Lol Similar to Jari Kurri’s almost 1400 career points, mostly from playing across the ice from number 99. Big Bird was the perfect new first pass defensemen to feed Lafleur flying down the right side. Larry finished with a career +730 plus-minus, still the all-time record, partly off of Lafleur and Shutt’s scoring too.

Part of the beauty of the beatings was hearing announcers also refer to Maurice Richard, Yvan Couroyer, and Jean Beliveau. The French pronunciation just added to the mystique. Beliveau while much bigger (6’3”/205) was also an elegant great. “Le gross Bill” Beliveau’s name appears on the Stanley Cup 17 times, 10 as a player and 7 as an executive. Thanks for the article on Lefleur who was the Gretzky style player of the 1970s.

I was 8 when I became a Montreal Canadiens Fan in 1968 as Beliveau was 36 and was the Captain and leader of their 1960s DYNASTY (as well as being in his PRIME with the 1950s 5-straight Stanley Cup Canadiens) where they won 4 of 5 straight Stanley Cup Finals. The most exciting players were Lafleur, Perrault and Orr in 1975, and it was Beliveau (now in Management after he retired in 1971) that took Guy aside and encouraged him to be the Leader of the Team, and Guy was ready to accept the challenge. Most but not all what you said was accurate (as with the pronunciations of their names, like BELL-EEVO INSTEAD OF BELL-A-VOE ...AND PEE-AIR is closer to how PIERRE is pronounced...at least you sort of caught yourself or your VOCAL-AI TEXT READER....(giggle). I cannot speak much French either but I do know how the names are to be pronounced. Anyway I have 57 years of either watching or playing Hockey (as a Goalie in minor hockey and at college), and watched closely the 8 Stanley Cups in the 1968-1979 time frame and to a lesser degree the 1986 and 1993 Cups (tougher wins those last 2). Guy was HOT from late 1974 to 1980, and yes, that 1976-77 Team with the 60-8-12 record was a great team. Back then Sam Pollock made great trades to get #1 draft picks. I wish they also had a pre-draft pick of say French Canadien Players as a Team with Perrault and Dionne, and later Mike Bossy would have gained them even more Stanley Cups!

I was a big Habs fan back in the 70's and fondly remember watching big Jean Beliveau but i dont remember anyone named Jean Bayleevo or Morris Risher what team did they play for?
@rumcoke91232 күн бұрын
Lafleur was my favourite Habs player of all time followed by Robinson. Patrick Roy was a close third until he abandoned ship due to his massive ego.

Good video concepts, but absolutely terrible pronunciation of names that makes your videos seem less credible. On another note, the first pick in 1971 was always going to be a French Canadien ... either Lafleur or Marcel Dionne.

@2:48 it is sad that the Habs organisation never did this for any other Canadian super star afterward. Hence, the zero Cup since 1993.
@feelthebowes2 күн бұрын
I’d say that they kinda did that for Richer as well. He started slow too, then had two 50-goal seasons.
@dino.jay20073 күн бұрын
That wasn't Gerry Cheevers but Gilles Gilbert. 😂😂😂 Don Cherry laments that every day! But, Cheevers was injured so he had no choice but to go with Gilbert! 😂😂

Lafleur was not 5' 10". He was 6' tall.

Art & Sports merged, with Lafleur. Only Bobby Orr could match him in speed and grace on ice. Pele in soccer, Michael Jordan in basketball, did similar things in their sports.

Guy lafluer was the greatest skater and What'a slap shut no pun intended 😅 all of a sudden the french Canadian hockey stars disappeared? I miss them.

Lafleur’s game-tying goal in 1979 came against Gilles Gilbert and not Gerry Cheevers.

29 goals rookie season.. " Trade this guy, he's terrible!" lol. man.. fans were cut throat. I do love seeing these clips and the goalies seemingly giving up on anything low glove side though..

Just 29 goal. A kind of dream for Saku Koivu 😅
@NhlHeroOfficial2 күн бұрын
Man, Saku would've probably done a triple fist pump celebration if he ever hit 29 in a season! Our beloved Habs captain was more of a playmaker extraordinaire - topped out at 21 goals but had those silky smooth assists for days. Still, he's forever a Montreal legend for so many other reasons. Heart and soul doesn't always show up in the goal column! 😄

So many inaccuracies in this video, and I do not mean the mispronunciations. Side Note: The hat waving at 9:46 was the night they retired LaFleur's #10 at the Forum February, 16, 1985. I was at that game in Montreal, have the hat, and got him to autograph it the next night in Buffalo after the home and home against the Sabres, who's Coach then was Scotty Bowman, as they honored him as well.

Since we're talking about inaccuracies, let's address your misspelling of Guy Lafleur's name...

You play with superior skill and speed when you have more of it than your opponent. Teams resort to toughness when the opponent has as much as or more skill and speed. The most lumbering, cement-headed NHL players with cement hands skate circles around most ECHL and below players with grace and finesse. By the way, the first French-Canadian taken first overall in the NHL draft was Gilbert Perreault in 1971. Philadelphia used brutality to fill the bottom 6 because the talent pool was limited. Te NHL had less than a dozen Swedes, the U.S. didn't produce many pro calibre players at the time and Russian players were not available. Even worse, the WHA was competing for players.

Lafleur. La fleur. It’s French for the flower. Hence the name.
