy, give them something else with calcium in it(i detest dairy for its side effects ) i wonder if they get fatty fish at all? I also ate salmon religiously and still lost weight
@MikiSpeaks
@MikiSpeaks 9 жыл бұрын
cokerainbows THIS. Good for you, dude! It's true - if you do it right, you can eat whatever. I have dance for two hours a week and work out minimum thirty minutes per day almost every day, so my body burns through food like crazy - I'm hungry within three hours after eating one meal no matter how much water I've had, because my meals consist of veggies, meat, and maybe a piece of fruit. In regards to your other comment - I can have organic potato chips once in awhile (apparently potatoes are now paleo), although usually when my body isn't used to something and I eat it, I have major stomach cramps afterwards. I've had to majorly reduce my dairy intake in the last few months because of how bad I feel afterwards. I LOVE salmon - if they don't get proper fats, they're losing out on the HEALTHY way to lose weight...
@cokerainbows
@cokerainbows 9 жыл бұрын
***** I would just take dairy out, it's no good for you, i don't think i've ever felt so good since taking it out my diet. The stomach pain is a major red flag, your stomach clearly isn't liking some of those foods or the dairy. I like to eat more naturally, i'd say my downfall is potato chips(im calling them that even though im used to "crisps", i'm from the UK) but apart from that, i don't think i'm too bad. I'm always shocked by how much humans consume though, a lot of it is really unhealthy and you don't see many people walking around that are very healthy, they are either fat, obese, flabby or super skinny/untoned. Good for you exercising like that though, that takes motivation!

Xeino actually, no, sugar is not the main cause of obesity, it's sugar AND fat. Trans fat is very unnatural and was tested, it turns out that nobody should eat trans fat at all. Sugars are natural, it just depends if you work it off. Natural fat is good for you, fried fats are not. Fried fats are the reason for obesity, as people don't normally work it off. You need natural fat, not fried fats. Learn your facts before preaching that I'm a dumbass, it made you look quite stupid. Also, they shouldn't eat bread? Bread doesn't even have sugar!
@shittyusername.2867
@shittyusername.2867 6 жыл бұрын

Xeino of course I know what they are, dumbass. I just didn't know that sugar was a component. It was a simple mistake. You still don't have much argument at all, what did you say at first? Something unrelated to my original comment, something that you just assumed? Yeah, I won this the moment you commented because you said what I was implying, and even then it was incorrect. Unless you have a valid argument to give to me, this argument is pretty much settled.

Keeping a strict diary of the food they eat everyday...REALLY! This is a recipe for mental health disaster. Eliminating all fats is also a bad idea. When they leave the camp they may either succeed in a healthy way, become anorexic, obsess over food, or given into eating fatty foods that will balloon their weight because they have been denied fat for over a year. I like the idea of this school but I think tweeks need to be made.

Liz Mowrey You need some healthy fats in your diet. Going without fats at all doesn't teach them how to manage their diet outside the camp, since they may want to binge on fatty foods. They need to learn about nutrition, not just to avoid fats completely. A diary is a good idea, as long as it's not obsessive, because that could encourage eating disorders like anorexia.

I love keeping a food diary (and theirs really isn't at all strict). It's a good habit, not any kind of obsession. If I go a little over my calorie range for one meal, it just reminds me to be a little better for the next one. Though I do agree about the elimination of all fats. It's also worth mentioning that to get the weights these kids were at, they may not have been the pinnacle of mental health to begin with. There's definitely a balance that has to be found on both sides of that equation.

To all the people saying it's their parents fault - not necessarily. Weight is a slow gain and the changes happen overtime so it's hard to notice until you look back. actually it's pretty common when you're first losing weight to lose an extreme amount, this is the water weight. However, many weight losers will then become discouraged when the weight loss slows down and they even start gaining weight (muscle mass). For programs like this work, an element of psychology is very important so that healthy habits will be maintained. In my poi ion, the priority goal of any weightless program should always be health.

