Blue Top came through the inlet like the pro she is. The two previous boat captains have a lot to learn about returning through an inlet on with a strong outgoing tide which combines with a brisk east wind.

it would be helpful to point out what the two other captains did wrong so the rest of us could learn from the “a lot to learn” about what they did wrong. Can you break it down for us?
@JD-hu9sg2 ай бұрын
lol you mean by just going straight? Wow that’s some talent lol
@maxdugan74492 ай бұрын
@@table4-5 I will explain what the two previous captains did wrong. First you must understand the dynamics of Haulover. The inlet is narrow, about 100 meters wide. The incoming and outgoing tides rip through there at almost 10 knots. The current slows down as ebb tide approaches. When ebb tide passes the current begins to speed up. Haulover becomes treacherous during an outgoing tide with a brisk easterly wind. Navigating the inlet with an outgoing tide requires a little finesse. When departing Haulover stay close to the north side because it has the fewest rollers/breakers. After clearing the mouth of the inlet steer to heading 65 degrees to get away from the turbulence and if you are traveling south travel on a heading 90 degrees for about a 1/4 klick then turn south. Your boat and guests do not take a beating as you will have avoided the turbulence. Returning during an outgoing tide has its challenges. The best approach to the inlet is from the north side. It is a little tamer than the center or even the south side. You must first trim your bow up and position yourself in the trough between 2 waves. Then you must work your throttle(s). Trying to power through can lead to a catastrophic consequence. The first captain had little regard for his boat and passenger who was taking a terrible beating. He had no business being out there in the first place especially with a bow rider whose bow was designed and built with reverse shear. It’s a good boat for rivers and lakes but not for the ocean. Captain 1 made the biggest mistake by not heeding the small craft warning. His second biggest mistake was attempting to navigate through the center of the inlet. He has very little situational awareness. If he did he would have observed how the north side of the inlet was a little tamer than the center. Captain 2 was having trouble with his starboard engine. His biggest mistake was not immediately turning around so he could return to his marina or boat ramp. Instead this meathead puts his boat and passengers in danger by attempting to restart the engine while his beam was to the sea. The boat could have been swamped by the large waves and rocked so severe that a passenger could have lost their balance causing a catastrophic head injury. I hope I answered your question. BTW: I come through Haulover once in a while. I have a blue 31 Bertram named Mr Lucky. Before I forget: On an incoming tide Haulover is as tame as a month old kitten.

As an ex-Coastie, I live with memories of pulling bodies out of the water after MORONS like those in this video went out in seas like this. These are examples of TOO MUCH MONEY and NOT ENOUGH BRAINS! The sea is unforgiving. I know. I was part of the rescue operation at the Andrea Doria disaster in 1956. I grew up on the water. My Dad owned a 24' cabin cruiser when I was born in 1937. When I was 10 years old (After WWII) he upgraded to a 52' Wheeler cabin cruiser. We loved the water. BUT we also respected it. Of course Dad, a Merchant Marine Engineer who went to sea when he was 12 years old, circumnavigated a dozen times on commercial vessels and he passed along HIS experiences to my younger Brother and Myself. Eventually My Brother and I both owned our own boats. Two things you never found on board them were ALCOHOL and HALF NAKED WOMEN.
