For those who noticed, Col. Dole [Bob Dole is an Honorary Colonel of the 10th Mountain Div.] saluted with his left hand. Military courtesy requires that the salute be delivered by the right hand, *save for this exception* ... when the soldier has lost the use of their right hand, they are permitted to salute with the left. Then-Capt. Dole was wounded commanding a company of the 10th Mtn in Italy, losing the use of his right hand and arm. This gesture, along with the presence of Pres. Bush's service dog, Sully, will remain with me the rest of my life.

I interned for Senator Bob Dole when I was in college in the summer of 1993 (even though I'm a liberal). Dole took one Armenian intern every summer out of loyalty to the Armenian doctor who saved Dole's arm, which he injured in WWII, and convinced Dole away from suicidal thoughts. The internship was great. I did everything from walking his dog, Leader (a very appropriate name as the dog walked you, you didn't walk the dog), to getting Dole to agree to cosponsor John Glenn's landmine moratorium bill. Dole was extremely kind and one of the better Republicans this country has ever had. Rest in peace and thank you for your service.

I graduated High school 35 years ago. My one great regret in life as a man is that I did not have the opportunity to serve my country like President Bush in a noble struggle like WWII, Korea, Vietnam, or today’s fractured conflicts. It is a hole in me. I came of age in a transitional time where the great evils of Fascism and communism were largely already defeated. I am thankful for the relative peace of my youth, but still, I yearn to do something noble for my country. God bless men like George H.W. Bush.
@ruthr47123 жыл бұрын
As someone who has military in the family going back to the Revolutionary war, you don’t need to go to war to be noble. If you see someone disabled and they appear to be struggling, ask if they need help. If you see an old person and they appear to need help, ask. If you see someone being bullied, put a stop to it. I think that will make you feel whole and even more noble than not going to war.
