Cantilever Design Composition… One of my Favorites!
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This BobBlast features one of my go-to compositions I use when painting abstracts, figures, floral and landscapes. It is the Cantilever Composition… also known as Off-Balance, Asymmetric, Askew or Disproportion!
Simply put - This composition is a whole lot of something on one side and a small, alone thing on the other side. It may not seem visually balanced, but it is an esthetic design from nature that is surprisingly attention-getting.
For this Composition, think:
• BIG vs small
• Chaos vs order
• Soft edges vs hard edges
It is up to the painter to create a “balanced” composition, without the constraints of making the painting symmetrical. For me, asymmetrical is a lot more interesting and freeing than trying to create symmetry. You can achieve that in your painting by using contrasting light and dark colors or values, bright colors and neutrals and also balancing shapes-whether you are using geometric shapes or organic shapes. The possibilities of play are endless!
This strong compositional design can also suggest an emotional title and message…

You get the idea!
Just go for the balance… a whole lot of stuff one one side and a little bit of stuff on the other!

So much irony in this clip for me. "Canteliever". You just desribed my last 12 hours. All this over the top football hype going on (which I joyfully bought into); and then on a quiet road in Kenya, the 24 year old star of my sport, the marathon, dies in a car crash. They had just ratified his world record last week.I'm in shock. I'm going to go drown my sorrows now in a few tubes of Golden and Holbein . Thank you for showing me some the inspiration on how to do some grieving. God bless you.

Thank you for the idea - The watercolor paper that I use - Fabriano Artistico and Kilimanjaro (Cheap Joe's) don't curl on me - I use at least 140 lb and often use 300 lb.

Hi Jenny - It just depends... sometimes the videos are 20 minutes, other times 7. We do not have a formula for time.
