The contract relax stretch they were discussing at 5:20 is a PNF stretch (stands for proprio neuromuscular facilitation) it’s the best for making gains in flexibility something to remember when doing this that they didn’t touch on , is it should only be performed twice a week because you can cause damage and lead you to become more tight and reduce your overall performance in sport as opposed to increasing it . Subsequently your warm up should be a little more intense than what they suggested for just static stretching, something like 10-15 min for pnf because it’s a intense stretch.

At 4:02 your left leg is pointed outwards towards your left. What are your thoughts about trying to keep that left leg more parallel to You're right leg? I just noticed I always have my legs open when stretching and if I line them up the stretch becomes more difficult. Are there any advantages to that? Is it recommended at all?

You presented static stretching, isometric stretching, dynamics movement stretching, and contract-relax stretching as ways to improve flexibility. Is there a stretching order that should be done to maximize your flexibility and kicking height? Should dynamic stretching be done at the being of a martial arts training session rather than static stretching to warm up muscles and static stretching done close to the end of a session because muscles are warm and maybe more pliable?

Off topic question, if I may, In a previous video on possibly dangerous exercises, I understood you to recommend against squats. Do you also recommend against deep ( thighs parallel to the floor ) knee bends ? I do them with a Theraband mini just above my knees as part of my routine.
@robertfox057 жыл бұрын
Dennis Mcfarland the squat is possibly dangerous if you go too heavy because you can injure your back when you lose form. I stopped doing squats because the bar started to press on my spine because my traps are underdeveloped and can't support the bar. You can do front squats with a lower weight, but I recommend Bulgarian split squats, brutal and effective. If you're gonna do squats, go all the way down, but don't go so far to sit on your calves, I noticed it tends to stress my knees too much. Go down far enough that you can slip a pencil or a piece of paper in between your hamstring and calf in the lower part of the movement. And when you go up, don't forcefully lock out your knees, straighten your legs but keep full control. If your weight is controlling and pulling you instead the other way round, you're going too heavy and need to lighten the load up.

I learned from a very early age to NEVER let anyone else 'assist' me in stretching when one idiot felt I could go a lot further than when I told him to stop. He pushed my leg right to the wall, easily a foot past my limit and ripped the shreds out of my leg. It took over a year to recover to the point of no pain and I NEVER regained the flexibility I had with that leg at that point. Do not stretch with a partner! You are trusting them with your life!

physicaltherapyvideo I thought it was hilarious because it's so obvious that you're good guys who don't mean it. For the hamstring stretch on the table: is it okay if the leg is in a 90° angle to the other one or would that be too high? Thank you for all your videos! - A fan from Germany
