Watched this for Asian Philosophy 301. I've watched several of Thurman's videos because after seeing this. He is very right, in my opinion, and I wish everyone would find their happiness. The world would be a much better place if we followed this mans advice.

Please tell Professor Bob Thurman to direct his Buddhist research in my direction. Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. In Pidhauli (Vaishali) the local deity is Bardiha Baba. Bardiha means the Baba who didn't allow us to stay where he was staying. Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you. I have just videographed Maha Prajapati Gautamies Parinirvana temple. She is regarded the great grandmother of that are just as Buddha is regarded as grandfather (Baba). There are many more examples.

In General. 'Not to do any evil; to cultivate good; to purify one's heart - this is the teaching of all the Buddhas. ' Although Buddhists value highly such virtues as loving kindness, humanity, patience and giving, perhaps they value wisdom and compassion most of all.

Yes I lived in a sherpa monastery several years. Westerners would think it must be difficult and serious, I found it to be the most fun wild time of my life (despite the very basic life and lack of fresh fruit and veg). The monks would say that people from materialistic countries (who looked so serious) had 'their hearts knotted'. I also worked for Mother Teresa, she said what kept her going was 'the joy of giving'.

Buddha is an example of human who cumulatively developed himself, through so many rebirths or incarnations, until gaining the ultimate wisdom of nature. This wisdom is nothing to do with thinking or thought. Buddha told us another nature, called mindfulness, that we human can develop by realizing our own body movement and mind (consciousness) movement straightforwardly. Mindfulness is not about thinking. It's just realizing body and mind as they are really are at a moment.

There's no self in this entire universe but the rhythm of nature. There's no self in air earth fire and water, neither in Feeling, Perception, Volitional formations and consciousness. There's only Clinging manifested withing these inseparable 5 aggregates Form, Feeling, Perception, Volitional formations and Consciousness. The Clinging of I AM. The manifestation of the I AM, and it's the course of all suffering, to cease the suffering is ceased the Clinging. The universe is impermanence, thing generated from impermanence how could it be permanent, there for there's no self but elements working together to create this illusion mind.

To be happy is to cease the existence of the I AM , that's the only way. Eightfold path is the way leading to the cessation of Clinging. To perceive this 5 aggregates as Impermanence, as it's none self.

For my fellow Buddhists, all of this negativity is a waste of precious, beautiful time. For those coming from an organized religion's viewpoint, your negativity and judgemental attitude is the reason I left you and embraced the beautiful dharma of The Buddha. ~Peace~

when studying Buddhist philosophy is it crucial to know exactly what "Satori" means, and what "Nirvana," "Emptiness," "Compassion," Suffering," "Samsara," and "Enlightenment" mean. We have to know what the Buddhist mystics and monks meant by these words. It's a translation issue that anyone studying or trying to understand any ancient text must go through (technically, you need the signified in order to know the corresponding referent of the particular signifier).

In Tibetan Uma refers both to Madhyamika (middle way) philosophy as well as the central channel. Kinda gives you a sense of how profound the meaning of the Middle way is. It's fun trying to enumerate all the meanings of the Middle Way, I think it's pretty incredible.

The study of algebra, the name of which is derived from the Arabic word meaning completion or "reunion of broken parts",[3] flourished during the Islamic golden age. Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, a scholar in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, is along with the Greek mathematician Diophantus, known as the father of algebra. In his book The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing, Al-Khwarizmi deals with ways to solve for the positive roots of first and second degree (linear and quadratic) polynomial equations. He also introduces the method of reduction, and unlike Diophantus, gives general solutions for the equations he deals with.[4][5][6] Al-Khwarizmi's algebra was rhetorical, which means that the equations were written out in full sentences. This was unlike the algebraic work of Diophantus, which was syncopated, meaning that some symbolism is used. The transition to symbolic algebra, where only symbols are used, can be seen in the work of Ibn al-Banna' al-Marrakushi and Abū al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī al-Qalaṣādī. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics_in_medieval_Islam