Watching this made me sick to my stomach and appalled. As a girl who has struggled with anorexia for years, seeing these kids revolve their life around food made me want to help them myself. You see a girl who admits she's terrified of gaining weight and we are suppose to say that is right? Completely removing fats and working out all day long without rest is a recipe for disaster. Not to mention these are kids. They deserve to be kids and enjoy their lives by eating things kids eat. That's not to say those who are obese should not lose weight; it is imminent for their health. But coming from experience, in order to be healthy you have to do it slowly and carefully while also enjoying the life we are given. Religiously counting calories and overworking our bodies ruins our emotional health and give us the impression that we are not good enough if we do not lose weight. We become obsessed with our image and it dictates our lives. My experience with anorexia left me depressed and lifeless. I thought that if I only I weighed less I would be happy, but the fact of the matter was I happened to be 20 pounds underweight. Despite this I continued to think I was fat and continuously destroy my body. This institution encourages the mindset of unhealthy living that will forever live with these kids. I may not be anorexic anymore, but I'm not immune to the dark thoughts either. My battle is day to day and it always will be. I would not wish this experience on anyone. I wish our society was not so captivated by looks or appearance because it ultimately can drive a person to their very limits.

I'm not a nutritionist or genius, but eating fat from meats is not fattening. I was a competitive powerlifter for several years and I was a Pennsylvania state champion when I was a high schooler in 2009. Eating less calories is the best way to lose weight. I guarantee that these students lose weight mostly because they are eating less snacks and food in general while they are at camp. Therefore their calorie count is lower than if they were at their house eating as many snacks and fast food meals as they can afford.

Marlin i believe saturated fats are not the cause of the US becoming obese because most cheap vegetables oils are low in saturated fat but the obesity rate still go up i believe that the cause is the increasing consumption of sugar
@AkiseAk
@AkiseAk 5 жыл бұрын
@@thegamer.__.086 Sugar is a major contributor. Mainly added sugar though. While saturated fat surely isn't the healthiest option, as long as the calorie intake is controlled, you could eat at McDonalds every day and still lose weight(but this would mean that you could only eat one meal a day)

@@AkiseAk I don't believe saturated fats are bad because there are countries without high consumption of saturated fat but low heart disease and obesity and saturated fats are the most stable when cooking now loosing weight and eating mc Donalds might work for some but it is not healthy way of loosing weight

You are absolutely correct you can eat anything you want especially with exorcize if you are not eating extra large portions with 2 snacks in between meals

Tobias Hänggi it’s none of the above, you gain weight from eating too much calories. I eat less calories, I lose weight. I eat more calories, I gain weight. Even with healthy foods, I gain weight if I eat a lot of it. I can eat Cinnabon and a pizza and still lose weight (yes, I did it)

Ok so this is an interesting concept that seems to be working for them, but for me there are massive flaws in this approach. One is that student are not preparing their own food and are having it prepared for them. They should rather be preparing their own lunch and dinner and breakfast at all or most times learning about BMR, TDE and despite its negative reputation counting calories so that THEY ARE EMPOWERED TO TAKE THIS IDEAS HOME. This means simplifying the food and also having the students somehow procure the ingredients themselves and measuring. Second their dietary approach is incredibly flawed. I like that they don't work about carbs because without carbs you would feel like you were dieing however the all you can eat salad bar and the low fat food is very flawed. We want to eat low fat because we should be eating plant-based-diets and typical we want them unprocessed meaning raw most of the time which makes it low fat. The main point should be eating a plant based diet that isn't highly processed(raw plant foods) They program is not empowering students with skills that they could take with them for the rest of their lives.

Eating healthy fat doesn't make you fat! Eating 0 grams of fat a day is not a healthy or sustainable way to loose weight or be healthy.

Well no shit, he is really unhealthy. The more you weigh, the easier it is to lose weight, for someone of average weight, losing 15 pounds in a week would be a little worrying, but he's obese so it's alright.

anything that size can literally fast for 30 days and be fine afterwards. Its not optimal for health, but by no means is losing 15-30-45 pounds per month unhealthy for anyone that size
