Robert Burger was the author of "The Chess of Bobby Fischer." This game was played at the Mechanics Institute Chess Room, 57 Post Street, San Francisco, which is the oldest continuously operating chess club in the USA. Burger, who was about a 2400 player, was drinking at a Harrington's, a local bar nearby. Ed Harrington, the bartender, goaded Bob into playing and bet him $20 he could not beat Fischer. Bob, who was a published wine expert and who loved his spirits, took the bet. He was well known at the club and caused a stir when he too his board. Ed and his entourage huddled behind Bob, and after his win, Burger raised his hand and Ed paid him off. In his aforementioned book, Bob would not feature his game and it's listed in a note anonymously. By the way, Bob himself told me this story.

Antonio, Bob played thousands of games in the Guico Pianissimo vs. his great friend and chess mentor Guthrie McClain. He was drunk when he played this game, so his preparation was just his experience. Fischer knew Bob because they had met when Bobby played at the 1957 US Junior Championship in San Francisco.

4:17 you get this position where it's equal material, obviously white is up the exchange, but the position is pretty much equal, black is up a pawn. I have never been more confused my entire life 💀😅

And he explains all this while hovering above and highlighting the knight
@wallysullivan931527 күн бұрын
Black has a knight and a pawn for a rook. He was actually slightly wrong there because knight + pawn is 4 points, a rook is 5. So technically white is up material, but its negligible.

This game is why top players demand that when they play simultaneous games that none of the players are really that good. For example, Kasparov was playing a simultaneous and he got upset when one of the players was rated above 2000, Such players have the ability to inflict embarrassing loses on the top players in simultaneous games as happened here.

My next puppy already has his name picked out. It will be Medo. He will have his own chess channel for dogs. Or maybe dogsledding. Or maybe just a culinary channel. We will let him choose. I was a homeless physics major during Covid. Life was hard hungry and almost unbearable. This random man and his dog and the resultant nightly games of chess in the park saved my life, gave me some dignity and internal peace. There was a handful of intellectual homeless fellas in my homeless camp. We couldn’t keep our dogs. It was hard. We considered Medo our surrogate dog at the time. It’s the little things that keep a man sane in desperate times. Antonio will never know this, nor does he need to, but I will always be greatly thankful.
