The story behind "Black Hole" is interesting (as told by Akane). Kanami asked her how fast she can drum, Akane replied around 190bpm. So Kanami wrote "Black Hole" that peaks at 220bpm! Akane went and wrote some drum patterns for the song (she actually music score's them) which she labelled 1) Easy 2) Comfortable 3) Normal 4) Possible if I work hard 5) Tough 6) Painful 7) Hell She said of course the band chose "Hell"!

Not many bands can genuinely can sound so natural playing both of these songs and no other band can write both of these songs and pull them off. Their musical diversity is closer to that of Queen or Rush than any of their contemporaries who stick to one, maybe two sounds. You've only done 4 songs so far; you've only scratched the surface. While you'll find some similar songs in their 100+ catalogue of recorded tracks, but you'll never find a song that represents the majority of their work. They've made every combination of hard rock, metal, punk and pop possible. My suggestion for your next Maid track is Blooming, or Endless Story... or Memorable...

As brilliant as all the Maids are, 'The Barefoot Assassin' owns both those songs on the bass. Not just when she's highlighted, but throughout the whole of both songs. The other thing I really love is the absolute look of concentration on Miku's face making sure she gets those complex rhythms on the guitar, and the harmonising backing vocals. Especially in 'Black Hole'. She's not her usual cheerful bubbly self in these songs. Makes me love her just that little bit more.

So I think the whole purpose of Black Hole, musically at least but lyrically too is descending into a Black Hole. If you listen to it with that in mind you really get the feel of what that might be like. Chaotic, uncomfortable but somehow, and I could reading to much into it but complete is the word I would use. Only because this song is that. You have to listen to it several times at least but it's a journey into chaos maybe but there's a sense of expectation and then finality or something like that to it. I'm not smart enough to define it exactly, but that's the way it feels.

The brass is in the Backing Tracks. BAND-MAID have always strived to get as close to the album version LIVE as possible. So any Keyboards, Synths or Sound Effects, unless it's a Gong or Doubled Vocals, are played by Kanami. That can play without them. The airline once lost their luggage, but they were more concerned about the sneakers they bought in L.A. than the computer. They just changed up the Set List and the show went on. If you watch 'Domination' LIVE you'll see a little game they play with Akane, gathering around her and making funny faces at her during the hard part to make her laugh and throw her off. Not a chance! Her nickname isn't The Beast for nothing. Once she's locked into the Backing Tracks she is a machine! BTW, it's not Saki. Saiki is pronounced like Psyche (Sigh-Key).

As others have stated, it's a backing track. Used to add accents in many of their songs, usually done by Kanami on a synth. But in this case could have also been Akane or MISA. Both played horns for a while. Any keyboard is probably Kanami, piano is her first instrument. But both Akane and MISA could also manage.
@bobcieslinski

Thanks Savid for thr info ! I knew someone triggered it and I was betting on Akane.
@greylocke100
@greylocke100 Жыл бұрын
@@bobcieslinski In the past Akane was the one who ran the tracks and triggers. Since they now have an actual staff they have a tech do that for them to offload it from Akane. She does have a few triggers on her kit though. I know one of them is set to trigger the computer that runs their tracks and the click. A few years ago she had other triggers for effects or lights, but as far as I know now, Akane only has two triggers on her kit now. And Kanami, Akane, and MISA all use either a keyboard or a piano for writing. MISA in an interview from last year said she used a "Keyboard" to write all of her bass lines, for the Unleashed! EP. She said she didn't want to unconsciously fall into a habit or reuse a lick she knew, so she forced herself to write them on a keyboard. MISA in addition to the bass also plays guitar, Alto Horn, Trumpet and the piano. Akane plays trumpet and piano and is learning both bass guitar and guitar. Saiki has been learning to play piano and guitar for about 3.5 years now. Miku is the outlier only playing guitar, but she is also the band's PR person and according to the other 4 Ladies, is CONSTANTLY busy doing promotion work for the band, writing lyrics, and dealing with both the record company and management so the other Ladies don't HAVE to. Kanami though has been playing piano for over 26 years and besides that and guitar can play bass guitar, and is a decent drummer.

