Eddie 'Big Town Playboy' Taylor - TV gig France 1970 with the Aces … Eddie did a gig for me in Liverpool a couple of years later. This is the only clip I have of him. Anybody out there got anything?

Watching Eddie Taylor playing his Gibson ES-335 guitar, is like watching a musician who had TOTAL command of the fretboard!

It's not a 335 but a 355. But I agree with you. I never met Eddie, but somehow like to think of him as my mentor when it comes to blues guitar.

I saw him a couple of years after this in Glasgow, maybe the same time he was in Liverpool. It was one of the shows with several artists - Doctor Ross, Big John Wrencher, Boogie Woogie Red and Eddie T. He played solo and was very good. I would have loved to have seen him with a great band like this. Great singer, great guitar player.

Hi Hugh - I seem to remember the name - was he a photographer? Any chance you could scan your booklet and let me see it? BTW I also booked a couple more blues artists including: Lightnin' Slim; Whispering Smith; Chicago pianists Erwin Helfer amd Blind John Davis; Gene 'Mighty Flea' Connors (who I actually played with a couple of times years later when he lived in Germany) etc.

@hughcameron 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, Yes he photographed and followed the Big Bear tour. It is called "Travelling with the Blues" (A photographical survey) : Blues-Gospel Research Library Publication No 1 I'd be glad to scan it for you. Give me your address and I'll scan it and send a copy to you. I saw Lightnin' and Whispering Smith too. Lightning Slim was a real star. I can still see him in flared trousers, big tulip lappelled jacket and cap all in matching tweed!

Five giants of the blues, all gone too soon. I never heard Eddie play that super-fast riff before!,(or since). The first time he played it here, the camera wasn't on either fingerboard, so I thought it must've been Louis.

While I respect the 70's-era Muddy Waters Band for calling themselves "The Legendary Blues Band," IMHO The ACES are the TRUE legendary Blues band. How can you beat Louis and Dave Myers and Fred Below? And here they're backing Eddie Taylor, who was THE guitar man for Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Walter Horton, and so many more.

Diatton BluesHi - You're right of course! ... But the French TV companies put these titles on and there are one or two errors in nearly every broadcast... you've got to remember though that English is not their language so I think it's easy to see why this would happen... I thought I'd just leave them the way they were. I'm just glad (as I'm sure you must be) that we have these recordings. Incidentally I had a club in Liverpool during the mid-70's and I booked Eddie Taylor on one occassion - he was amazing!!

There's another version of this same song available, apparently from the same festival. Louis takes a strong solo on that one (Eddie calls out his name, so you know it's him). He also calls out, "Okay, Mr. Sykes" before the piano solo. If this works, it can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmK7Y3Wmf7Z9btE (Also -- Why is the title of this song always transcribed as "Rockin' 83 Highway" or "Rock On 83 Highway," when it's obviously "Wreck On 83 Highway"? )
