Lyrics:
The air is getting hotter
There’s a rumbling in the skies
I’ve been wading through the high muddy water
With the heat rising in my eyes
Every day your memory grows dimmer
It doesn’t haunt me like it did before
I’ve been walking through the middle of nowhere
Trying to get to heaven before they close the door
When I was in Missouri
They would not let me be
I had to leave there in a hurry
I only saw what they let me see
You broke a heart that loved you
Now you can seal up the book and not write anymore
I’ve been walking that lonesome valley
Trying to get to heaven before they close the door

Very true. We never stop thinking how badly off we are and never realizing how good we have it. And to be careful not to destroy it.

@@paulhammer1363 It's certainly been lifted from somewhere, but with Dylan, It's never about a single line, it's the concoction of beauty unfolding before you. The world-weary sneer, the Ornette Coleman approach to harmonica and imagery that rivals Rimbaud. But then again, he says so much with so little. "I was riding in a buggy with Miss Mary Jane, Miss Mary Jane got a house in Baltimore." I've never taken a ride in a buggy, I sure as hell have never been near Baltimore yet I feel I know exactly what he means.

I did not listen to Dylan when I was young. I did not even like him. It was something with his sharp voice I think and also that a lot of people hade the opinion that one SHOULD like Dylan, otherwise one lacked a good taste for music. But 2005 (I think it was) I was forced to listen to this album over and over and over again in a workingplace in Sweden where the boss worshiped Dylan and after that summer I was enchanted by Dylan and this album. This song is one of my favorites. Sentimental. Sad. Human. I can see before me the old american landscape he travels through in this song both from the outside and inside. At least imagine it.

@@willempie54 I take it to mean that he has been around and enjoyed his share of worldly pleasures. In particular, I would say he is talking mostly about women, but it is open to a broader interpretation. I like the fact that the line is evocative without being too specific, which would also account for why it might not translate to another language in an obvious way.
