I watch all your episodes, but still can't understand why you bought this ship. The ship doesn't look like much on the inside, there is nothing authentic about this ship, nothing rustic from the past, just the cheapest plywood, amateurishly put together interior by those Amsterdam hippies! I understand that you also wanted a large sailing ship with character, but this ship you bought is just a steel hull that was also full of holes. The superstructure sucks, no rigging, the millions that this ship will cost to make it sailable are absurd. There are so many beautiful authentic sailing ships for sale in the Netherlands, France, Croatia, with work on, but not comparable to this steel monstrosity. I find it hard to understand that you haven't found anything better than this. If you didn't find what you were looking for, sooner or later you'll come across something you really like and is a viable renovation. In my opinion, you bought this ship way too quickly and thoughtlessly, simply because you couldn't find anything else at the time. I probably sound very negative, but I am sorry and painful to see you put so much work and money into this bottomless pit. As a person, I find you both very admirable and very nice, sweet people, which makes it extra difficult to watch this drama!

First of all I think you overestimate the costs. For us it was clear from the beginning that we won't reusing the interior. We've paid what a steel boat with a CVO and a usable engine is worth and not more. If you like the vessel or not is up to you, I really love the lines, her hull shape looks promising and for ME the past as a warship, trawler and sailing ship is interesting enough. Actually we both enjoy working on the ship and making progress. Little by little she's becoming our dream ship. The process is fun! the shipyard time was hard and maybe that's why you think about the episodes as drama.

Difficult getting medical assistance?? I brought my ex wife to the Netherlands, from Romania. Back then not even in the EU. No problem whatsoever to get her a medical insurance. That's 5 minutes of work.😂 Furthermore: the weather? It's the same in the whole northern part of Germany, so I don't know what you're talking about. Also: this was an exceptional summer, long time no see. And I'm 63 years old, so I have some experience. But I'm very glad it is like this. And you should be as well. Colder weather means you can work harder, without dying inside a steel hull. Plus what sailor doesn't like wind????🤣

The Netherlands don't accept the European Health Insurance. So it's no problem in the case of an emergency but it's difficult to get routine check ups and almost impossible to see a specialist like an eye doctor if you gotten a chip of paint in your eye. Just an example...

Danial: multi-tool part 1 & part 2 are without doubt the most efficient and reliable demolition tool system you will ever have. After demolition you will still find them very handy for fine adjustment during installation, especially multi-tool Part 2.

Working with the multi-tools is also relatively dust free. Especially compared to sawing. Since we can never be sure what types of glues and paints have been used in the 70s it's better for the environment and for us as well. And less dangerous...

We've planned to make a tour after each big step. Actually the last video was such a tour and it was filmed about 2 years after we've bought the boat. We will start to rebuilt the interior in the saloon area first because in this compartment we can fit a gally, a cabin, a seating area and maybe a bathroom extending into the engine room. Deck, bulkhead, sole overhead (deckhead for those in the UK). I believe you are committed to doing this right and also calling yourselves sailors. Therefore, please use the proper terms.

We try to use the right terminology when it comes to structural parts of the boat. Frames, stringers, knees, blukheads, deck.... Terminology is tricky when it comes to decorational stuff like peneling, interior walls and so on. For example I think the right word for the ceiling we have removed would be headliner. Is the paneling of the bulkhead also the bulkhead? But if you notice a wrong term please feel free to correct us we would like to know!

didn't you say at the next shipyard you're going to remove the concrete? that because it rusts the steel quicker? how much do you have to remove? how do you get ride of all the wood, stuff you've taken down? and what will you do with your motorhome? sell it? Shame you can't get an army full of volunteers to help you. just to form a line to pitch the junk off the boat. it will look fantastic when done i'm sure, good job.

Actually concrete protects the steel from rust. But right above it is a critical area because all the moisture runs down the hull and collects there. That's why some, if not to say most, frames are corroded right were the concrete starts. So in order to repair them we need to take out a little bit of the concrete to be able to repair the frames. The motorhome is our only car at the moment so until we are finished with the project and start traveling full time we have to keep the motorhome. Volunteers are always welcome so if you have time feel free to come 😉 All the best!

Hello Henk, that's the plan and since we have a keel cooling it's easy to do. Another benefit is that it also works the other way round and you can preheat the engine with the heating. Also we want to have the generator connected to the heating. Probably the center of the system will be a phase changer storage tank 🤩 Love to think about fat distant projects and dreams. More fun than thinking about how to get the concrete out 🤣

Interestingly it's not. Especially when we make it into the Baltic Sea. It's all about microclimate and the harbor we are in is not really protected against wind. In the last 10 days it was raining at least once every day and at least 15-20 knots of wind for most of the day. I know how it sounds but this weather here is really driving me crazy, never have experienced something similar before. And it's also because of the food in the supermarkets, the price level, how difficult it is to set up a company, the language, how difficult it is to arrange things.... But we are not the only ones complaining about that.

