I hadn't listened to Bob Dylan for 40 years. I listened to this & was knocked out. It was Blake, Keats & the Psalms speaking to Eternity. God was swimming in the lyrics. Bob was dancing with Jesus. It's so beautiful.

I'm 76 y.o. and have been an admirer of Bob Dylan since 1961. I am not a Christian. So, in the 1980s, when he turned in that direction, I stopped listening to him. I have just recently started exploring this period of his career and have discovered that I have missed some of his finest song-writing work. This tune, undoubtedly, is one of the most beautiful and powerful songs in his songbook. Thank you for posting it.

I have had almost exactly the same experience. He has done amazing work that traces his life. He is now in his '80s and thankfully still shares his sensibilities and wisdom with the world. I am not Christian either, but some of his spiritual songs are great--especially this one. He has moved away from Christianity, but many of his songs (including his social justice songs) reflect a quality of spirituality at its finest.

IMO the best he's ever done, and, the best version he's ever recorded. And my "listening history" goes back to the "Visions of Johanna" - "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" era, when I was somewhat involved in a leftist radio station (Pacifica -- WBAI), where a friend had the all-night music show (Bob Fass), who was pretty much Dylan's first friend when he arrived in the West Village from Minnesota. N.B.: The first time I drove to Minneapolis, where I was to be "somewhat involved" with a church in Eden Prairie (having done a 180 from my 1960s East Village hippie era), I drove up the West bank of the Mississippi River -- it was a _long_ drive that night, which gave me plenty of time to bounce "No way!" -- and "Seriously?" -- and "Are you _kidding_ me?" -- and "Yikes, I _do_ really think so!" back and forth in my head. The road that leads up to Minneapolis (and down _from_ Minneapolis) is called Highway 61. Ah, memories... PS: I recently read something from an interview with him that confirmed that it actually _was_ that road, and _not_ "The Crossroads" of Robert Johnson fame.

In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need when the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed there's a dyin' voice within me reaching out somewhere toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break in the fury of the moment I can see the Master's hand in every leaf that trembles and in every grain of sand Ooh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer the sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way to ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame and every time I pass that way I always hear my name then onward in my journey I come to understand that every hair is numbered like every grain of sand I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night in the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light in the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space in the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea sometimes I turn there's someone there other times it's only me I am hanging in the balance of a perfect finished plan like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand

@@JuanYNhilka when he's gone people will truly understand his impact. He's already an icon but like many, age and hanging on past his best (don't get me wrong - he still writes some cracking tunes) has taken focus away from the giant he was in his peak decades. I dread the days when people like him pass away but also know there will be a global outpouring of love and memory. Dylan and McCartney will both hit me in the heart espeically and I'm only 34. I can barely imagine the decade long impact them and their like have had on people listening to their music since the 60's. I have a theory that since celebrity culture really only kicked off in the 50's/60's that those hosts of stars are approaching their 80's and 90's and whoever hasn't died younger will be lining up. Remember the year Prince and Bowie died? I can predict that but worse being on the horizon. Handfuls of beloved entertainers no longer with us.

@@kevtb874 I'm one of those that has been listening to Dylan since the 60's, and even though I am obviously biased since I'm close to his generation, he stands out in the crowd. To me there is a poetic aspect to his songs that few songs have, and as you know that was noticed by lots of college professors of English. He will certainly go down in history as one of the greatest song writers, but when will people realize that he is one of the greatest poets ever. I think a lot of present day poets don't even realize that a great poet has been among them. One exception, I college an Argentine poet (Facundo Cabral) visited our Spanish class at the invitation of the professor, and the only thing I knew about poetry was Dylan. I asked him if he thought Dylan was a poet, and he was very familiar with Dylan as a poet. He praised Dylan's songs (as poetry), and I thought, "and this from an Argentine". That was in the 70's and back then Dylan wasn't really main stream. That confirmed it to me that Dylan really is a poet. That Argentine poet was already world famous in the Spanish speaking world when I met him, but I didn't realize it at the time. I only learned of his fame decades later on hearing of his death.

Dear Peter: I also am 76 years old and and have been an ardent admirer of Bob Dylan's work since the 60's. Imagine my astonishment when Slow Train came out and I discovered that my hero had embraced the faith that I confess. I'm not interested in argument or speculation as to his current commitment but the fact that he still sings these songs is enough for me. So, from one fan to another , my earnest desire and prayer to God is that when I reach the great song fest in eternity that Bob and I and you will be there to sing praise to my Lord and Savior Jesus who looks in love on the unlovely and unloved when we confess His name. Our time on this mortal coil is short but God is eternal and made us as eternal spirits who can only find true happiness by growing ever closer to God. As humans it’s sometimes difficult to understand but sometimes things of great beauty help us to catch just a fleeting glimpse of the beauty and greatness of God who created all that is good and is surely more beautiful and great than we can ever fully conceive within our physical brains. The only true understanding is spiritual. God bless you all who are searching and striving to always grow closer to the Magnificent Creator of all good things. Peace.

I am 60 years old and have listened to His musi for 40 year's. Had a nasty little habit with opiates, and it says exactly what I would written if I could have. Who else could, no one. Words like, confession, despair, dying, etc, etc. These lyrics would have same effect on anyone going through any trauma in their lives. No matter what it is, or how big or small small. Any problem is a problem to the individual . What a piece of work . There is not a word to describe how good this song is.😢😊
