Boat hits barge at Ludham Bridge!

Boat biffs barge on a busy Bank Holiday Saturday! Plenty of river traffic passing under Ludham Bridge as boaters make the most of the lovely weather.

Curious watching so many 'broads boating' videos recently no-one seems to wear life jackets or PFDs. PDFs are legally mandatory over in Ireland on deck, on open vessels like ribs or lake boats.

They would get in the way of the sun tan….. the only people I see wearing them are on yachts/motor yachts who are probably quite experienced.

Just checked a Broads Authority’s pamphlet and it says life jackets should be worn on deck and getting on/off the boat.

@@timsytanker Not quite. Turn wheel to left to make stern swing to right and therefore bow steers to left except when stern cannot swing like against a quay wall or alongside another vessel. Its a combine harvester rather than a car from a steering perspective.

Clueless. But no harm done. The video title suggest a major collision rather than a stern kiss. Do newbies not figure out within their first 60 seconds of helming that a boat steers like a combine harvester, from the rear not like a car, and that the stern swings?

On the larger boats you tend to see over use of the bow thrusters as a Hail Mary to get out of trouble, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t…

@@timsytanker Yes you can tell immediately you hear bow thrusters being used while vessels are still making way. Single handing 50ft boats rarely need bow thruster unless it was very very windy. Ball and spring is the best get out of jail free card. .

@@oceanfroggie i watched one guy take between five and ten minutes to close the last 12 feet to a water point. The thrusters were screaming away all the time (those things are surprisingly loud!) he had to be helped in eventually. I’m not sure how much tuition big boat renters get but i bet it’s not a lot. On the flip side you also get renters who look really slick and work as a team.

@@timsytanker People forget about ropes and lines when there's a button in front of their noses, like folks attempting to steer in reverse using the wheel.

I suspect that few people who rent a Broad's cruiser have driven a combine harvester but if they did get behind the wheel of a good modern one it would be using ground radar to select gear and GPS to plan every part of it's route while they sat in air conditioned comfort.
