This is flat out terrific. I've always found this to be difficult because many play it with no structure, just as you say you used to. And to dig in to a song you've played a long time shows someone always thinking about upping his game. I wish patreon allowed single contributions. That makes sense in many situations but not all. Hold the phone - I see there's a paypal option too. Others, I'm sure you're like me and value the work like this lesson, but never getting around to sharing some of the coin in our pocket. I'm fixing that by committing to putting my money where my mouth is. Let's all do that.

I’ve been learning the Billy Strings rendition and he does it in F (capo 5th fret) and I thought that was the original key but I’m glad I checked out your version because you’re in C. Plus I just learned so many cool fills and flourishes from this…thanks man. I’m a fairly solid player but I wish I had your voice man. So good. My vocals sound like those goats that faint when they get startled.

He might of had his guitar in Eb tuning which would bring it to C on the 5th

Very happy to hear that!

@@MTGuitar can you guys explain what you mean by being in "C" on the 4th fret capo? I understand music theory, but very little about guitar. Being on the 4th fret would add 2 steps to every chord correct? Meaning the F chord we play is actually an A chord, which is not in C. So i'm confused why its being called C. Thanks!

Billy Strings version is actually Doc Watsons. Doc created that one. Billy does a great job playing it. 👍🏻

According to my ears, you shouldnt change any of these strings or rhythms, lol. Its so perfect and I am locked in full send. Thanks for this one, its the best out here that ive found.

First, let me say your instruction is so pleasing to the ear. So many instructors can be a challenge to listen to for a variety of reasons. Thanks! at 7:35, you're showing us the second fingerpicking bar, and you say "as you hammer on you hit the 4th string". I believe you meant to say, "you hit the 6th string (low G)" as that is what you actually do a few seconds later, and as the tab shows. Please confirm. Thanks :)

Ahh yes you're absolutely correct! Good catch. And, I appreciate the kind words, thanks.

@@MTGuitar My pleasure. You play a lovely rendition of the song, and your picking solo is splendid!

I agree you about arrangement liberties, so many opportunities to add a unique twist with all that fingerpicking. Josh Turner's video on this song has served me very well, but you've highlighted some details that I've been missing! Many thanks!

This is my favourite song. My husbands a guitar player and I was upset he wouldn’t learn it for me. He said Bob Dylan only did the chords. 😭

Bruce Langhorne played the finger picking melody. Not Dylan. Dylan just strums.
