Though I've been a long time Bond fan and Moonraker was the first Bond movie I ever saw in the cinema or movie theater, I did see "Sir" Timothy Dalton in person! In 1994-95 I used to work at Hollywood Center Studios and while walking the lot one late am I saw three people huddled outside of one of the soundstages: two women and one man. As I was passing them, I did a double-take and saw Timothy Dalton facing me and he noticed that I recognized him. He was smoking those long dark wrapped cigarettes, and he graciously acknowledged me with a gentlemen nod of the head. I was immediately star-struck, my one and only time that I ever came in contact with a real-life Bond actor celebrity!!

@@animfan98I think his stage career may have been more important to him. His best film performances (the great ones) are those that allow some more stagey acting, in my opinion. My favorites are Hawks & The King's Whore, but he was terrific in many films, especially costume dramas. He always seems completely natural in period costume. Great physical actor, too, believable every time. I meant to add, I don't agree that he's underrated or overlooked. I just don't think he ever set his sights on being a movie star. He's done some wonderful, odd work -- thinking of The Rocketeer, Brenda Starr, Flash Gordon -- he engages those cartoonish roles with seriousness and a sense of fun. I can think of no other actor of his calibre who could have done that.

I love Goldeneye the way it is, but the scene on the beach with Natalya falls flat with Brosnan, as he doesn't seem introspective enough for his "It's what keeps me alive" remark ; Dalton really would have delivered that line! Also, 006's "I might as well ask you if all the Vodka Martinis ever silence the screams of all the men you've killed" doesn't work with Brosnan as I don't get a sense that he (at least at that point) was really bothered by anything.

What's wrong with Roger Moore's Bond films. I recently watched A View To a Kill and thought it was really good. I even gave Moonraker a 10/10 which a lot of fans seem to hate. I didn't really see any issue with it. Maybe taking Bond into space was a little too much but it was handled brilliantly.

J.J. Moonraker was a cynical attempt at jumping on the Star Wars bandwagon. The novelised version where Bond tries to prevent a nuclear missile from being fired on London (not from space) would of suited Connery or Dalton, but Moore? No chance. What a delightful, intelligent, thoughtful, talented man Timothy Dalton is. He's so respectful of the franchise and the interviewer. He treated Ian Fleming's work almost as he would Shakespeare. As to him playing Bond as a romantic though, I would argue that Connery seldom played Bond with any romance. Yes, Lazenby was the first to be properly romantic and fall in love as Bond, but Roger Moore truly cemented Bond as a romantic, lightly in Live and Let Die, more so in The Spy Who Loved Me, as a caring team with Melina, diligent chaperone for Bibi and a mature lover with Lisl in For Your Eyes Only, but also truly mature and passionate with Maud Adams in Octopussy. Roger's Bond also gelled well with Dr Holly Goodhead in Moonraker. They truly felt like couple material. This is all reflected in the theme songs 1977-1983 inclusive. Roger Moore doesn't get enough credit for that. Giving Bond a heart wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
