Boat transom repair. Making a new metal transom cap for my boat to reinforce it

That transom is pretty well shot, the cap is nearly useless. The cracks around the inside corners are strong indicators of flex.

Yes. If you can get the moisture of of the wood, which takes a long time with heat lamps and fans, and then seal it up, it will stiffen up and stop rotting. If not it will continue to rot. Unless you get that water out it's no good. Been there and done that. Did alot of what you had only to have to do a complete teardown 2 years later.

After further examination, I feel it is way too far gone for a dry and reseal.

I appreciate your insight! I reluctantly agree that I'm not comfortable enough to thoroughly trust it. The existing bolts, brackets, and mounting points seem to have it held firm right now. I'm not using it much and checking it thoroughly every week before I decide which big step I take next.

6:37 look at that stress crack!!. That's a tell tail your transom is flexing way too much. That is a common place for a crack to form as a result of a rotted transom. Your plywood is supporting very little load and the majority of the engine is being supported by the fiberglass skin. I urge you and anyone not to take a vessel like this out on the water. Way too much can happen. I know a few people who's transoms gave way and lost everything. 500 to 1000 dollars is alot cheaper then a new rig and you know you have a boat that is like new and price of mind. The floor had been replaced by the previous owner... a rule that is often said is is the floor or rotted, the transon and stringers were gone long before. If that guy did the floor right he would of replaced the stringers. But I find that unlucky. Ur skin should not be that squishy. It should be solid

Thank you so much for the feedback! I was curious about that crack at 6:37. It makes sense that it’s related. I am taking another good look at it after using it for the last few weeks. I’m not getting any flex, but will be deciding the next steps pretty soon (part it out, fix it, or sell it)

@@WayneTheBoatGuy I have a similar crack.....i bought a boat not knowing what i was doing. I'm thinking of tearing the wood out of the transom and pouring liquid transom to replace the wood.
