First time I got to go offshe it was a dream come true. As an East Texas farm boy I had grown up watching "The American Sportsman". I think the host was Curt Gowdy but memory fades eith the decades. So on my first trip out we went 97 miles out of Galveston to the Tequila rigs. The Captian, who was a cowworker, had us rigged out with heavy tackle and 10 ft. long piano wire leaders rigged up where there was a tag line of wire 6 inches above the hook. He threaded a squid up over the hook and hooked the top on the leader tag. It had a large lead sinker on it. He told me let it out about 20 or 30 feet and hold onto the rod. I did and quickly reeled in a hefty blue runner. I reeled it in. I was dissapointed but to be polite to the man who took me offshore for the first time. I said, well it's not that big but zI bet it tastes great. He looked at me and smiled and replied, " yeah the Amberjack love them". This time my instructions were to let the bait hit the bottom and then reel in 10 revolutions. He also said, pay attention and don't turn loose of that rod, it's very expensive. I followed instruction but after a few minutesI was distracted by the rig, the noise, and just my first trip offshore. Within only 2 or thrè minutes the rod was almost jerked out of my hands. It was a 5' boat rod and it hit the gunwales and bent in a C shape. 30 minutes or so lated we landed my first Amberjack. When I stuck my hands in it's gills and stood up to take a pic, the tail was draggging the ground. I'm only 5'10" but it was a hughe fish and I was hooked for life. Thanks Bruce.

Born and raised in Hawaii, fishing surfing diving etc., I had a custom built Force 30 flybridge for me to commercial fish around the big island where I live. I had it built in the early to mid 80's. I make my living commercial fishing, so speed was not a concern, as I typically go on 4-5 day and night long fishing trips!! I had a single diesel engine with straight shaft set up and trolling at 8- 10 knots I burned 2&1/2 gallons per hour!! Diesel was 70 cents a gallon back then ! I had insulated fish hold capacity of 6000 lbs. I just still absolutely prefer an open cockpit, so when trolling for instance, I have all the open space for leadering big ahi, and marlin, and lots of ono and Mahi Mahi etc. It's extremely important to me to have my gunnel height at the transom so at a slight crouch I can lock my thighs and knees in and under it to brace myself taking double wraps pulling leader on big gorilla ahi (200-300 lb size) and the big blue marlin Hawaii is world famous for, though I do not target big marlin for commercial fishing and the Huge "donkeys" (over 500+ lb blue marlin are all females. But since I live in kona and base out of Honokohau harbor there, I do take friends out sport fishing for fun! I've literally caught 100's of 500+lb donkeys many up to 900-1000 lbs!! Lot's, fishing by myself alone!! I just don't like light takle fishing, and having one outboard leg, or 4 huge outboard motors off the transom because you can easily have a fish tangle the leader in the props and break it off, which is no fun after fighting a big ahi for 30-45 minutes, or worse a huge Blue Marlin for 6-12 hours or more which kona is famous for!! It must really suck, but inboard engine with straight shaft is a dream wiring the huge ahi and marlin with the whole cockpit opento move around in and with experience you can learn to keep fish from diving under the hull and cutting the leader losing a fish!! So these are awesome boats, and fast of course, but with 4 huge outboard engines and gasoline, it must be crazy expensive to run, also compared to inboard diesel and straight shaft set ups, there's standard maintenance and they just purrrrr, (though loud so noise proof ing and muffled exhaust is needed) I just watched guns with Volvo penta diesel io set ups doing so much regular leg maintenance and it was very expensive for parts compared to Detroit or cat, or Cummins that just go for ever if you take care of them ! Flybridge's are awesome for a captain to be up high and back down etc on bg marlin especially cause you have a great view above deck level!! Just how the classic sport fishing boats in kona are built for fighting huge fidh!!!! I rarely fish off kona commercial fishing!!! I prefer to fish the extremely rough trade winds exposed waters off the remote areas of the Big island, where few boats go plus it takes days to reach them and get back!!! But man the materials and high tech building of hulls and vessels now looks awesome and very strong!! I have to have a self bailing deck with rubber flap covered scuppers because the huge rolling white cap seas where I fish are just so rough most of the time.!!! Kona of course is big game pelagic fishing mecca where the high volcano slopes block the prevailing trade winds and create a huge Lee of flat calm water for miles!!! Where I fish, very few boats go but the fishing is incredible and when it really gets good its world class but extremely dangerous and rough!!!! Aloha from beautiful Hawaii D.L