I'm afraid she will eventually grow to be 105ft long 😂 But it feels good to finally make some progress and we demolished a complete galley and removed about half of the ceiling. But the alternate universe inside the hull could be true we could fit the interior of UMA twice into the saloon... Next week we will finally have a volunteer helping us to make more progress and I think that's the point, Flying Coney is a sailing ship to be sailed by many people not just by the two of us.

@FlyingConey if you go sailing as the plan is,,,watch the gearbox, it can turn when the engine is off,,,by sailing, the propeller shaft will rotate, but the engine is off,,then the oil pressure often works do not pump from the gearbox and then do not lubricate,,,the oil pressure pump of the gearbox is driven by the input shaft that is attached to the engine,,and with sails it is off,,,,then a propeller shaft brake must be applied that Propeller shaft stop hold ,,,I don't know what type of reverse gear is behind it, so just ask or Google,,greetings Henk.

I try to give you an idea: The forcastle is planned to be a sleeping area for 12 people including two heads, in the former fish room there's a vip cabin planned as well as a galley, a seating area and a bathroom extending into the engine room. Main entrance and navigating area will still be the wheelhouse also with a day head and after the quarter deck had been lowered underneath it will be a captains cabin.

Hi guys, great to see you back on task again, Daniel, I see that they give bad hair cuts in that neck of the woods to, so pleased it’s not just restricted to Australia, like my Dad use to say “ it’s only a couple of weeks between a good and bad haircut”. Guys, can I ask, have you worked out whether it would be better to put SC on the dry or leave it in the water to do the refurbishment. The reason I ask is because I watch other channels and one in particular, Leo reckons it better to get as much done on land for various reasons, just a question. Tally Ho is about fife! times smaller than Flying Coney and Leo does have a complete workshop set up and more than 11 people working on the boat. We use slipways for the work that needs to be done below the waterline and yards do need their slipways. Usually you're only a few days or weeks out of the water. It's very difficult to find a place that could crane you out and store you on land, it would be extremely expensive. Another option would be a dry dock but again that's extremely expensive. We have the option to set up a workshop in the vessel itself or also on deck. When we tell you about the size of the boat in the video it's really not to brag or show off but the size limits some options and give us others.

Because of sail racing we spent long periods in foreign countries all over Europe. Getting to know different cultures and climates. Yes the climate especially at the Baltic Sea is very different. As for the the medical costs, I needed an injection in my knee last year. The quote we got in the Netherlands was 800€ so we drove to Germany there it was free. I got a little paint chip into my eye last year, it was impossible to sea an eye specialist in the Netherlands. And the list goes on and on. Also most doctors here don't except European health insurance.

Actually the next weeks we will work together with volunteers. We just arrived in the Netherlands on Monday after a drive of 1500km, so the week was quite challenging, with filming a complete episode and making some progress on Flying Coney. All the best!

We will redesign everything. Starting from scratch is the only way to go and was always the plan. When we bought the boat the original interior was already half way gone.

I'm surprised by your reasons to relocate your boat to Germany particularly healthcare and weather - In my limited experience they are about the same - can you explain more?

Sometimes we try to put too much information into one video and then we don't have enough time to explain the points enough. Healthcare is good in the Netherlands as long as you live here. We don't have an address here because it's not possible if you travel with a boat. Also they don't accept the European health insurance so if you want to see a doctor you have to pay in advance. It's not possible to see a specialist directly for an example if you gotten something in your eye and want to see an eye doctor. That's way easier in Germany. They accept the European health insurance and you can also make an address at a post box if you need one. We wanted to book an apartment in Urk to get off the boat once we realized that it will be an extended stay on the hard the cheapest we could find was 600 a week. That would have been 9000€ for the shipyard time. In Germany a cheap apartment is 600 a month! With the weather it's more about microclimate and Lelystad is particularly windy. The last 10 days it was mostly blowing with 20 knots or more and it's summer. Today I thought about turning on the heating because it was 15 degrees in the morning, again these are the hottest days in the year... Then it's raining half of the day everyday. Unfortunately it won't be different where the yard is but it's completely different at the Baltic Sea and after the shipyard time we want to move on. Also the Germans do have good bread and for us it's way easier to arrange things, partly because of the language but mostly because of the different mentality. The Netherlands are a great country to make holidays (but check the weather first) and for some to live here. But to live here as a foreigner not so much.

