My Big Train Adventure Part 1, Featuring The Ocean - Halifax to Montreal with VIA Rail

In October 2022 I embarked on a journey by train across the North American continent, covering the entire width of mainland Canada and the equivalent of the width of the United States.
After a flight from my adopted home of Newfoundland, my train odyssey began with the overnight Halifax to Montreal Via Rail train, “The Ocean”. I followed that with the Montreal to Toronto train and a flight to Chicago where I boarded the historic California Zephyr. That train took me to Emeryville (across the bay from San Francisco) and passed through the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada. After a couple of days in San Francisco I took Amtrak’s Coast Starlight to Seattle and then the Cascades to Vancouver. Then I took my longest train ride on Via Rail’s Canadian, a four-night trip across to Toronto. I passed back through the Rockies and then across the prairies and Northern Ontario.

Was just wondering if the cannon blast they do at noon every day made you jump, when I first moved there it made me jump because did not know about it

I was at the train station at that time, so never heard the cannon.

@@bobinpouchcove what a shame, yeah the first time it scared me half to death because of not knowing about it and then once when I was at that Scotiabank Arena, across from the hill, I forgot to pay attention to the time and was outside polluting myself and had my back to the hill and the cannon goes off and I almost tossed my phone because it got me again. Hope you enjoyed your time in Halifax, did you happen to get a chance to go on the Harbour Hopper? I have taken the Ocean a number of times in a cabin.

Somewhat disappointing. When I saw the route I was prepared for a full and detailed explanation of the train, accommodations, meals, etc and what we were seeing along the route. None of that was present and the glimpses of things were so fast that it was not possible to get a feel for what was what!!

Why is there a can of WD-40 next to your pizza?

That is great that someone finally asked. I had just bought the WD-40 to use back in my hotel room to fix the wheels on my little suitcase. The wheels had rusted over the many months when the bag sat unused in the garage during Covid. I had the can in my hand as I walked into the restaurant and wanted to keep it in front of me so that I would not forget it at the end of the meal.
