Fifty years ago Gibson was my number 1 baseball hero. Still a Cardinal fan and he remains the Cards greatest pitcher of all time.

Yeah, when I hear the name Bob Gibson, I think chin music...saw him pitch from near the press box at Forbes Field in 1964...I felt bad for the hitters to have to face him...

You are looking at the best righthanded pitcher of his time perhaps of all time.

Great interview. He comes across as a witty, self-poised individual who is far ahead of others when it comes to his opinions about baseball. Those were the great days of Gibson, Mays, Marichal, Mantle, Koufax, Clemente, Kaline, Drysdale, Cepeda, McCovey, Wills, Aparicio, etc., etc.
@bencovington11215 жыл бұрын
Koufax and Gibson both went through a period of time when they were absolutely unhittable. I can't think of another pitcher who had those runs during their career.

Thanks for posting. Bob Gibson retired before I was born, but I'm still a big fan.

IMO, one of the most intelligent persons I've ever listened to....So logical.

One of the finest pitchers who ever threw a baseball. Gibson had it all...he was intimidating, had a great fastball and was an all-around great athlete. I think he was a bit overshadowed because he pitched during the Koufax era. If I had to win a game to save my life, this guy would be my pitcher.

Well, some of us can love them both...both were winners who came up big in big games...

Hes a no good SOB or was!Jerk actually liked throwing at batters. Everybody forgets he almost killed Tommie Agee in the first spring training game in 1968 !An exhibition game!Bastard !

What I find incredible was his ERA was 1.12 and yet he still lost 9 games. Had the Cardinals scored 2 or 3 runs for him in tose 9 games he could have gone from 22-9 to 31-0.

1burnman: When toeing the WE strikeout record, to McCarver: "Give me the ball, give me the ball," Mr Gibson looks at the scoreboard turns back around, holds out kid hand: "ALRIGHT, NOW GIVE ME THE BALL"!!. McCarver gave him the ball. Struck out the next better to end the game. Detroit player said he was throwing radio balls. "We heard them, but didn't see them",

77 years old. Does he drink formaldehyde or something? This man is a treasure.

Ditto. I was born in 1950 and in my life time, to me, Koufax was the best left handed picture and Gibson was the best right hander.

He was an intimidating pitcher. I sometimes get the feeling he didn't understand how intimidating he appeared to be to people who actually admired him, like the press.

A great interview with the greatest of his time. I was amazed that the reporters weren't bombarding him with more questions. There's a man with a wealth of knowledge and experience who was one of great pitchers in one of the best timees for baseball I can understand Gibby being pissed about lowering the mound, but they had only recently raised the mound after the expansion years in 61 and 62 due to the enormous hitting that went on those years. So when the pitchers dominated so incredibly by 68, they lowered it back down. Still even during that period of time there were teams that had lower and higher mounds depending on their pitchers. Raised mound or lowered though, Gibby was one of the greatest pitchers ever and in a game on the line he was the one along with Koufax that you wanted to see. Gibby was always at his best in the World Series. The amazing thing about Gibby and the other great ptichers was that they accomplished all that they did having to go the full game.

I looked up Bob Gibson's college basketball statistics when he played at Creighton. He averaged 20.8 points per game in 1954-1955, 22.0 points per game in 1955-1956, and 17.7 points per game in 1956-1957 for a career points per game average of 20.3 points per game. Needless to say, he is quite an athlete!

7-2 win/loss record World Series not withstanding did not have luxury of Yankees hitting behind him,in a team sport in the World Series he did it by himself.9 W.S. starts 9 decisions won't compare him in regular season BUT as a starting World Series pitcher Bob Gibson G.O.A.T. Period.
@TheBatugan774 жыл бұрын
