Just a friendly FYI from a retired Marine electrician. Whenever you’re gonna pull hoses or wires give them a good spray of marine silicone CRC and they’ll slip right past everything that they would normally get caught up on due to surface friction. We used to complain about lobster pots in our area (Long Island Sound in the northeast) but when we went to Maine, we understood what “a lot” really meant!!! Where I’ve normally seen one there might be 20-30 or more!!!!! It is crazy!!!

Here's a hint that has saved me some grief while fishing hoses through blind areas: one of those television inspection devices. Essentially a 4-6' flex cable with a small TV camera on one end and a view monitor on the other. When the hose hangs up, the monitor enables you to see where the hangup is, and usually a bit of body English or an expandable pole will guide the hose around the obstruction. Less hard pulling; less vocabulary expansion. Also works in any number of other situations where getting a physical eye can't be done.

Tying up in the channel at La Conner can be exciting with a tide change!!! I once stepped onto the dock at La Conner turned around to grab my spring line and the boat was headed south to Seattle!!! You should have seen this old guy JUMP!

Up here in BC waters the debris is unlike anything we've seen for many years; I think logging practises significantly reduced the debris over recent years. However, we had a massive slide in Bute Inlet back in November, plus a burst log boom in Toba Inlet which I think has been a major contributor to the wood in the water. Love your videos!

Mr Knight at Yacht Tech discussed the issue of replacing the black water hoses. He says the problem is the holes they pas through are very small. It is easy to install hose when there is nothing installed in the boat. Know you will get the job done. He also mentions that not all the hoses are of the same quality. Some allow smells to to permeate.

That's why I'm a landlubber. I was raised boating on the Chesapeake. There is so much S.H.I.T. that can go wrong: from bobbing vertical logs that can punch a hole in the hull to your engine crapping out where without a sail you're screwed. Presumption is man's greatest frailty.

Really enjoyed this video.We moved our Tolly 44 from Cap Sante Marina to our slip on Lake Union just before you arrived in Anacortes. We were able to go via Admiralty Inlet, but think your viewers would have enjoyed learning about the Range at the South end of Swinnomish. FYI, the trail up to Eagle Rock on Cypress is closed from Spring until mid-July for baby eagles to nest.

One February, I was on the shore of Lake Tahoe, my home, and was sun bathing with a wall of snow behind me. I got really hot after a while and decided to jump in. A lot of people try this. Jumping in Tahoe in the winter. Polar Bear clubs and all. I dove in and immediately skipped off the tops of the little waves getting back to shore. It hit so hard I almost gasped under water. It is something I will never, ever, repeat. Once done, good enough. Making an annual thing of it is not good. But 46 degrees is warmer than Tahoe's waters at that time and place. I would check temps before jumping in again in winter. But that's just me.

I live in San clemente Ca and Dana point yacht marina is closeby. One of the problems they are having and i have seen it more than once is Paddle boarders cutting in front of large boats and really just all over the place without even looking behind them. As you know Nordhavn is based here and their boats are constantly being cut in front off. I have nothing against people that want to paddle board but in the lanes where boats come in and out and cannot stop on a dime i see some bad accidents going to happen and their needs to be some new laws or regulations for them. If you study nuclear physics, you will find that when it is colder, the electrons move slower, which causes the atoms to move less, which causes the molecules to move less so that the molecules will be closer together so the water will be harder or more dense. It doesn't just seem that way. It really is. :-) Warmer water is less dense than colder water so hitting it won't be as hard of an impact.

In film school, the first thing they teach is: "show; don't tell." I find myself fast-forwarding through all the commentary, so I can view the shots of the environment, of nature, of the coast. Elizabeth, your wide-angle shots from the drone are amazing. It's what keeps me coming back. Getting info about the trawler, it's maintenance and what it is like to live aboard it, is interesting, but, shouldn't comprise more than 25-30% of each episode, which I think are too long at 20mins. +70% of the show should be beautiful and prolific shots of nature and environment of the places you are visiting. The viewer wants to live vicariously through you, so, show us. Show us the cafes, the storybook forests, the coastline, the wildlife, the quaint hotels, the state parks, the beaches, etc. of those beautiful places in the Pacific Northwest. So, don't underestimate the power of the natural beauty which surrounds. Focus on your technical skills of getting the most beautiful shots, going the extra mile to get the twilight and sunrise shots, framing the mountains in the scene, etc. You are the director. The breathtakingly beautiful environment is the talent. Good luck, Elizabeth. I think you are shawn are great people too! I just absolutely love the Pacific NW. It's without a doubt the most beautiful place on the planet. :-)

Respectfully I disagree Charles. As a boater it's really great to see not only shots of the natural beauty of the PNW but also the technical/mechanical issues that we as boaters have to deal with and worry about, all while being entertained. My husband and I look forward to spending time each week following Shawn and Elizabeth's adventures aboard MV Freedom. I wouldn't change a thing other than maybe a bit more screen time for Mr. Sully (because we really can't get enough of that little guy) and if anything we'd love slightly longer videos. 30 minutes would not be out of the question but I'm sure would take longer to produce. I think the current videos are a nice mix and keep their followers entertained and interested. Keep up the great work guys!!

I boated in the PNW for 20 years and never had a problem. Common sense keeps you from a lot of problems. SInce my mortgage was in Lake Union I had the best of both worlds. The best gunkholing ever. I miss it.

