Bobby Fischer Changed his Mind about Women in Chess (1972)

In an earlier interview, former World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer said that women are terrible chess players, should be kept out of intellectual affairs and stay at home cleaning. In this interview from 1972, shortly before his World Championship against Boris Spassky, he seems to have changed his opinion somewhat.

Nobody is going to comment about Nona Gaprindashvili? She was the best female player and she was mentioned in the "Queen's gambit" as a woman player who never played against a man, which was a blatant lie. It's funny how a tv show that is supposed to be a pro-women has actually humiliated a real famous female chess player.

It think you miss the part that he say in the first video that "woman can't beat men in high elo" (change his word to simplify it) And in this video he said : "woman are welcome to play chess". These sentences aren't oppose since his statement is basically : woman can play chess but aren't good enough to be at the peak of chess ranking". Sadly for what you can say but history prove it since few woman manage to be in "high elo" but those woman aren't not even in the peak. But don't get me wrong these woman will destroy any average person but they aren't good enough to pretend to be the best chess player while those who can pretend for this title were only men.

@Saskaruto16 Жыл бұрын
@@taza257 Yes it is completely out of context. It popped up both as a meme and as some sort of showcase or branding that the best chess player, and through that chess and current chess players, are misogynistic. But that's not true. Bobby was very evidently just repeating what he had heard at the time and didn't have any of his own thoughts in the first interview. At age 19, only 1 year into being considered a legal adult (and we know how feeble that metric actually is) yeah he said some misogynistic shit in an interview. But you see interviews of him only a couple years later when he's seen some women do well in chess, which is basically all he cared about, and suddenly his tune has completely shifted to praising them and their abilities in chess. To then later go on to be one of the mentors for the greatest female player in history, even living with her and her family at one point. The views he expressed in the singular interview and it's being showcased now are completely absent of the context that this was not an accurate depiction of what Bobby thought about women and women in chess for the overwhelming majority of his life even just a couple years later. That's very important context given the ideas trying to be argued from that original interview broken up into clips all over KZbin, Twitter, etc.
