"Beyond The Sea" by Bobby Darin. Darin began as a late 1950's pop rocker and migrated into the big band sound because of his admiration for Frank Sinatra's work. So, for more of that orchestra sound from Darin, listen to "Beyond The Sea."

Mac the Knife is a character from a play, THREE PENNY OPERA. This is why there is levity in the lyrics. It was designed to entertain people with the story. Similar to Jack the Ripper's story.

In a weekend visit to my college roommates family in Brooklyn, he introduced me to the jukebox legends Bobby Darin and Dion. My steady diet of hard rock had to make room for the 50s and early 60s stars that influenced all my rockstar heroes. So I have to say, I did learn something useful in my college days.

Darin was what they called at the time a Swinging Cat . Comically this was such a hit in the sixties , as kids we sang and danced around to this 😂 Ella did a cover ,actually many vocalists covered this version of Kurt Weil’s Three Penny Opera. His cover of UP a Lazy River is to me the best ever.

Bobby Darin started his career as a songwriter for "Connie Francis". He was a singer, musician & actor. He performed all styles of music such as jazz, pop, rock & roll, folk, swing, & country music. He had many hits from the late 50's-60's such as "Splish Splash", "Dream Lover", "Things", "You're The Reason I'm Living", "18 Yellow Roses", "If I Were A Carpenter" etc. Darin married actress Sandra Dee in 1960 whom he met while filming the movie "Come September". Darin suffered from poor health his entire life & died in 1973 at the age of only 37.

I grew up in the late 50s and early 60s, and I have a massive album collection starting from the late 50s and going through the late 70s. One of my prize albums is Bobby Darin's. "That's All," released in 1959 that contains this song and his hit "Beyond The Sea". On the back of the album is a copy of a telegram from Sammy Davis Jr. to Bobby Darin congratulating him on the release of his new album. The album is in new condition and sounds great and is a piece of history along with many of the others in my lifelong collection.

It's "black" comedy. This song was from the Three Penny Opera which I believe was originally in German if I'm not mistaken. Even as a little kid I loved the way this arrangement swings so hard. I used to go to a little place in Venice California called the Cafe 50's and they had a juke box with this song on it and whenever I would go there to eat even if it was in the middle of the night I would always play this song.

Written in 1928 by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. Louis Armstrong recorded a popular version in 1955, and the famous German singer Lotte Lenya - Kurt Weill's widow - was present in the studio at that recording, prompting Louis to add her name to the lyrics. Bobby used essentially the same arrangement as Louis, keeping the shout-out to Lenya as well in tribute.

I was in a production of The Threepenny Opera in college, and Weill used the names of the characters and the actors playing them in this song. Lotte Lenya, by the way, was not only in the original stage production in Germany, but later played a villain in the James Bond film From Russia With Love.

It's classic theater -- written by Kurt Weill (music) and Bertolt Brecht (lyrics) opened this in 1928 in Berlin -- from an 18th century London operetta called THE BEGGAR'S OPERA. He mentions the original Jenny in the 1928 cast, Lotte Lenya, a very famous German actress -- you might remember her as Kleb from the Bond pic FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, released a couple of years after this Ed Sullivan Show. It's very tongue in cheek -- the modern German piece was very consciously a work of Marxian critique of capitalist culture, but it had this one song that made Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, both of whom came to America when Hitler rose to power in 1933, very wealthy men. The irony is all so deep, you can cut it with a KNIFE. You two are so adorable and funny though -- Andre is such a pure and innocent soul and Domenica is such an old soul who has a deeper understanding of the darkness in every human heart and in the human condition. You do balance each other perfectly -- and very humorously -- reminds me very much of a Pisces-Scorpio or Neptune-Pluto interchange.

Fun fact. "Five will get you ten" refers to betting odds. He's saying we'll make a bet, and if he wins I will pay him 5, but if I win, he'll pay me 10. In other words 2:1 (2 to 1) odds. He's saying he's very sure of his position.

This is sung in the voice of the crime boss or someone high up in the game. His nonchalant and even jubilant sound is because he has a sense of entitlement, and he will be getting a large reward for his dubious deed. However he is basically "whistling past the graveyard".