Any kind religions is like that, Sir. If POLITIC didn't revise the original doctrines. If POLITIC didn't took control of rights of believers. If MEDIA introducing religions as brutal judgement, worst trials, bad doctrines or as Myth.....it is because 95% MEDIA made in JEWISH Americans who standing in TWO SIDES as PRO ISRAEL and ANTI ISRAEL. If all kind religions just do whatever they are believing, you and others will seeing PEACE and COMPASSION. Catholic churches in anywhere built Schools, Hospitals, social foundations to feeding and helping poor people in anywhere. That actions is part of COMPASSION. They open dialogue to other religions, while others DOESN'T if they are majority (such in Myanmar that Buddhism is MAJORITY or Pakistan that Islam is majority). Each religions having their own bad terms and mistakes. :) So, why we compare them by idea LIKE or DISLIKE? Every people, in any kind of religions, having fear to controlled by others religions. It is NORMAL. When politicians and religious leaders commit to oppress minority....and then the situation going badly. That is what MEDIA today share to all the world. ISIS represented of ISLAM. TRUMP represented of Christians and Bibi Netanyahu represented Judaism. So, when society got the same information each days, they think these one is the FACT and TRUTH. But you agree if Buddhist Myanmar oppress Christians and Islam in there represented your religion? If YES, and then, ATHEIST won the battle. All RELIGIONS are the same. The behavior of religions members linked or connecting with their religions doctrines. :) You chose to be Buddhist. It is your rights. Do what you believe without comparing it with others. Especially with idea 'COMPASSIONATE' and SCIENCE. Because Catholic (most of them are Jesuits) did it regularly, from time to time, from generation to generation. And you still didn't believe in their religion doctrines. :)

@HIHIMIII56 Faith is also a part of it. Not many people say this, but it's important. I meditate regularly and each time I do I observe and continue to observe, which is Vipassana meditation. Each time I sit down to meditate though, there is doubt whether there is progress. Knowledge, insight, concentration, loving-kindness, wisdom and faith are all part of achieving Nirvana. Faith keeps you on the path when your understanding is diluted. Some religions take it to extremes though

Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. FYI Albert Einstein called himself an agnostic. He was later drawn to Buddhism. Wikipedia says.... "Einstein expressed his skepticism regarding an anthropomorphic deity [God], often describing it as "naïve" and "childlike". He stated, "It seems to me that the idea of a personal God is an anthropological concept which I cannot take seriously. "I do not believe in immortality of the individual, and I consider ethics to be an exclusively human concern with no superhuman authority behind it."

It comes across like a modern GORE-FEST mixed with Alice In Wonderland and some DR. WHO mixed in for good measure... there ARE some that have managed to look BEYOND the surface and see underneath... I looked into it one day after finding a documentary on "Tibetan Sky Burials"... (and I am pretty sure Bob is PRETTY STRAIGHT FORWARD about his DRUG USE) So what's your point? I feel that Dr. Thurman is trying to give the audience practical advice on how to become more compassionate but he does so in such a general way that the audience probably do not benefit from it in the long run. For instance, he speaks of alleviating suffering by helping others instead of focusing on oneself, but to think like this without true insight is simply running away. Truth can only be found by by looking deeply and following the middle way.

I will go one step further. It is not just trans religious dialoges that are needed, although I think given the exclusive nature of most religions, that doesnot usually get anywhere. And to do this crucial task, one must actually experience the referent. You must have the experience to know what the words actually mean, and this involves taking up a similar injunction used by the authors to produce or induce that referent or shared experience they are now writing about. Galileo makes a claim about moons. Then he says look through the telescope. That's the injunction. You look, and now have a better idea of what "the moons of Jupiter" mean; you have experienced the referent,

I was surprised to read Sota-Zen master Yasutani-Roshi say faith is necessary to reach Enlightment since in Zen"-meditation" you should empty your mind completely free from any presumption. Also when learning you should approach without any preconception. Use instruments for measuring (they do not have feeling or biases like humans). Make the test double blind - the person collecting the data and the person being experimented upon, only know their part in the test...

