When is the last time you did absolutely nothing for 10 whole minutes? Not texting, talking or even thinking? Mindfulness expert Andy Puddicombe describes the transformative power of doing just that: Refreshing your mind for 10 minutes a day, simply by being mindful and experiencing the present moment. (No need for incense or sitting in strange positions.)

I'm only 20, but I practice mindfulness every day for about 15 minutes. Whenever I mention it to other people, they almost get offended "oh, why would you do that? Isn't that what middle aged women do?". There's such a wrongful stereotype towards it which couldn't be further from the truth. I've never understood the hesitation to try it, no one has ever tried meditation and though "well, that ruined my life, never again.". Give it a go, it can help your life in ways you wouldn't imagine.

KING FARAGE I just wrote a magazine article about this.. and in it I mentioned, a stich in time saves nine... meaning... when we take the 15 minutes a day to quiet our brain wave activity, we are empowered by our IntuitionPower in a more profound way. Magical Moments and what is referred to often as 'the law of attraction' kicks in big time super fast. If you never do it, you'll never really have those experiences in real time. Consistency and balanced focus with intent is the key. - JacQuaeline

KING FARAGE that's so sad that you tend to get that response! It's funny, because I am finding more and more people really interested in mindfulness and learning it AND I find more and more or my students are adult men! Let's hope this is changing :)

KING FARAGE Nicely put. Imagine the kind of world we would live in if everybody was did just 5 minutes of mindfulness a day. I dare say we would be damn near peace on earth. If everybody did a few hours a day? Man, I can't imagine that, my imagination skills are not up to that task at all.

+WOOOOOO! Same thing. Whenever I mention a word meditation, people always assume that I am into some spiritual stuff, which is funny, because I am pretty sceptical, pragmatic person, and I use meditation just for practical benefits. And still people are blinded by stereotype of meditation most of the time. I am really starting to think, that it is critical not to use a word meditation, while convincing other people to do it. I guess other signposts are necessary to achieve it.

I've been meditating everyday for only 2 weeks and already feel SO MUCH better. it is just stupidly amazing. i'm getting addicted to it (former hard drug user). Can't believe its gonna last long but i am definitely very excited about meditation and mindfulness. The downside of the whole thing is that none of my friends want to listen to me and they just sarcastically go away from the topic. Everyone needs to know this. It is magical.

nativenesian I'm usually a guy who keeps to himself, but I was impressed by your comment and the one you responded to. My five cents' worth: try Andy's Headspace app (free), and if his approach doesn't work for you, keep looking because different things work for different people even if the basic information or structure of the session is the same, there might just be something about a particular person's voice, accent, temperament or whatever that you find really works for you when others don't. I know the science and psychology of mindfulness and have been pursuing a technique that suits me and my situation for some time, but just the other day I tried out Andy's Headspace app and I'm so pleased with it and how down to earth encouraging it is that I'm about to subscribe to the additional content to begin to target some more specific issues, even though I found just the free content is a valuable resource by itself by helping me build a beneficial habit (usually incredibly difficult for me) and having an immediate influence on my life-long difficulties with sleep. It's a really good technique for regular everyday people just as they are right now, you don't have to be a monk or a vegan or anything other than just whoever you are wherever you find yourself to have a go at it, you know? It gives you a much-needed break from things. It can really help you start to feel better. I hope you find something that helps and wish you all the best, Markus.

zakur0hako Yes it is magical. I was lost and I couldn't exit depression, but I refused to be medicated, so a long painful search began exercise, social, study, comedy, healthy food ect ect only helped temporarily, but there it would be in the morning like clock work. Then I meditated. I literally transformed to a cool version of myself in so many ways. From compassion to confidence. Meditation for life.

As he said in the video, meditation is not about turning your brain off. Mindfulness means letting thoughts and emotions come and go as you try and passively observe them. If you start feeling sadness, for example, you don't dwell on it, but instead experience it and let if fade away. It does take practice to avoid mind-wandering (the very thing he says brings unhappiness). Though you will undoubtedly find yourself lost in thought/imagination. Don't get frustrated. Simply accept it and move on.

I've found my own system of meditation that gets me to the "present moment" state he's speaking of. I lie down on the couch, close my eyes, put headphones in, and listen to Sanskrit and Hebrew mantras set to music. After about 10-15 minutes of that, I feel so aware of the present moment that all of my worries about the past and future seem to melt away, at least for a while.

Meditation has great relevance for sports as well. You get more in tune with your instincts and just playing without thinking, often leads to greater results. For me personally, the feeling of playing is that much greater and you really get to live the game in a whole other way. More players should really look more into meditating and the mindfulness!!

everything ever said about mindfulness, takes us back to buddha's teachings...there is no escape from that...whether it is a TED talk or psychological expertise of handling stress, anxiety , etc...it's unbelievable that in this day and age we have to go back 2500 years backwards to find the awareness...what have we become!

Is this the most amazing thing or what? I can't live without Headspace anymore. I wake up to it, do it during the day if I can, and before sleep. Love it.

I must comment on that as well... as well...been stressing out too much about life like everyone do. This app headspace was the best for me-app “Calm” is good as well...but this one really calmed me down and it was so gentle and positive. This man voice is like a magic wand...magical. I feel the best result for me is always to do it everyday for even 10 min-(started with 2 min few years ago ☺️now I can go even 1 hour, but in the morning when I’m always in rush I must promise myself to do at least 10 min after brushing my teeth but before I check my emails etc. It really helped me... I really encourage anyone who life is stressful or has anxiety to make yourself do it. if you want to feel happy again and smile again it’s something to try... Everytime I was too lazy or distracted to do it I thought to myself, I brush my teeth everyday, I eat everyday I watch tv-maybe not everyday ☺️but I’m challenging myself, why should not I do everyday something that ‘reset’ my mind and makes me to smile again? 😴☺️ All the best to anyone who tries to male their life better.

This video focuses on a very important aspect of life that we (as a society) are seldom taught. My only problem is with the choice of the term 'nothing'. It's impossible to do 'nothing', and we really must have something to focus on. I believe the term 'meta' is a more accurate substitute for 'nothing' in this context. To focus on the thoughts you have, that you are having them (as opposed to giving your thoughts authority as to what you should be doing) is what you might call 'meta-thought'. For example; if you have a thought about what you should eat, to undergo the process of 'meta-thought' is to think about what it is to choose something to eat, why you choose certain foods, etc. rather than allowing the thought of choosing a food take precedence (which would be to think 'okay, let's get started on picking a food'). Mindfullness, in the context of this video, is applying what could be called 'meta-focus' to the process of 'meta-thought'. Whereas 'meta-thought' in the previous example would be to wonder about the aspects of what it is to be hungry, 'meta-focus' turns your concentration to simply that you are hungry, and allowing the feeling of hunger itself to be witnessed, without committing any energy to actively dealing with the feeling of hunger or even what it is.
