Simple answer. Out of the three of them, Bobby Brown is number THREE! I loved Whitney Houston, but just because she crowned Bobby the ‘King of R&B’ doesn’t make it a fact…. Usher is number one in this group. Both Usher and Chris are better dancers than Bobby, but the number one test is VOCALS. That goes to Usher all day long!!!

"Don't Be Cruel" was definitely the male version of "Control". Bobby really wanted to make it known that he could be a solo artist in his own right outside of New Edition in the same way Janet wanted to let people know, I'm in control and I'm not defined by being a "Jackson". Classic albums on both parts.

He was the first (for lack of a better word) "Urban" RnB artist. His image and swagger brought about a street image that was somewhat touched upon in mainstream RnB while he was still in New Edition. He also was one of the first to have New Jack Swing as a predominant genre of their album that crossed over. Having said all of that, being the king of RnB means that you dominated that genre for a significant amount of time. I can't think of anyone who did that more than R Kelly. That's just facts. Tons of hits for himself and others. Yes, his career and personal life have come under scrutiny and continue to remain under scrutiny, but we can't deny what he did for the culture of Rhythm And Blues

Isaac Hayes had similar swagger and street image a decade and a half before. The late 80's era was a call back to the roots of soul music and many in the "nostalgic after an artist's passing" crowd forget that crossover superstars were mocked and urban programmers and even listeners couldn't wait for their hits and crossover appeal to leave the charts. What you hear today on playlists is different from listening to the radio in 1990. R Kelly got ghosted and Michael fought and won but almost ended up in a similar fate for his misjudgments and associations.

@@TruthB7Told When I said that Bobby was the first Urban RnB artist, I should've said Hip Hop RnB because he was literally rapping. Didn't go full on like Jodeci and Mary J Blige did, but his attitude had Hip Hop's DNA all in it So my mistake on that. Going back to Bobby for a second, saying Bobby's the King of RnB is like saying Biggie is the GOAT of Hip Hop. Too few hits in his catalog. Now of course they were HUGE hits but he didn't have the run that Kelly did. And neither did anyone else we'd bring up in the conversation from that era

I don't remember what year that was but I'm sure was definitely up for debate at the time. Bobby definitely broke the mold for what an RnB singer was.

Bobby Brown is Definitely the original King of R&B Interms of the R&B bad boy wave that came out during the 90’s and early 00’s he was the first that came out the late 80’s to early 90’s he help bring change the style, image and sound of R&B, but he isn’t the overall King, he’s one of them, also Bobby’s album after “Don’t be Cruel” was the last biggest album for a male solo artist in 1992 in terms of new Jack swing, after that album came out, Bobby brown was still a huge star with new songs at the time like Humpin around, get away , and Good enough, and something in common with Whitney Houston, he had a successful world tour off that album, he beat Michael Jackson for an AMA award with Humpin Around, hosted the AMA’s in 93 and performed as well, the reason why Bobby brown didn’t live up to his full potential is because he checked out of music industry legitimately around the same time when R&B started taking over the radios and everywhere, when Rkelly, TLC, Mary J Blige, Jodeci, usher and others, I call it the most most competitive era of R&B, mid to late 90s R&B is the first type of R&B’s most people think about even the early 80s as well, Bobby was a part of the late 80s to the early 90s New Jack Swing Era, the era of dance, and being more important than singing, when people think of R&B, they think of vocals, that’s why people bring up, R. Kelly, Chris Brown, and Usher in the King of R&B spot and even Luther Vandross, Bobby brown can sing but his vocals even his prime were hit or miss, he didn’t always sound perfect but always had enough to make hits and make it sound convincing and look good at the same time, if Bobby would’ve had more of a hand in R&B during 94-99 he would always be apart of the Conversation when it comes to the King of R&B, but because he was from 86-93, that’s the issue, I don’t think a lot of R&B lovers really are big on new Jack swing, especially my generation

