Golfweek senior writer David Dusek was recently at the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, California, and had a chance to get a lesson in wedge grinds from the man himself, Titleist's master craftsman for wedges, Bob Vokey. This video will help you understand more about the different Vokey wedge grinds and who they are ideally suited for, which can help you make a smarter purchasing decision the next time you are in the market for wedges.

@brett7011

If you're all confused. Get the 60M-08 or the 60D-10 (if youw ant more forgiveness), 56 S - 10 ( this is your very generice wedge that has common versatility. If you go down to 52 you probably want a 08 lower grind so you will want it to either be 52 s-08, and if you go all the way down to 46 get the 46F 06 or 46F08

another trick is to put lie angle tape on the bottom of the wedge to see what part of the sole is striking the ground...front, back, or middle. This is determined by your swing/release. If the mark is way in front > add more bounce (because it's digging too much)...if it's at the back of the sole > decrease the bounce (because it could skip/skull on you). Not many fitters use a lie board for this purpose.

Definitely a marketing tool for the manufacturers. Start with the wedge (s) included in the iron set you purchase then when you are proficient with those then tweak your wedge selection. Too many options unless you are a sponsored tour pro.

Can you recommend a new wedge for me? My home course has very tight fairways but *extremely* soft bunker sand. I love my 60.08M (SM9) around the greens, but it is practically worthless from the sand. My next-lofted wedge is a 54.14F (SM4), and I don’t really trust it anywhere-I tend to catch it thin both around the greens and the sand. I want the versatility to open/close the face around the greens, but need bounce to get out of the sand. Would a 56.12D be a good fit? Or a 54.12D *bent to 56*? If not, what else?

A 12-14 HC is better than the avg golfer so I don’t know what the golf snob above is talking about. I think for green side shots you have to decide whether you want to se your wedge like a putter, with the toe down and bump the ball onto the green so it rolls out. You can do this with any iron, most use a 8 or 9 iron. OR, you can use a wedge with a normal no hinge chip, weight fwd. If your green side grass is usually long, get a club with more bounce and loft so it doesn’t dig and pops the ball out. I’d say a 58-60 deg D or K grind with 12-14 deg bounce.

Ugh. Let me translate for non scratch golfers. U need two full wedge sets in most places. 1 with lots of bounce and a thin sole for early wet conditions. One with varied bounces to have 1 sw with bounce and thin soleish and 2-3 chipping wedges with a wide sole and no bounce low bounce. Keep the sw for both sets, so really it’s just 5x7 wedges total. Most real pros probably have a full bag “wet conditions set” of clubs.
@richardc6932
@richardc6932 Жыл бұрын
It’s obvious that this man has made a living from designing wedges for every tour pros’ likes and dislikes. Unless you are a pro with hours and hours of practice most mid to high handicap golfers would never appreciate the subtle differences in grinds. But it’s great for marketing as it exists in all club offerings. If you play only one course then get fitted for that type of conditions OR else buy the hole series offered as well as an additional bag to carry on the course.🙀 It will impress your playing partners until you start swinging them.👍🇨🇦👨‍🦳🥴
@johnklaus9111
@johnklaus9111 Жыл бұрын
@@richardc6932 This is also true... sort of. You'll be surprised how much difference you get matching the right bounce and sole width to the conditions. Your swing will still be ugly, but shots you hit fat before, will pop up and run. In thin sand bunkers, your club will catch and lift vs bouncing into the back of the ball. This part isn't marketing. Sorry. Though you are correct that most people that play just one course, don't need as much variation (unless you live in the UK or New England, then you do)... Enjoy Arizona, where every lie is heavenly!!!!

I’m a total beginner and my titliest t300’s 2021’s are arriving tomorrow but my set only goes to pw, can anyone recommend a vokey wedge for my short game and bunker shots , thanks
@benjaminw4385
@benjaminw4385 Жыл бұрын
The best advice would be to get fitted so your gapping is consistent as you transition from PW to your other wedges. T300's PW is 43 degrees which is quite strong for a PW, so I'd steer you to consider getting the 48 degree T300 potentially as well. Bob recommends K grind as the best in the bunker and I personally love the F grind for my other wedges since I like using them for full shots as well as around the green.

Great selection of wedges except for the 50 degree wedge comes in 8 and 12 bounce only. I find 12 too much and 8 can dig sometimes ...10 bounce is the sweet spot! If they offered a 10 bounce 50 degree I would buy it. Callaway always offers 10 bounce through all the wedges...it is the perfect blend of protection and not digging for me. Many of the Callaway pros use 10 bounce 50 or 52. Too bad the titleist wedges have a 10 bounce 46 and 54 and 56 but for some reason decided the 50 shouldn't have it and I doubt they will add it.

Buy a 52 degree 12 bounce and bend it to 50 and you will have 10 degree bounce on that wedge
@retired8123
@retired8123 Жыл бұрын
@@jakephelps4766 I thought about that but my pw is 45...48 degrees is a bit too close of a gap.Good idea though.... Maybe I can go 49 and 11 bounce so its pretty close.Does that change the face angle like it does with adjustable woods?
@jakephelps4766
@jakephelps4766 Жыл бұрын
@@retired8123 I think you misread. if you bought a 52 degree with 12 degrees of bounce and then bent it to 50 you would still have 5 degrees between the pw and the 50 degree and get your desired 10 degree of bounce 50 degree. Theoretically, yes, bending does influence face angle a touch. It also appears to influence offset a touch, at least imo. Bending clubs stronger opens the face and gives you the appearance of a bit less offset.
