Made the mistake of not putting in the pin one morning leaving for practice day 1 of a 2 day championship. Hit the highway, Oklahoma roads are horrible, and a set of dips popped the hitch up, off the ball, slammed into the road, smashed the tailgate on its' way up, and slammed itself back onto the ball. Obviously lucky as hell with the landing, once in a lifetime chance, lol, and had to stop to re-latch it and place the pin in. Scariest moment of my fishing career, not on the water, and luckily only drove away with damage to my tailgate and nothing else. Minus the $1000 fix of the tailgate, I'd say we were pretty damn lucky!!! Many blow outs throughout the years, I think that's normal for most, but not all of it happening in one day. You are being looked after brother!!! Good to see you and Steph spending quality time together! Always good feelings to see a happy marriage, happy dog, and happy life! Love the vids, been here since 20k subs. Happy and good health to y'alls future and tight lines brother!!! If you ever make it to Tulsa, Ok, hope to see ya on the water one day bud!

If you crisscross ur safety chains to make a cradle the tongue would never touch the ground. Too many people do not understand how to properly use safety chains.
@minameismud83
@minameismud83 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, if they were chains, but he's got cables that coil. The cables are long enough at full extension that it won't matter how crossed they are, the tongue would still drag ground.

Hey NateSchnier...........USN-Ret is exactly RIGHT. YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO CROSS THE SAFETY CHAINS. Furthermore, you're suppose to make sure you're using the correct LENGTH of chains to begin with. Those cables, especially with heavier boats, are next to worthless. They simply do not behave the way a pair of PROPER LENGTH chains criss-crossed do. Far too many people think safety chains are simply to keep the trailer attached should it come off the ball. That's only part of the idea of chains. Every truck-to-trailer needs to have the chains properly sized to just the right length. And then when the chains are properly criss-crossed, they will act as A CRADLE and that trailer never would've even touched the ground. With those damned cables ( or chains that are too long & not criss-crossed ) if the trailer comes off AND HITS A POT-HOLE or some other un-level surface in the road, will cause a "pole-vaulting" action of the trailer tongue......and THAT WOULD BE CATASTROPHIC.

I was taking 2 of my buddies to a bass lake shortly after I bought a new 16' jon boat. Every stop I could hear the boat shift on the hitch, but due to not knowing any better, just kept driving. We got on the highway at 65mph and hit some railroad tracks that bounced us good enough for the whole trailer to come off the hitch...still going 65mph. I had to stop the sparking and grinding trailer with the back of the truck, angling toward the shoulder. It put a dent in the bumper and busted the trailer Jack, but now I get more of a workout hitching up the boat. We all caught decent smallmouth, so it turned out to be a good day.

Nice guns OSG! I kid you not, two weeks ago the dealer put an electric trolling motor on my boat and two miles down the road, down it comes. They didn't make sure it was locked and had the depth collar loose and near the head unit. Ground and bent the skeg. Needless to say, both of those items are now on my tow checklist.

I worked as a yard jokey moving 53 foot trailers once. I drove around a yard dog with a hydraulic 5th wheel. My 3rd day on the job the 5th wheel gave loose and dropped a trailer that was full of frozen food. It crushed the legs and they have a crane come out to life it up. So, don't feel too bad.

That has never happened to me, but I just had the springs on my trailer snap on Memorial Day while going down the highway at 55mph. Tore the axle out from under the trailer on the side that snapped. Tire (still connected to axle) was literally behind the boat while other side was still in place. Boat bounced like a basketball.

I had a similar incident with my hunting camper. A couple of buddies and I "pitched in" to hook up the camper. Problem is, there were too many cooks in the kitchen - no one put the pin in the hitch ball mount. When I pulled out of the driveway (on a significant hill, no less), the ball mount came out. Luckily, the safety chains kept the camper from rolling backwards down the hill into my neighbor's house. I put a chock in place, got out the floor jack, and got 'er re-hitched.

