In this episode I give the key details on how to get Jeff Lynne's drum sound and talk about the snare sound Jeff Lynne hated.

A big Jeff Lynne fan here...found you on the elodiscovery website. I'm also a fan of all things Finn bros(have the Imaginary Kingdom cd) and just a fan of music in general so you hit the trifecta for me. Thank you for these videos and keep up the good work Bobby! Dan

Sylvia Massey mics drum playback to get a room sound on drums recorded in small rooms. Sounds like she probably knew of this too. Lol Thanks for sharing these videos. Easy among the most legit content anywhere. Who would imagine we could learn from successful producers like you and Warren and Marc Nelson, etc etc.

Really enjoy your content... could you please replicate the snare from Robin Trower's track For The Earth Below...50 odd years later I'm stil blown away by the snare on that track.

Cool video! There’s some re-amping for ya! “Snare Buzz” is a free plugin by Wavesfactory, that does something like this. I have used it in a pinch where I have had to mix drums without a snare bottom. Highly recommend. Also, Dr. Bob, have you ever triggered a virtual instrument bottom snare off your real recorded top mic like you do with the room sounds?
@BobbyHuff3 жыл бұрын
No I haven’t but that’s a great idea!! They do all seem to have similar tensions though....You’re smarter than I thought... haha
@LCOmusic3 жыл бұрын
Great tip on the snare buzz plugin, thanks for that! Reminds me of an old trick I used a few times to add a simple 808-style sub-bass tone to kick drums before I started using sample triggers: send a copy of your drum to an aux buss, put a tone generator on another track and run that generator through a gate set up with the sidechain keyed to that aux buss. Tune threshold etc to taste depending on the desired effect. A simple pink noise generator in such a setup would do nicely for adding buzz to snares, especially in synth band settings as a simple artificial noise tone will give an acoustic snare something of a hybrid TR-909 drum machine feeling.

I've read that Mr. Mister did something similar to this on Kyrie except in that case the drum parts were all programmed on a drum machine and they were looking for a more realistic drum sound.

The last few videos did not pop up in my sub box. What a bummer. These snare videos are super cool though! I’m not a drummer so it’s kinda something I neglect to think about whereas I’ll spend a lot more time on guitar setups and vocal mics than I should on drums.
@BobbyHuff3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Don’t know why they didn’t pop up. Did u ring the bell? Yeah glad ur getting some snare info that you feel is helpful. They do hit twice a measure in most songs so it’s very important to have them sounding killer.

Excellent. I love these videos; thanks Dr. Bob. I started my self-education in recording tech back in the tape days but only got 'serious' about it (Ha ha) in the digital world. I love the flexibility of Pro Tools etc... but sorry I missed out on exploring all the gymnastics required to get the results that can now be acheived by a couple of keystrokes. But knowing history is important. I mean where would we be if we didn't know about the Napoleonic wars?

@@diazartmovement to get the sizzle on the snare drum that Jeff Lynne hated you need to mic the underneath side of the snare drum to get the snare “snap.” Did I answer this correctly Diaz?

@@BobbyHuff I was thinking like if you were gonna play live and you wanted that jeff lynne snare sound
@BobbyHuff3 жыл бұрын
@@diazartmovement oh I see!!! I think u would have to trigger a Jeff Lynne type sample from your snare. I’ve seen him live and it’s not the Jeff Lynne snare sound live. NO DISRESPECT to him in that regard because the show is amazing but a lot of that snare sound is the “boxiness,” of the room that he’s playing the snare in. It would also be possible to have a small room reverb dedicated to your snare in a live Performance. Sorry it took me a couple tries to answer your question. Ha ha
