I like how chalky almost summed up who he is in a story. His father was a good honest man but he still got killed, Chalky is the way he is because it’s how he survives in a dark world like that one

^^^^^^ Chalky White went through the ringer, but he refused to step out of the ring. Instead he brought the ring with him and invited anybody who wronged him to step on up. Very underrated character.

At 3:07, you see Chalky looking at the tool he picked up. A tool he intended to torture this man with. But when you look into his eyes at that moment, all you see is a little boy who misses his daddy. Incredible range MKW had.

Chalky's story makes me smile in the beginning and sad when it ended. You could tell he looked up to his father. It speaks of stolen potential and dreams of a better life.

You can hear the pride in his voice when he speaks of his father's skill in carpentery and even the fact that rich white men invited him through the front door. And the pain in his voice when he tells of his father's pointless death. Powerful scene from a great actor.

And the sad thing is while some of this stuff is a work of fiction. Things like that happened. People say never forget the holocaust, but quick to say don't bring up the lynchings and the murders that happened here in the US.... If there is a hell, I hope all those white sheet monsters are roasting in it and smile gladly if a few chalky whites in real life got their pound of flesh.

Here's the thing. This story illustrates how the work of industrious Blax and allied Whites is undermined by racists. Mr.Purcelle respects Daddy White's work and treats him with dignity and respect. After the lynching do you think he'll contract out to another Blax man? If a different artisan is approached by a prosperous White will he work with or for them? And then allied Whites feel insulted, hurt or unfairly grouped and stop offering or interacting. THAT is American Racism. Most dont care but the ones who do damage the gains that are made.

smoothcollected Yes but the actual percentage of people who were all the way for the cause and did it for the greater good of humankind is infinitesimal. The people who fought in the civil war were drafted, and none of them were doing it for blacks, they were doing it to prevent secession. The civil war is given this false wrap of being a righteous war to make the North seem less racist than it really is. Most white allies back then were pieces of shit by today’s standards

@ronyeahright9536
@ronyeahright9536 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but then you should have thought further about the history of this country, and remembered that brother fought against brother, tearing the country in two, with death and misery for 4 years to rid ourselves of slavery. We didn't have to be overthrown by a foreign power; we did it ourselves. What other country would do that? PS....the United States didn't invent slavery; slavery has existed for thousands of years in many if not most countries in the world even before the USA was a country. PPS; today black people are more free, successful,, safe and prosperous than in any other country on the planet, and that includes countries on the African continent.

@@treroney4720 of course slavery was wrong, but thats hardly a new revelation. By the way, slavery still exists today on the African continent, and elsewhere.