To the dump yard and it was about three trailers towed by a car full of rubbish. The most difficult thing was to get everything off the boat and carry each and every piece 100 meters along that jetty.

Every great restoration project starts with demolition . As you strip out the old interior it looks like layers of history . I only wish I lived closer I'd come by and help I spent years scheduling & restoring old buildings . Salvage the reusable materials the rest recycle or trash . great video well done ....the dirty work will pass and the new interior i'm sure will be amazing .

Great update 2x👍 Look on the bright side of stripping the interior the poop tank has gone already. ☺ The north sea can be a little windy and rough, even in high summer. My lounge looks right out across it and I can see the windows flecking when the wind comes from the sea.

In hindsight the poop tank was probably the single hardest task so far. Sharing the pole position with the de-rusting of the waterline with the Tercoo. We're really looking forward to the journey to Germany but for us it's important to you only see waves and ships in the far distance from your lounge and not a huge steel ship on the beach 😁

It was blowing 62 knots so almost 12Bft. The forecast for the day was 35 knots. Things like that happen sometimes and he tried hard to save it. The idea of the day was the guy who thought it's safer out on anchor and was going out and shortly later drifting downwind with the anchor down and the engine running.

The trim and doors of the wheelhouse are probably teak and the 7cm! thick deck planks might be as well. Maybe it's possible to re- use them as flooring in the interior. We have a reasonable thick hull, a valid CVO and a good working drive train. In other words a maneuverable casco. All the interior and the domestic equipment need to be build up from scratch. It's not reasonable to invest so much time and re- use rotten, molded, wet wood with insects living in it and probably also contaminated with asbestos to save some bucks. And yes it's that gross. Wood is expensive but not that expensive 😉

Replacing the Nav light power cables will give you the opportunity to replace it and label the line properly. Always better to have new cables. Perhaps you can get cables in different colors.

About 5 meters long and 6 meters wide. That's why we want to make it smaller. On port we do want to have a bathroom and aft of the engine we want to make a bulkhead and have the captains cabin aft of it.

Ja, aber nicht mit einem Tiefgang von 2,70 Metern. Da täuscht der Klappmast ein wenig aber wir haben ein Seeschiff und deshalb müssen wir über die Nordsee. Maximum auf der Staande-Mast-Route ist 1,90 Meter als fast ein Meter zu wenig.

How does demolition of dis-used plumbing and wiring get the ship ready for a Nordsee passage?

It's not relevant for the passage but for the next shipyard time. This way we can start directly with the frame repairs once we are there. Relevant for the passage are the maintenance of the engine and hydraulics and that we buy the necessary equipment like life rafts.

Astonishingly some flimsy pieces of plywood create some resistance when one will get them loose.

My guess is that the plywood isn't all that bad. Probably Okume and the cabin sole is made out of black boatbuilding plywood. But if you build something without ventilation you see the result after 50 years in our video.

@@FlyingConey Ventilation is quite not that easy with boats and interiors needs to be planned from the beginning the thermal fluctuations, hull, outside air/water so many condensation… one cubic meter of air at 25 °C can carry 23 ml of water and at 10 °C it‘s just 9ml guess its quite important to really totally stop the airflow within the structural layer to avoid condensation or having a 100% hydrophobic insulation material plus ventilation which might be quite tricky to avoid non or not so good ventilated air pockets.

The biggest issue was that back in 1977 someone decided to leave the cork insulation in place. Everything else are just minor problems. The problem with a riveted hull is that it's never 100% watertight similar to a wooden boat, so a moisture tight insulation might trap water and leads to corrosion. We will see next week how rotten the podestal of the gally actually is.

Dear Barbara and Daniël, It seems that professional demolition work is entirely written for Daniel 😀. It’s good to learn that the steel construction above the ship's hold ceiling is in good condition because that saves a lot of money. Willeke and I are very keen to learn how the rest will look like when all the demolition is over. Always lovely to read you comments! The saloon area is the last part of the hull with interior left. We hope that we can re-use the deck planks as interior flooring. But let's see, we don't know why it was layed over with metal... An interior tour where we explain what we want to do with each compartment is a good idea. @@FlyingConey I'm guessing the original wood deck became too hard and expensive to maintain. Once a steel plate is welded and kept painted it's pretty much waterproof, and as long as the wood is structurally sound, there's no need for thicker steel or additional beams to support it between spans.

I think your assumption is correct and with the 7cm! thick wooden deck there's no need for insulation. The problem is that next to deck there were drainages and they had the great idea to fill them up with concrete. First of all it's heavy and second it's leaking at the wooden deck - concrete seam. There are even plants growing 🫣 Also there's a layer of roofing tar under the steel and above the wooden deck. I'm hoping that it's not containing asbestos but not sure.