I had to comment on this so I will say huge fan of Bobby and Usher.. like Chris too.. Bobby dominated in his era with just one album and he lives off that don’t be cruel and Bobby albums.. I think people forget his third album went platinum too. Bobby changed the way R&B was set up he brought the hip hop aspect into it and he doesn’t get enough credit for that.. he honestly was the blue print. Bobby could work a stage like no one and he definetly deserves King of Stage because in his heyday i would put him against any of them including Michael he was up there with them. But going forward no one wants to say or agree but Rkelly pick up where Bobby slacked off and ran with it.. Bobby definitely should have owned the late 90s he was the original power line for goofy movie and a lot other music and movies he didn’t capitalize off of.. Bobby Brown is the Undisputed late 80s early 90s king of R&B! He set the standard for the boys after he influenced a Michael and Whitney album for new Jack swing and he popularized a whole genre period. I think he definetly doesn’t get the credit i always say him and Lauryn are able to tour off one album that speaks volumes as one album sold their success for rest of their life but Bobby’s other albums after don’t be cruel we’re just as good but because he had all that trouble and married to Whitney it gets overshadowed and forgotten. Usher held 90s down and Chris is keeping r&b alive but I won’t give him King he just doesn’t have timeless hits like that to me but his features 🔥🔥🔥 and his albums have few hidden r&b gems, but Robert Kelly is the King of R&B after Bobby and going forward he just won’t get the glory behind it!!

I'll start by saying, I like B. Brown. . .I'm a fan. That said, I'm also a realist and a truth-teller. Bobby had 3 albums, and he was unquestionably a great performer. But come on Fam, he ain't King of nuthin' . Now, I'm not saying this as one of his obsessive fans, as I no longer support R.Kelly. However, no matter what he's done in his personal life, no one can deny his contributions and impact on the genre. His catalog is EPIC! If any one has the balls to claim that title, it's should be R. Kelly. Ya'll must've forgotten how them Bobby being King of R&B shenanigans came about. So I'm bout to remind ya'll. WHITNEY BLURTED IT OUT DURING AN AWARD ACCEPTANCE SPEECH WHILE SHE WAS HIGH AS GIRAFFE Booty That's should tell you how credible that moniker was/is as it relates to Bobby. No shade. . .just facts.

Despite his short run and all the negative publicly every artist from even R Kelly himself, Usher and Chris Brown all followed Bobby Brown’s blueprint he literally changed the R and B game incorporated hip hop with R and B and was the first urban R and B pop star he pioneered the bad boy image in R and B he is the original bad boy of R and B his influence on the game is legendary he paved the way for R Kelly, Usher and Chris Brown if you look up R Kelly in 1989-1990 his song Why You Wanna Play Me music video you clearly see he copied Bobby Brown’s who style and demeanor had the Gumby high top fade and all Usher himself even said in Bobby Brown’s A&E Biography documentary that in 1992 he met Bobby Brown on the Humpin Around Tour he had the Don’t Be Cruel cassette tape and literally said he was a huge fan of Bobby Brown and that Bobby had a huge impact and influence on him so with that being said outside of R Kelly Bobby Brown is the King of R and B

What you're saying has major merit but he goes before the category of r&b was even invented. Stevie would be the King of soul after the death of James Brown which is the parent of R&B. Titling Stevie as the King of that genre would actually be beneath him because he's so beyond that. His music birthed that genre as an original architect of the groundwork for it.

If you weren't alive in 1988-1989, you wouldn't understand. I was 19. Bobby Brown was that dude! The remix and Bobby albums were big too. He waited too long for the Don't Be Cruel follow up. He also should have reunited with Babyface for more tracks on the Bobby album. Babyface songs have more crossover appeal. Bobby wanted harder songs so he went with Teddy Riley for most of the album.

first, one must define what exactly R&B is to themselves…for me, Babyface supersedes R. Kelly as far as love songs are concerned…R. Kelly bridged that gap between Hip Hop & R&B just as Mary J. Blige did…what’s funny though is they both came out, pretty much, around the same time…Kelly evolved into what the people wanted while everyone else pretty much stayed the same…this is why his style and dress changed…great song writer but none of his artists are still relevant today…can’t say the same for Babyface
