Lyrics:
They say every man must need protection
They say every man must fall
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Some place so high above the wall
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released
Down here next to me in this lonely crowd
Is a man who swears he's not to blame
All day long I hear him cry so loud
Calling out that he's been framed
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

Always loved this song... When I was incarcerated at Arizona State Prison in Douglas, I had Jerry Garcia Band live album which included Jerry Garcia singing "I Shall Be Released". Now in Az, in the 90s, they basically never granted one's first parole, with their war on drugs (war on cannabis mostly) in full swing. I listened to the tapes daily. I played that song repeatedly on the day of my parole board hearing (for attempted transportation of cannabis) . I sang it. "... all day long U hear him crying out so loud, crying out that he'd been framed.... Any day now, any day now, I shall be released". I made my first parole, to return home to Indiana. In the 3 years I was there, I never saw anyone make their first parole. When I returned to Indiana, I went to the banks of the WhiteRiver, at midnight, I gave thanks to the GreatSpirit, I lit a white candle & an incense, & I sang that song to my creator & gave thanks. Music is magic.... & Bob Dylan is a Master.

I'm happy for you for surviving such a god awful experience and getting out and being able to put it behind you. Many years ago I had the misfortune of being in the same shoes for the same thing. A major difference however was the fact I was 6000 miles from home in Okinawa prefecture, empire of Japan. There have never been words that could describe the utter despair and inescapable sense of loneliness that I felt that day when I was sentenced to 2 years at "forced labor". That place was a windowless 19th century dungeon.

@@evanmorrow1234 Evan, you don't have to be sorry. I personally love rice, in fact while you were sending me this message I was cooking and then greatly enjoying some. When I was in Orleans Paris prison in New Orleans they used to serve bologna sandwiches on cheap white bread, and to fuck with us they would let the sandwiches sit out for hours until the meat started to sweat into the bread as it went stale. Never really been able to fuck with bologna or wonderbread ever since

I read the comment below and it is exact to my great awakening.I wondered what my brothers saw in this guy, put on the record. Maybe 10 seconds listening to the beginning of each song. I don't know how many I went through and I was 12 at this time in 1977. I was not expecting what did happen.I put on MY BACK PAGES and the voice went right thru me. I remember declaring out loud, "I love this song!) from hearing it in the house so often. Now I don't blame anyone if they don't believe me, but I know it's true so I shall tell my truth. It was the first of only 2 times in my life I heard a voice like someone sitting beside me. It said, "Your life will never be the same" It was female. Slowly I fell under Dylan's spell and my brother would get me an album for my birthday and Christmas, trying to teach me. I saw him at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1978 and I was ecstatic for 2 days ahead of time. I quickly outgrew my bro's knowlege of Dylan and have spent alot of time listening to him. And it just gets better with every listen.

While this song explains a lot about people in prison, what i really love about this song is how metaphorical it is, it is about every place or situation that we don't want to be in and how we are hoping that any/some day we will be released from it.

A deep & provocative insight, versed in such a beautiful metaphor... profound & poetically sculpted with such skill. As diverse as we may be, like admirers of a flower in a garden, perhaps we gaze at the flower from different angles/perspectives, we may relate to the flower differently in our personal contexts, but still, at its base, beauty is beauty from whichever direction one may gaze. Art joins us, music harmonizes our frequencies & so often transcends our differences & unites us. It's a beautiful song, the literal impetus for 2 strangers to share appreciation & gratitude for this gift of music. God Bless U my friend! Namaste🙏🕊🙏

"The next one, "I Shall Be Released," immediately caught the right spirit and we relaxed into the music. We started the song with a slightly more bouncy feel than I had heard on the Band's famous recording of the song, and it fit right into the bluesy fingerpicking style that I have always favored. Bob played it in A, so I capoed up to the fifth fret and played out of the E position, accenting the ends of lines with bass note hammer-ons and sliding 6ths and pull-offs in the treble. I joined in singing on the chorus, and before I knew it Bob was grinning and we were on to the next song. Now I was starting to have a good time!" - Happy Traum

That Song was always my favorite one of yours, until I heard Pressing On! I knew you'd come through Bob Dylan! Have you ever recorded the old song called: The Sunny Side Of The Street? I once played the harmonica in which I tried it for a couple of years when I was a teenager, and my grandpa on my mom's side taught me, but I gave it up because it was too much blowing in and out and spit back and forth. Ha! I guess I did it wrong. I once played the piano too when I was a kid, and my dad got us lessons. I played in a couple of recital performances, but I don't think my dad liked my choice of music when I chose the one' If it takes forever, t will wait for you; and that's probably because he knew that I chose that music because of my mother. My big sis played the guitar, but I didn't like to because my fingers kept getting blisters. Thanks for signing this song. Victoria
