The Smothers Brothers

Күн бұрын

In Loving Memory of Bob Newhart, we are posting this classic bit in which Bob Newhart plays an air traffic controller.
The Smothers Brothers
The Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, are one of the most iconic comedy duos in the history of television. Tom and Dick began performing as a duo in the late 1950s, playing in coffeehouses and clubs in San Francisco. Their act consisted of music, comedy, and witty banter, which quickly gained them a following.
The Smothers Brothers became a household name in the late 1960s with their variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The show was groundbreaking in its approach to comedy, pushing the boundaries with political satire and social commentary. The show also featured up-and-coming musical acts, including The Doors and The Who, and introduced the world to comedians like Steve Martin and George Carlin.
The Smothers Brothers' irreverent style has made them a beloved and enduring force in American comedy.

When my father died suddenly after a very short illness, aside from my grief I was dealing with all the stress of funerals and finances and the things that go with a sudden death. My mother had already gone, and my only sibling lived some way away so it was pretty much down to me. The stress meant that i wasn't sleeping and was altogether pretty miserable. Then a friend gave me a Bob Newhart tape. I decided to listen to it one night when I couldn't sleep and found myself relaxing for the first time in weeks. I even laughed. It was lovely and I have been grateful to Newhart ever since.

I first heard Bob Newhart when his "The Button Down Mind Of Bob Newhart" came out. I was 11 years old at the time. My father came home with it. He bought the album because he was a driving instructor and someone had told him of the skit called the "Driving Instructor". I loved that album. Sixty some odd years later I can still remember a lot of the actual monologues. Newhart had an active career of sixty years in an industry that chews'em up and spits'em out, a testament to the timelessness of his comedy. Thank you Bob, for the brightness you brought to the world. RIP.

You were never really sure what the next line would be or where the story was going to go...trait of a good story teller to keep you engaged. As an Aussie I remember one example of his humour that tickled me and I never forgot. He was going on holiday and saw a sign at a motel which said that the tariff was cheaper if you made your own bed. So he signed in and was handed some timber and a hammer and nails. @essiebessie661 - As a child, I took my first PAA flight from Montego Bay Jamaica to JFK aboard a brand new B747. It was magical. I still describe the PAA cabin crew as the closest thing to Angels we have here on Earth. My worst flight ever was on a Braniff flight from DFW to ORD during February in the late 70s. Chicago weather was a real doozy. We departed DFW at 1900, expecting to land at 2100. We didn't land until 0400, with refuelling stops in St. Louis and Milwaukee. What made it so bad was one of the cabin crew throwing up in the galley during turbulence. After that, the passengers took over the economy section and gave away all the alcohol. It was a real circus.

I must say that the sadness of Bob Newhart's passing is almost compensated for by the afct that so many of these sketches had become really difficult to find, anywhere. And now we're finding them popping up all over. Bob Newhart was quite probably THE greatest comedian to come out of the USA in mine, or anybody else's lifetime. There are other comedians who you might argue; Abbott and Costello, Richard Pryor perhaps. But none that are so convincingly special that you have no doubt. And what continues to amaze me is that Bob Newhart, that incredible talent, those unforgettable monologs, only ever won a single Emmy! If there is one thing that persuades you that awards are the most ridiculous bit of unimportant fluff, the most insincere way for the unknowing to support the talented, then that one statistic says it all. The one consolation for me, is that he almost certainly couldn't have cared less.
