Sorry to be pedantic, but a couple of minor corrections to commentary and comments here. The Austerity tanks were designed and built not for industry but specifically for the army in the run-up to the Normandy Invasion when millions of tons of heavy ordnance needed to be marshalled in goods yards and military camps along the South Coast. They were intended to do short hauls and shunting, moving very heavy loads at low speeds - the design brief specified that they be able to shift 1,100 tons on the flat, not bad for a loco weighing 48 tons all up. They had a projected life of only five years. They began to appear in late 1943 or 1944 - the loco of which I am part-owner, HE3193 "Norfolk Regiment", was built in 1944. After the war almost all were sold into industrial use, mainly NCB. The LNER bought some, made very minor modifications and called them J94. They continued to be built for industrial use until (I think) 1968. There are about 70 still in existence. Being robust, simple and powerful they are ideal for preserved railways which don't require high speeds. They're not very romantic but all in all they were outstandingly successful: the Industrial Railway Record describes them as "... one of the classic designs in locomotive history ...". There, lecture over!

First one rolled out in 1943, last one 1964. Worked until 1984. The design was based on the earlier Hunslet 50550 class and the earlier 18inch hunslet design. They came about as you say due to the need for a shunting locomotive during the war. The LMS 3F Jinty was originally chosen by Robert Riddles until hunslet came forward with plans for the austerity class claiming it to be more robust, more power, simpler and yet more efficient than the 3F..... in the end 485 were built by various companies including Hunslet, Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn, Andrew Barclay, Vulcan Foundry, Hudswell Clarke and W.G. Bagnall. It’s thanks to the WD and the NCB and the invaluable use to most heritage railways why they are now the most numerous class of engine preserved in the UK Today.

They're technically J94 class if they were ones purchased by the LNER, the majority were WD owned and known as austerity tanks due to being a design by hunslet for the wd, to a material and cost saving design for war usage. A lot ended up in industrial and NCB usage after the war as well as the LNER buying some.

I’m sure they were built before 1945 as they were built for quarries and colleries during the war but because of slow production the plans for the loco were shared with bagnall Lesley and hawthorn Robert Stevenson and some other companies, also the some of the locos were bought by the lner who classified them as j94 with there more common name being austerities and the last austerity to run in a colliery was in service up until 1984!

One difference that’s worth mentioning is that the DJ Models version has NEM sockets where as the Hornby version doesn’t making it tricky to install Kadee couplings, ps I also have two of those three Austerity Locomotives and look to get one of the re-numbered to 152.

Glad you've done this. I was wondering if the new models were actually any improvement on the old ones. Is the motor any smoother at all or are they badically the same? Dj one must be smaller as it doesn't take up as much space under the boiler as the Hornby offering. Seems to me that the best option is buy the Hornby one and detail it yourself. Saving money and ensuring all details are then correct. Guarantee there will be errors on the DJ models loco (no model is perfect) so stick to the old school method of buy it, take it apart and make it right. That said, the DJ ones do look good so I can see the appeal in buying them.

I have a Hunslet 0-6-0 Austerity in Cadley Hill colliery livery and it's called Cadley Hill No.1 and I plan on getting another and naming it Cadley Hill No.2 and I also plan getting 6 in total and they will Renamed Cadley Hill No.3 Cadley Hill No.4 Cadley Hill No.5 Cadley Hill No.6 so I will have 6 and then I am also going to get a 0-6-0 peckett "Sherwood" and an 0-4-0 Peckett called "DODO" and my Future Layout is going to be called Battlefield Light Military Railway and in one corner of the Layout on the outside of the Fiddleyard is Cadley Hill colliery and now the Hunslets will leave Colliery and pull passenger trains up and down the Main Layout and bring empty wagons from a siding back to the Colliery and then take the Full mineral wagons back to the siding and the two Pecketts mainly run on the Main Layout but will sometimes help move full wagons out of the colliery to the sidings and bring the empty wagons into the colliery and I am also going to get two 28xx 2-8-0 locomotives No. 2807 and 2817 and they will pull my Large Rake of Mineral wagons and sometimes they will pull a rake of Great western railway coaches and I am going to have three fiddleyards two Fairly large ones and one small one the small fiddleyard will house my Fleet of diesel locomotives and one of the larger fiddleyards will house my Fleet of Steam Locomotives and the other Large Fiddleyards will house my Fairly Large Rake of Coaches and Wagons and I am also going to have a Small 009 Layout Which will run parallel in some parts of Layout alongside my 00 gauge Layout if that made any sense to you. Cheers. Lewis : )