Great reaction and analysis Bob. I remember when Manners was first released I felt it had such a great groove to it. I also like the addition of Miku’s vocal bits, especially the “yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah” ala Beatles lol.😊 Akane and Misu were friends at their music school so I’m sure it has helped them be so locked into each other. Black Hole is such an interesting composition and it shows Kanami’s brilliance. It’s a song that definitely left the Band-Maid world a bit divided. Generally speaking, and I mean really generally, it was non-musicians that didn’t like it that much, although many came around as they listened to it more. It was really well trained musicians that fell in love with it from the get go. There are so many, I’ll use the word again, brilliant compositional techniques used by Kanami. Starting the song with Miku with a 12/8 pattern and bringing in the rest of the band with a 4/4 time but at double the speed. The layering you spoke of, which is a favourite technique of mine and I also employ reverse layering, sure lets the listener breath for a moment. And Akane going at light speed into the Black Hole. I like to refer to this song as the musical equivalent of “In Your Face!” 😅😊

Thanks for reacting to Band-Maid again as I really enjoy so many things you point out, all of which just increase my appreciation - and adoration! - of these highly skilled ladies. You're only the second reactor I've ever seen that noticed the trumpets! (JbfGuitar was the other) I think that it is Akane who puts in any little extras like that, from the machines next to her drum set, but it may be added offstage as I can't work out how she could do it while playing those drums so precisely. But they're not put in at post production of the concert audio, as they always do it all live! What I do know is that they record any extras themselves and they all form part of Kanami's original score. The 220 BPM controlled chaos finale of BLACK HOLE is ridiculously precise and excellent...as is the whole song, now I think about it, just a tad slower (180 BPM!).

Great review, you’re spot on. This live version of Manners is fantastic, better than the studio version/version. Black Hole, while a bit overwhelming for the mind, is an amazing musical assault on the senses. In a band interview, Akane said this was her most challenging drum part to play. All the maids slay in Black Hole.

Can't get away from these two songs . I suppose musicians hate to hear of favourites that never get overtaken by their more recent works?-----but it just can;t be helped----perhaps,just perhaps, ...............Manners and Black Hole can NEVER be overtaken by any newer work ? !! That still won't stop them turning out their wonderful sounds ,----but it's hard to imagine anything right up at this level ! Anyway, far from putting me off tasting any newer and future works , this just plain inspires me ! An impossibly high bar, perhaps----but one that they will still hang masterpieces from !!

Try listening to Manners MV- they studio one sounds a lot better imo :) And yes- Akane triggers the tracks - you sometimes see in songs this hittable computer screen type thingy on her left side. p.s Just in case you didnt know manners and blackhole are 2 different songs from the same album :) This was performed online as part of some musicians support initiative during covid lockdown- bands would do a 10 min slot in the online show and get a chunk of money to help support them when nobody could do conserts. So BM needed to do 2 songs to make up the time. They also did several of their own online conserts for fans who could buy digital tickets from their website during lockdown- and even wrote some songs for the fans about missing them! BM are my fav band- they are amazing - so hope you do more :) They have Loads of songs all amazing- and with a big variety of song too! Just always try to react to either the MV or the official live - not some new dodgey audio fan cam :) I will recommend Warning MV, Daydreaming MV, and No God official live (for amazing bass work) Or the MV for one of their newest- the amazing instrumental 'From now on'

@@DaElfer She didn't use the trigger pad after I think February 2021 the Budokan replacement on line concert. I can't remember the one where they had the technical issues with the tracks. I THINK it was that one. But part of the problem might have been the trigger interface and just how hard Akane actually hits. I know in all of the fancams and behind the scene photos from their US tour last year the only trigger pad I saw was the foot trigger behind her left foot with the 2 buttons on it that she has been using since Studio Coast and Zepp to Start/Stop the click and the backing track. All other trigger pads were gone from her kit.

Another great reaction, aligato! I would like to draw your attention to two songs which they produced under the name "Band Maiko" (= Geisha apprentice) in Kyoto. They all wear kimonos and we see traditional instruments like the shamisen, Jap. drums, etc.: The titles of the MVs are "Secret Maiko Lips" -kzbin.info/www/bejne/hH-reHR4rNKYa5I - and "Gion-cho" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/q562pWqlgrqAmdU . Both MVs are very colourful and show the arts and techniques the maikos had to learn. For both MVs exist making-of videos. We see e.g. how Akane had to train climbing a steep stairway in her traditional wooden "high-heels" desperately trying not to fall and learn how many crew member had to help Saiki to enter a ricksha which then drove her through a bamboo wood. Funny and very educative.

The maids always deliver. Akane, MISA, and Kanamincho could be an incredible instrumental trio if they wanted. Speaking of which, I would like to recommend one of my newer discoveries because I'd love to hear your interpretation on them. They're called Paranoid Void, and the song is called "Null." The video I'm linking is a live one take session. The drummer Mipow reminds me of Vlad from Jinjer, the bass guitarist Yu-ki reminds me of MISA, and the guitarist reminds me of David Gilmour around the "Meddle" era of Pink Floyd. Blackhole took me ages to get my head around. It is so disjointed, unmelodic and (thematically) fractured. The virtuosity of the band members kept me coming back to it. I do wonder if the song borrows heavily on Japanese/Chinese melodic structures - where dissimilar notes & chords frequently are used in the same passage.