Oh crap, we got a badass! Let's use some powers of deduction, shall we? He stated he was going fishing with his grandpa, so it would not be unfair to assume (yes, I do realize this should not be done often) that he was young when this happened... maybe early teens or younger. So, it would be fair to say that at such a young age, the safety aspect of trailers and boats is likely above his head and should have fallen on his grandfather. So what have we learned today? That internet trolls should probably think a little before they start calling people a dumbass. Sadly, the ass hats of the internet will never learn.
@jackmoore2733
@jackmoore2733 7 жыл бұрын
HunterSmith69 yeah, not only is the grandchild a dumbass; his grandfather is an even bigger dumbass. the grandfather should be intelligent enough to properly put the ball and hitch on the truck and attach the trailer to the ball... honestly not that complicated, but I guess some people still have a hard time with it.

I don't run anything but bias ply on my trailers. Trailer radials are made so horrible and every tire shop wants to sell them because they are cheap. My honest opinion after running a fleet of farm trailers, a camper, and 3 boats is always run the most ply bias trailer tire you can find and always run them on max pressure (unlike radials). Been running trailer for years like this and ended all my tire problems. Also if you let your trailer sit for a decent amount of time the radial flat spots and seperates causing blow outs. Bias will flat spot and then eventually roll out and won't seperate and blow out. You can let the trailer sit for months at a time and not worry about the tires with bias ply tires.

Justin in the future you need to exit the highway to change the tire. Your trailer is equipped with tandem axles and the tire was beyond repair so protect you AND your wife and pet from the dangerous environment present on our roadways. I wish they would make it a law that the Highway Patrol have to exit to issue citations. Look how often you see videos of them being struck by traffic! Never let your gaurd down... No, never had a boat jump off of my ball hitch but I did have a pole trailer loaded down with about 20 joints of 2 7/8 tubing do it at work once while driving down an oil field lease road. We were used to unstrapping the boat and just backing down the ramp and launching in one nice swoop. My buddy gets a new boat and we go out to launch for the first time. We unstrap the boat... he jumps in it... I jump in the truck to start backing it up and launch. Here is where the fun starts. The old trailer had carpet skids. The new trailer had nylon skids. Uhhh-ohhhh! We should have left the boat strapped in. The second the trailer tilted down the ramp the boat started sliding off. There was nothing I could do but let off the brake and try to make it to the water. When the boat got past its balancing point it tilted straight up in the air. All I could see was a vertical boat at the back of the trailer. It clunked down into the water and popped back up 1/4 full of water. My buddy said he was hanging on for dear life to the center console with his feet dangling in the air! We had an audience and they all applauded.

On the way to return the trailer I went over a hump in the road. next thing I saw was the trailer bucking forward, hanging from the saftey chains. Looked and felt like it was slamming into the back of the truck. I knew I was going to find the tongue of the trailer stuck through the tailgate. I get out to check out the damage and to my relief, the saftey chains were just short enough that the trailer never touched the truck. come to find out, that this wasnt the first time it had happened with that trailer. Thanks for the heart attack UHaul!

We were heading down the highway and our hitch broke, it plowed into the ground and broke the concrete, luckily we had chains connecting it to our truck, there was a line of broken concrete for about 30 feet

@lakeforkguy When I was on a detachment to Panama in Small Craft Co. We were part of a convoy of Humvee's pulling our 18' Boston Whalers, and all of a sudden we say a trailer tire pass us on the shoulder and go up the side of a hill. Turned out the trailer that was 2 Humvees back had lost it's wheel.

I got up before daylight and hooked the boat up, loaded all the gear, and had to drop my daughter at school on my way to fish. Something didnt feel right pulling the boat, stopped to check the boat at my daughters school and the trailer ball had not seated in the hitch. It was sitting on top of the ball. How it didnt come off going down the road I have no idea.

I pulled my boat out of the water, halfway up the steep ramp I hear a crack and the truck grinds to a halt. I get out and my skeg snapped off and the lower unit is grinding on the concrete. Trim up your motors people!

LFG....I might suggest using your jack instead of your back should the trailer ever drop again.

I was going on a trip n had the traps on the back of the boat popped lose. Had the aluminum boat slide off the trailer and into some ice plant. Luckily it was early in the morning n had all the fishing stuff plus motor in the back of the truck....all ways triple check all straps stay safe.
