Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
I ain't lookin' to compete with you
Beat or cheat or mistreat you
Simplify you, classify you
Deny, defy or crucify you
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you
[Verse 2]
No, and I ain't lookin' to fight with you
Frighten you or uptighten you
Drag you down or drain you down
Chain you down or bring you down
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you
[Verse 3]
I ain't lookin' to block you up
Shock or knock or lock you up
Analyze you, categorize you
Finalize you or advertise you
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you
[Verse 4]
I don’t wanta' straight-face you
Race or chase you, track or trace you
Or disgrace you or displace you
Or define you or confine you
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you
[Verse 5]
I don’t wanta' meet your kin
Make you spin or do you in
Or select you or dissect you
Or inspect you or reject you
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you
[Verse 6]
I don’t wanta' fake you out
Take or shake or forsake you out
I ain't lookin' for you to feel like me
See like me or be like me
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you

I wish I had a profound comment to make: I knew the late great Tom Petty who thought Dylan was better than Shakespeare but honestly, I couldn't find the words to get an amazing guy into my bed and this was the only way to make him feel safe from a woman who says what she wants and can take rejection. We have known each other for 16 years and in that context this song is hilarious.

This track captures the brilliantly mischievous relationship Bob Dylan has with words: his playful irony; his generous, throwaway mentality; his gently barbed warnings to his listeners and lovers, or anyone who takes themselves too seriously. The other side of the bombastic, inspiring political preacher man.

Dear H.D.O.T. I’m sorry to hear about your parents’ struggles. I know that it’s rare indeed these days to find a whole, loving family. Your family of origin is the bow, you are the arrow and Life is the path of flight through which you soar… All the Best! Kahlil Gibran on children: And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said "Speak to us of children" Your children are not your children They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself They come through you but not from you And though they are with you yet they belong not to you You may give them your love but not your thoughts For they have their own thoughts You may house their bodies but not their souls For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow Which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams You may strive to be like them But seek not to make them like you For life goes not backward, nor tarries with yesterday You are the bows from which your children As living arrows are sent forth The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite And he bends you with his might That his arrows may go swift and far Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness For even as he loves the arrow that flies So he loves also the bow that is stable

Dammit.. All _I_ wanted to do was go see Bob Dylan in Little Rock two days ago lol.. My wife thought it was weird that I wanted to go alone - as I don't keep friends and she was working - and my little brother never answered the text if he wanted to go. So we hesitated, then our bank account got wiped out by bills and we were broke... I saw him in Little Rock back in 2008 but I was just starting to really like his music at that time and didn't know a lot. I don't believe in all of this celebrity elevation stuff but Bob Dylan really is special - a legend and my favorite musician/artist by lightyears - and we don't live forever and I'd just like to see him one more time while he's still kicking. My grandpa died last September at 84 and I thought he was going to live forever - not literally but with his health and spry-ness I thought he'd easily make it over 100 - but relying on that false belief is why I didn't see him _near_ as much as I wanted to in the last couple of years. I know Bob Dylan will play music until he physically can't - so I'm really hoping he comes back to Little Rock in the next few years. I'm a total hermit and I never go anywhere (besides the log woods to work) - but I was more than willing to drive the 100+ miles to Little Rock lol.. Again, I don't like that celebrity worship crap - and that's not what's going on here - it's just, his music really speaks to me for whatever reason (maybe since we're both Geminis - I guess everyone likes Bob Dylan - maybe one of the few things we can all agree on these days) and I want to see him while I can. He's one of those legendary artists where a future younger generation will be in awe that you saw him live. It says something for a musician to win a Nobel Prize.

I haven't listened to this for a long long time. I also like the Byrds and Cher versions. But get the very last bit here: in his book and the other versions it says "See like me or be like me". But here he is very clearly singing "... or pee like me" - and that's the reason for his little laugh at the end. Who missed that?

Amazing the nearly infinite ways a man can get accused of mistreating a woman while women can (mis)behave & act however they want, including snuffing your unborn child or isolating & alienating you from your beloved born child at whim. A man is forced into a position of endless defensiveness & presumed lesser moral worth encapsulated by the spirit of this song.
