He is doing an impression of Boris Karloff who was the Frankenstein monster and other horror films. And that is Dick Clark. Forever young. Host of American Bandstand, the show you are watching.

He's impersonating Boris Karloff, one of the masters of ghouls.

In 1973, this song was released again and hit #1 for a second time. When they tracked Bobby down to give him his $10,000 dollar royalty check, they found him in New York City driving a cab!

He's doing a Boris Karloff impression I believe later on in life he did a spoof of this doing the Monster Mash rap

Yes indeed. 1984 monster rap, AKA Shock the Body. The first time I heard it I was in awe of the fact that he had actually done a sequel that many years later. It wasn't a spoof, it was a literal sequel. Not to be confused with the earlier sequels and expanded story that he did in his album from the 60s.

He is imitating someone who is famous for horror movies: Boris Karloff. I thought at the end he was imitating Frankenstein's monster since he had his arms stick straight out. Plus Karloff played that role starting in the 1930's.

hi dereck! Thank you for reacting to this blast from my childhood! You brought back some wonderful memories. I will write some insight into what is going on in this song. Bobby Pickett is doing 3 voices in this song. Now i should mention that- for my generation- we recognize these voices instantly since these classic monsters were ubiquitous in popular culture of the 50s, 60s and 70s.....even down to cereals (Frankenberry and Count Chocula...lol). The main voice he is doing is of Boris Karloff, as many of your viewers have observed already. And he is the actor who made the "Square-Head" Frankenstein's monster a legend- but because his voice is so recognizable, Bobby Pickett decided to sing the whole song in that voice. So you have to imagine that the person singing is Dr.Frankenstein, not the monster he created- even though Bobby Pickett is impersonating the voice of the actor that played the monster. And so Dr. Frankenstein sings that- the moment he created the monster, it started to dance, and so he called that dance "The Monster Mash", and it became the "hit of the land".....But towards the end, he does one line where he becomes Bela Lugosi. Bela Lugosi is the actor who made Dracula legendary (when he was very old, he was the vampire in "Plan 9 from Outer Space"), but anyway, where Bobby Pickett sings "Whatever happened to my Transylvanian Twist", there he is impersonating Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula. Then at the end, when he makes all the weird faces and saying "Mash good, mash good", he is doing the voice of Dwight Frye who played "Fritz", but we know him as "Igor", who is the servant of Dr.Frankenstein in all the movies- the hunchback who steals the brain for Dr. Frankenstein. So you have to imagine that- in this song, Dr. Frankenstein has a new song, goes on a tv show and it blows the old song (Dracula's song) off the charts. Then all the monsters of the monster-universe show up and everyone has a dance party and they are all happy and friends. When Bobby sings, "and the local group, The Crypt-Kicker 5", he is referring to "The Dave Clark 5".......happy halloween everyone. A wonderful addition to your channel....Thanks again Dereck

Yes! Been a favourite of mine ever since I heard it on Disney's "DTV Monster Hits", a Halloween special in 1987, where it accompanied old black-and-white Mickey Mouse cartoons. Such a catchy ditty.

"Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon is a great one from the 70s. Dick Clark was the host of American Bandstand, a show which showcased the days top pop hits with couples dancing, dance contests, guest artists and a bit called "Rate-A-Record" where a couple would come to the stage and listen to the latest records and rate them. It's also where the phrase "It's got a good beat and is easy to dance to" was coined. Total Americana where Dick Clark was the world's oldest teenager.

There's a very poppy punk/pop classic called "Island of Zombie Women" that's both hilarious and has been done by several bands, pretty much all versions are good.