@outerspaceym, Miracles and supernatural can be found in Buddhist scriptures like any other religions. But they were often brought out to get the message of the Buddha easier to most of the people. My point is that they could be left out, for beliefs in miracles and supernaturals are not required in Buddhism. In fact, the only miracle or supernatural power the Buddha did approved is human wills power to be better, to conquest ourselves, and to be free through our wisdom, not something else.

Buddhanetdotnet: "Buddhism is not a system of faith and worship owing any allegiance to a supernatural being." "The starting point of Buddhism is reasoning or understanding, or, in the Pali words, samma-ditthi." This is totally the opposite of christianity or islam since they don't concern themselves with reasoning but only blind 'faith'. Therefore, buddhism is not a religion at all in the sense of how we western ppl define a religion.

Buddhism is RELIGION because they have routine ritual devotion and temple. They have doctrines and religious dogmas. :) If you against that idea, and then Buddhism is just IDEA. That's why no need FAITH and spiritual actions. And then.....that meditation......not DEVOTION? Just simple sit down and doing nothing? :) You think Christian and Islam having BLIND FAITH? No, Sir! If we are BLIND, we can NOT believing in ANYTHING. :) For us, Christians and Islam, also Judaism, GOD is REAL. NOT AN IDEA that THERE IS A GOD out there! NOT an IDEA how to living with others by millions wonderful words. If Buddhism found enlightenment by BUDDHA's way, we (Abraham's faith) found THE TRUTH by following Abraham's faith. Anything good in religions looks disaster when POLITIC revise it. :) Anyway, Sir.....FAITH is strong believe in something that you can not see today but you will see it later. So, when you do MEDITATION, it is FAITH also. :)

I agree there is a lot of contemplative wisdom in Buddhism, however (depending on which particular creed you follow), there are still issues of superstition and simply ideas that are too outdated. In many regars Buddhism is less hostile to reason than many other religions, but still lacks the validation mechanism that all religions lack.

Luckly, in Buddhism, this is taken very seriously into account. The Buddha taught "Perception is deception." Whatever you see is nothing but a dream of the mind. Codependent Origination, Mind-Only, madyamika, etc. The Dalai Lama says that he only knows what he has been taught by his Tibetan Culture and thus much of his oppinions (i.e. on homosexuality) doens not apply to everyone. Pluralism.

I think what's meant is that Jesus behaved more like a Buddhist rather than any Christian or Jew. Yet the "Issa" idea of Jesus traveled to India in his early 20's IS quite possible. It's not like the Bible has much to say about him until the very last 3 years of his "supernatural" life before he was executed by the Roman Empire. Some theories (such as Zeitgeist) even propose with quite compelling evidence that Jesus was an astro-theological hybrid of complete mythical origin. Just saying..idk.

..So as no one can distort the test, to provide any foregone conclusion. And finally repetition, under various circumstances, to isolate the particular factor, responsible for the observed results. Finally make a falsifiable claim that can be peer reviewed. Be self-critical, there is always something you might have missed. These are just some ways ideas are validated. After all this you still cannot be 100% absolutely sure about your result, only more sure than if you did not do them.

I watched a film called Kundun, which is loosely based on the life the current Dalai Lama, and I enjoyed it. The only thing I didn't like was the supposed supernatural element behind him being chosen. It just reminded me of the magical stories that are told about Kim Il Sung & Kim Jung Il in North Korea as part of their brainwashing methods.

@crudhousefull Sounds like you were forcing yourself into something very unnatural. For me, I found that it´s when I go quite far on doing something, live your life in a pushing myself, that´s when things starts to happen. If you live your life in a route nothing will happen to yo, nothing will change. In meditation, the more I let go the thinking, the more awere I get. Also, I´m of the opposite procedée; I try to not believe in anything and thereby precondition la destination.