Walking down the dock with that rain and cold doesn't look like fun LOL but Mr. Sully needed to get out. Changing out the plumbing hoses did look like a tough job. Well you could always relocate to here in Florida, cool now at 61 but should be about 77 today. We would love to see MV Freedom in the sunshine state, Stay warm and take care.

Decades ago, I lived in both Orlando and Miami (now in Seattle). What I remember is going from air conditioning to air conditioning while swatting mosquitoes. Then there is hurricane season and the afternoon thunderstorms with hail. Now, I leave the screen door open about 8 months of the year and in 37 years, I have only seen one thunderstorm that reminded me of the midwest and nothing like Orlando every afternoon at 4 p.m.:)) I never carry an umbrella and I can walk to about a dozen cannabis stores. When I left Florida in the very early 80's, I never returned.

Some of the crab trap problems here around Sooke B.C. are due to crabbers not putting weights in the trap and the tide shifts them around.The comercial traps are usually well placed ( out of the ilne of travel)

I'm with Shawn, every ten years is enough .. for Logs and Containers in the water, look into a "FarSounder Forward-Looking 3D Sonar - Argos 350" with a camera attachment too. Expensive but an awesome piece of gear, .. pilot ahead even at night, scope out an anchorage, look for wrecks and rocks below the surface .. indispensable piece of equipment. R/ Glenn L.

It warms my heart to watch you tackle the waste hoses. I did it all last year.(by myself) By the time you get to the third hose, you just don't give a sh*t about staying clean. Just want to git er done. Rebuilding the vacuflush pump was no picnic either. It sure makes the boat smell better when it's done, though, huh?

On our last trip in October we went through Deception Pass and up the Swinomish channel back to Anacortes where the boat is kept on the hard near Cap Sante (we are in San Diego). Great video and it brought back memories of that trip and also made me wish I'd stored the boat indoors after seeing the 40 knot winds you guys had. Hoping I still have a canvas enclosure left after the constant wind storms that have gone on this winter. Hoping for some better weather soon!

You're wise not to cruise at night in the PNW - too much drift in the water. I did take a cruise once on a friend's 140' steel-hulled expedition boat that was owner operated. We cruised day and night. I was at the helm in Queen Charlotte Strait when I came up on a big patch of logs. He said just go right through it. They were 18" in diameter! Must of been habit, but I went around them.

Blackwater hose replacement!! Worst job! Our boat had a bladder instead of a holding tank. Fortunately it was dry and not smelly. Installed a new holding tank, new vent, and then on to the hoses. Not to difficult except getting it to the toilet. Tight turn and blind feed. The other hard part is the lack of give when doing fittings. Sooo stiff. Its been 17 years with no problems so it was all worth it.

We have been thinking about taking the Swinomish Channel when it's rough water. I didn't realize there were so many crab pots and debris in the water. Will definitely take it easy if we decide to go through the channel - 10 knots is probably a good recommendation! Thank you!

The debris is seldom this bad. This was after a big wind storm and a very high tide. You will seldom see this during normal cruising season. The speed requirement in the channel proper (once you go under the bridge) is no wake. This generally means in the 5-6 knot range. There are very few boats that don't make a big wake at 10 knots.

Thought about getting a Nordhavn and was tempted to purchase one but in the end I went with sail due to my prior yachts were all sailing yachts. As with any boat, there is always something to do and working on the waste hoses is right at the top of the list of not fun jobs and if at all possible done by someone else. Nice video and there is no need to be in a hurry to get anywhere. Take it slow and enjoy.

Bering 77 Explorer would be my choice. Nordhavn makes good boats, but the interior looks stuck in the 1980s. And I love how overengineered the Berings as well as redundancy everywhere.

This reminded me of my first time through the Swinomish Channel. Yes, opposing traffic is always close aboard. The crab pots in the channel are there because at low tide there is dry land outside the channel. I went down from Anacortes to LaConner one night at 2 AM in a driving rain storm, on radar because the back scatter from flood lights was blinding and the plotter didn't refresh fast enough to keep me in the center of the channel. Have fun boating. Check out Semiahmoo Marina up north. Best marina in the state.

Make sure you tie up at Semiahmoo Marina, not Blaine. Easy in easy out, fuel and pump out on the guest dock and a five star resort next door with fancy restaurants, a great bar, spa and health club.

@@mvfreedom the Bay Area/San Francisco it’s a nice place but the waters as you getting closer to the Golden Gate Bridge are ruff. We move from San Jose in 95 to Westwood area for UCLA school and we been living down here 60 miles east of LA area. Washington/Oregon coast has many beautiful areas to see and explore.

I'll tell ya also! I hate it when I am halibut or salmon fishing and some "Adam Henry" blesses me with their wake on the wide open ocean. I will often give those skippers the #1 sign for their lack of boating manners.

in miami there are no crab pods or logs, you see that in the keys. but here the weather is far more dynamic. in the summer. your sea skills would be tested on a trip to the bahamas dr pr or jamaica,. people dont really do the intercoastal voyage here to much. cuase of all the coastal laws.but def your weather skills would need to be very high cuase a storm forms here in litterally 3 to 5 seconds, almost like the sceene from ghost busters.

Powerball winner? I’d buy the AllSeas 92’ steel hulled all weather trawler to smash through those annoying deadheads in the water.......I know its set up for crew but the builder designed it to be owner/operator.

Always look forward to your vids. One obs - when wrapping PTFE tape, you’re going in the right direction around the pipe, but you should have the reel the other way, and keep the tape tight. Hard to explain, maybe there is a super-short KZbin or pic to show. Keep up the good work!
