About 35 years ago, I worked in a University town (Western University - London, Ontario, Canada) and Bob Newhart performed at the University. It was the greatest stand-up I had ever seen or will ever see. Newhart will always be the master of deadpan - the art of deriving humour through humourlessness. Yes, Leslie Nielsen was also a master in his own right, but he derived his humour through the absurd, Newhart pulled it from nothing. His greatest comedic achievement...making his entire 1992 series a dream he was having in his 1972 series.

Newhart was in a war movie with James Coburn, Steve McQueen, and a bunch of other stars. He had been transferred in as a replacement...from supply. The troops found a German mic in their outpost and told Newhart to make it sound like he was talking on the phone. He was supposed to make it sound like the outpost was swimming in G.I.s and they had no room for more. Essentially, they had him doing a skit on the phone!
