Bob Odenkirk’s Oral History of Saul Goodman: From ‘Breaking Bad’ to ‘Better Call Saul’

Vince Gilligan thought a Saul Goodman spinoff was a good idea almost immediately after the character’s first appearance on ‘Breaking Bad’ - the man who plays him, Bob Odenkirk, would take some more convincing. In this exclusive oral history of Goodman, alter-ego to the conman/lawyer/cellphone dealer Jimmy McGill, Odenkirk shares the story of how he got the role of Walter White’s shady lawyer on ‘Breaking Bad,’ breaks down some of Goodman’s best moments in that show, and reveals the pitch that got him to sign up for the prequel ‘Better Call Saul,’ now in its fifth Certified Fresh season. And, as he gets ready to say goodbye to the character of McGill/Saul - the AMC series will conclude after its sixth season, set to release next year - Odenkirk also spoke at length with Rotten Tomatoes about the relationship between Chuck and Jimmy, the (probably) doomed future of Jimmy and Kim, and what it’s like to play Goodman as the series races towards the events of ‘Breaking Bad.’

Right?? “Let’s create this mike character because Bob can’t shoot the 4th episode” ends up being one of the most important character in both shows. “This guy Aaron Paul is pretty good, I thought about killing him by the end of season 1 but let’s keep him a little bit more and see how it goes” actually outlives Walt and is a key player throughout the rest of the show. Those decisions are definitely arbitrary, but they spend hundreds of hours making sure every single detail after making that decision will fit into place, these writers are truly admirable and you can tell that they love their craft

I’ve been saying this, if Kim was dead or in jail because of him in BBs timeline, there’s no way jimmy could be a functioning human being, let alone play his Saul Goodman persona with such confidence and joy. I feel the same way as Bob, they are not together anymore during that timeline, but each moved on and they probably even run into each other from time to time. What I wanna see is how it plays out at the end, during Gene's timeline

The day the first trailer for BCS dropped, a friend of mine called to tell me he sat next to Bob Odenkirk on a flight from Los Angeles to Texas. He didn't bother him. Odenkirk had a big stack of Esquire magazines and some unplugged headphones. It was clear he didn't want to be bothered. My friend respected that, pulling out his own book, a historical nonfiction book by Reza Aslan about the origins of Jesus Christ. Apparently Odenkirk noticed, and struck up an enjoyable conversation about Jesus that lasted most of the flight. At no point during the flight did my friend acknowledge recognizing him as an actor. At the end, my friend told me he considered asking for an autograph on my behalf, but didn't. I told him it was the right move.

This video was posted on my birthday and it was the best present I got this year. I've been a huge Bob Odenkirk fan since the mid-90's when I took it upon myself to go out and proselytize and spread the word to all my friends and select members of my family about Mr. Show which I felt everyone in the world needed to see. After Mr. Show I kept people informed always on what Mr. Odenkirk was up to over the years and not just Bob but his brother Bill and every time I would see John Ennis or Jay Johnstone in something I'd point him out to people and if they weren't familiar with that whole crew or with Bob I'd give them the whole spiel with the firm belief that I was helping people to enrich their lives and not just boring the hell out of everyone. And so as a result people around me became fans too even people I would least suspect. I have an uncle who is fairly conservative and Let's Go To Prison is his all-time favorite movie, my nephew loved Futurama and the family bought him almost all of show's action figures, my youngest brother borrowed my Mr. Show DVD's and showed them to all his roommates and friends in college, and so on. And then came Breaking Bad which my brother introduced me to and when Season 2 Episode 8 aired for the first time we both lost our freaking minds. Here was a show which we both liked a lot and watched together, the first time we were dedicated to a show since the damn X-Files (which is pretty ironic), and then all of the sudden, perhaps my favorite famous person, Bob freaking Odenkirk shows up in the show? It was mindblowing. And then after all the talk about BCS and the way it seemed like it was being delayed and like it was one of those things that was better in theory than in practice, like something that is fun to talk about and dream about but would just never work out in any conceivable way, it just felt like it was never going to actually happen. And then it did and it ended up being better than the original show and surpassing all of my guarded expectations and now it's the only show me and my other brother watch together, again, the first show the two of us have watched together since X-Files. And it keeps getting better every season. It isn't like Dexter which took a huge nosedive at the end, it isn't like Fargo (which Bob was great in) or True Detective which has as many bad seasons as good (actually I think Fargo has 2 good 1 bad and TD has just that one good first with Season 2 having more strong moments in total than Season 3 did) and my only comedy show left, Always Sunny has gone down in quality to the point that I didn't even bother with watching the most recent season yet. BCS is still great, somehow it keeps getting better, and the people behind it have already demonstrated that they know when to make an exit so as much as I'm gonna miss the show after it's over I'd much rather remember it fondly than be in the position to where I start to wonder why I liked it in the first place like I do with shows that have worn out their welcome. And I am so freaking happy for this guy that I am a borderline creepy almost stalker-like fan of. With all that he's done behind the cameras for the beginning of his career, with all the time that he spent making people who were household names look good while at the same time remaining an unknown, and with how nice of a guy he seems to be in real life, it just couldn't have happened to a nicer guy to be the star of the best show on television.

Great interview, where Bob Odenkirk is speaking so honestly. Also, it's so impressive to hear about the writing team for BB and BCS just runs with the flow and are figuring out the story 1 episode at a time (inventing the character of Mike cause Odenkirk cannot appear in an episode), are spontaneous and open to new ideas (Odenkirk suggesting the character have a mullet and Vince Gilligan just going for it) and still make the story so darn good and feeling like a generic, whole story. My thoughts on the Jimmy and Kim situation. She probably doesn't die because then Jimmy would probably not go on as Saul Goodman since that's the character that probably got Kim hurt trough his actions. I think that they split up under different circumstances and that's how it stayed during breaking bad and his future as a cinnamon-bun salesman. But I think in the end of all this, situation with Saul going undercover and being afraid constantly and not really having a great life will end happily... I think Kim will look him up and be outside his house at some point, and it all ends up with them getting back together. That's the ending I want at least :)
