Bob Ross is my God. His brushes and paint hold the content of the universe, and his hand paints reality. When he died, there was no heaven, not until he painted it. When you die, he will welcome you onto his next canvas as happy little dooder in true heaven. Come to The Church of Bob and Everything Ross to pray and support the truth that is seldom known amongst mankind.

This aired on my birthday in 1991! I’ve always loved Bob Ross but only recently realized he was always subtly sharing words of wisdom like @15:45 - “And in your world, you decide where you want your little path to be.” “When you’re doing this, don’t just try to copy. Do what you wanna do. Art, painting, should be very individual. We all see nature through different eyes and you should paint what you see, not what someone else tells you is right or wrong. Paint what you want.” @21:46

I remember one time when i was in art class in the 2nd Grade, we were painting a mountainside. I wanted to have fun and experiment with different ways to make clouds. I asked my teacher if i could use some white paint. She got so upset with me and pulled me outside and told me that i will do it how everyone else does it. This is one of the things that i never understood about school art classes, they don't tell you to experiment, they make you do everything their way and i have always been unhappy with it.

loveoflrthal123: I wish you had been in my art classes. I taught in two intermediate and high schools in two different towns. I taught my INTERMEDIATE students to use the media (paint, paper, colored chalk, pencils, etc.) then gave them the subject for the day and let them draw it in their own style. There was NO right or wrong way and there were no tests. I just wanted them to feel un-judged. This lengthy post is for those who had bad experiences with art classes and who had a control-freak of a "teacher" who had no inkling of what art is all about. There were a very few of those miserable human beings in my life and they shouldn't have been exposed to kids at all. I called them tight-minded. Art is supposed to be a person's free expression using imagination and art supplies. Constrictions and rules should not apply. At times, when the weather was nice, we all went outside and sat on the school lawn and drew leaves or sticks or dead bugs and they could portray them any way they wanted to. All I said was to look at the lines and oddities of the subject and draw all the little creases and veins and feelers and bug-eyes. Some kids were more talented than others and they might go on to choose a career in art, just as some are better at sports or singing. I didn't expect students in Intermediate age to be instant fine artists. That's what advanced classes and college was for if they decided to go further. Art is free expression and is whatever comes out of the imagination of the "artist". In my opinion, and in my teaching, I always let my students draw in their own style. We didn't do monsters or hot cars or science fiction, because they could do that at home, but I encouraged them to learn how to use the art supplies, to actually LOOK at things and just enjoy letting their imaginations roam. Sometimes we played music in class. This was during the Beatles, the Mamas and the Papas, Jimmie Hendrix, Beachboys. We kept the music low, but it was a good background for creativity. I let them bring their own recordings of favorites, but we had to omit some of the choices, as you might imagine! I gave them the freedom to use their own skills or lack of skills, learn to use the media: pens, pencils, paper, paint, colored pens, color books, cut-paper "sculpture" (sometimes called Origami). As I said, I wish you could have been in my art classes. I can give you some idea now of what it was like in my classes: Just for fun, get some colored construction paper, some colored chalk and using an entire sheet of paper for one subject, just draw anything, (people, pets, your phone). You can gather one or more pieces of chalk in your hand and make multiple lines. The colors are beautiful and the project is messy. So what! It's fun. Another project is to get a piece of paper and draw your other hand that's holding the paper. Watch those creases and fingerprint sworls and how your fingernails connect with your fingers. It doesn't have to look like a hand at all. It's YOUR art and it's your business...and it's YOUR hand! Another fun project is to hold your paper still with one hand or a paper weight, place your pen or pencil on the paper, look at something at a distance (a person, a window, etc.) and start drawing what you see. Don't look down until you feel you've feel it's finished. These are called "Contour Drawings", and they are very weird and usually funny, but you'll see a lot of lines that look like the real thing. The lines will overlap, but it 's great for you or your children do maybe on a rainy day. There are all kinds of artists: anyone who wants to draw CAN draw and it doesn't have to look perfect. Even Bob Ross uses the brush bristles to make impressions of leaves and grass. They look like leaves and grass, but when you look closely, they aren't perfect replications of the real thing. There's a lot of different ways to teach art. We also studied art history and the different styles of he Old Masters. This isn't the space to go into that, but it's very interesting. You can do that on-line if you want. Don't let anyone tell you that your art is "bad"! It may not look "real", but it's your creation, and you should save it for yourself. Happy drawing. Post here if you try it. :0) DBB

Corrections From Donna B. in above post: I need to correct a couple of mis-spelled words above so you won't think I'm illiterate: (paragraph just above beginning with "There are all kinds of artists:...) Bob’s father was a hunter per Bob himself in one of the episodes. He also said that he doesn’t disapprove of hunting as long if it was ethical and within reason. Hunting in the woods is peaceful for sure, or a hiking or fishing. Even if you don’t see a deer, turkey or hog, it’s the experience that matters. Watching Bob paint his paintings remind me of those times in the woods.

I've always kind of liked the parts where Bob's life outside the studio seeps in, even if it isn't happy. His small mentions of his long military career, his animal rescues, childhood, even his mother's health. He just comes across as a very genuine and kind person, a far cry from your average "TV show mentor" from the 90's. I would have loved to see what he could have accomplished with a KZbin channel. With no time limit or producers and just able to work and talk as long as he wanted?

Bob~ such a lovely soul who inspires us all to play with imagination to create from within and share :) We need more Bob's for our Children learning to embrace within their innate brilliance and shine forth. Seems Technology as wonderful as it is for us to all connect via the super highway yet we have lost the art of spirit simply playing within which truly enriches the soul. When shared w/ community and when it inspires it's just like nature........ just being in flow of all there is~ synchronistic :)

Isn't that just a precious little devil? I love all those happy one-liners he says. Even without seeing his face, you can hear him smiling. This man was as close to perfect as it comes. We'll miss you, Bob Ross. Have fun painting the worlds.

I nearly cried at the end of this video...the fact that a human being can be so full of positivity, calm, love, compassion and creativity is so inspiring. I don't think he ever casts anything in a negative light. He is an inspiration to me and so many, for his attitude to art and his attitude to life.

If Bob Ross fused with Fred Rogers, it would've created a being whose very voice ended all conflict in the world, if not the entire universe.
