Man, the endings hold a special place in my heart. You see Julian being all upbeat in the series. Then a particular event happens and his life takes a dramatic turn. Then you look at the 3rd ED where he's looking at photos of his mentor and everyone around him, the smile replaced by bitterness and exhaustion on his face. I just lost it when I saw that one. Damn. Stuff like these are testament to the show being a true legend. BTW, please review Space Battleship Yamato and it's remake by Xebec Studios, Yamato 2199. I think you'll like it.

I really wasn't bothered by them though (minus the terraists, they kinda suck and the show really missed out on an opportunity there to really explore fanatical terrorism). After watching this anime, I spent two years without watching any other anime. I just couldn't this is not only a great anime, it is one of the best pieces of media out there. And I include TV shows, movies, theatre plays, the works. This is just so complex and deep that I think it warrants a rewatch just to understand it properly. The one dimensional enemies you mention, I think they portray religious fundamentalism to a tee. Basically they were being played by everyone while they thought they were the players and in the end turns out that they had little power when the chips were laid down. They were self delusioned and not relevant. I found the show portraied it really well. God I want the english version of the novels...

I absolutely love this show. The characters are very memorable and extremely well handled, the story goes into war far more in depth than any other series I've seen, despite having such high complexity and scale, it somehow manages to have a solid ending that ties everything up in an extremely cathartic and satisfying way and it has such a high scale, elegant and mature presence to it... but I won't call it a masterpiece. I'm not as forgiving of the 1D villains as you are because they're very important parts of the plot and make it far more preachy than it had to be... and because of the amount of exposition and lack of creative or expressive animation, I honestly do consider it to be a very lazy adaptation of a novel. I still love it though despite that.

This is one of the best videos you have produced Bob. Not just because I love this anime, but because I love mature war dramas that explore the complex implications of human drama and carry huge historical precedence within their narratives, as I believe this series takes heavy influence from the Prussian Civil War. Sometimes history is more fantastical than the greatest works of fiction.

The fact that they use classical music for their combat scenes make this really immersive at the opposite of what would happen with any other kind of music. I can't explain why I feel that. I totally agree with the Prussian comparison you do, and can only admit that you are right: history provides better stories than most pure fictions, that's why this show did a so great job by using historical resources for battles, etc.

This is the best anime I ever seen. The charactezation, story telling, concepts were handled magisterially. In my opnion, all details were important for the purpose of this anime. I see why you say the villains looked very shallow and cliché, but you have to consider this The show focused on the antagonization between Wenli and Lohengram, that both were the "good side", and I remember Wenli quotes referencing to the "evil side" in fiction, saying "it would be more simple if it were like an anime or movie", and once he said "most of time there are more wats of "Good vs Good" than "Good vs Evil", they were clearing trying to build a concept where in real life there arent villains, just different point of views, so not developing villains here are not that big sin. The villains on this show only served to contrast with the "two good sides" that were villains one in the eye of the other. But I dont think they were that cliché, Oberstein for example felt really like a villain of a tragedy work.

You have a point that he had skill but first he had no real reason to join military at least at that age. Reuanthal was a noble with higher rank than he was. This anime is realistic and does not glorify war, it shows the gruesomeness and realism of the countless deaths that war brings. It also shows you how life is at the top, as an admiral or a tyrannical leader, the moral conundrums, the guilt, the pressure, the stress, how they justify themselves, and the love they have for their people. You see the vulnerabilities of even the strongest characters, humanizing everyone in a realistic fashion. It also shows you the life of a politician and the game of politics and warfare.

I really enjoyed this anime, and this review spurred me into watching this. Though I like this review, there are some common conceptions of this anime that are very widespread and portrayed as irrefutable facts when they are rather at best subjective and at worst false, these I wish to correct. First off, this isn't the greatest anime of all time as so many people say. It may be my favorite anime alongside with cowboy bebop, but saying it is the best ever is so arrogant and inconsiderate of other peoples preferences. This anime isn't in many ways the normal anime-experience, it is really more like western live-action dramas, with very few action scenes, and overall a pace that isn't all to quick (though it isn't slow, it is just paced more realistically, with the complexity realism means). It's an excellently crafted anime script-wise, a fact, but that doesn't mean it is the greatest anime of all time, or even watchable for everybody. Also, though the character rooster of the anime is big compared to almost any other anime, you do not get to know 20+ characters intimately, and I think the example of the microphone-maker and his family in this review is a bit silly and misleading. This point of many fully-developed characters always seem exaggerated to me, and I don't get why, quality over quantity any day. The characters that are focused on are however very well developed and feel very much like actual people, and there are at least 5-8 of these. And yes you will cry when some of them die, cause people die. And people don't seem to want to talk about the animations (though this review gives it a fair part), disregarding it for the sake of the story and characters. Though I somewhat agree with this sentiment, that the story is the most important, it isn't logical to do this when evaluating an animated show. Animations are often half the reason I watch anime, and one of the reasons I watch so few animes (since quite often the animation isn't the best). The animations aren't great in this show, they really aren't. The style is however pretty, to me, though this anime suffers the lack of any substantial concept-design of the worlds the characters inhabit, like so many other animes. So many boring beige-office like rooms that the Japanese seem so very fond of so they put them into any anime, regardless of genre, time-era and story. The ships are awesome however, and the scale of the space-battles is absolutely awesome. All in all, a great anime, but I just wanna make clear that I don't like the elitist demeanor some fans of this show seem to have. So, my recommendation is simply that if you like epic-scale storytelling, character development and the occasional cool space-battle, this is the anime for you.
@amichiganblackman32009 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I watched the first movie and a few episodes of the ova and kinda forgot about it a little lol. So I'm gonna pick it back up soon. It was great from what I saw though. It's funny everything you said about the story is SO true. I literally had a piece of paper jotting down positions and names to reference while I was watching lol. In my spare time I write a bit of fiction. And anime inspires me a whole lot. What you said about being able to tell what's happening with a character (like you said about one character's drinking habits) without being explicitly told everything is AWESOME. Showing vs telling is a BIG thing for me; it makes me feel so much more engaged. I don't want to be told a story I want to experience it. As you already noted, if done properly there can be a huge leap in quality. The viewer shouldn't always be told what to think. but wow I'm really amped to get back on this series now! This is exactly why I love anime so much and tell people it's a literature in it's own kind of way. There are some series that really have exemplify terrific writing (not just in anime but in fiction in general) and it sounds like this is another one. When people try to say anime is childish I suspect this will be an anime I use as an example to prove otherwise. After only seeing a movie a couple episodes I knew this was good, but you just made it official Bob. Excellent review! I'm gonna have to marathon this soon.

i really liked the show and would give it 9/10. would have given it 10/10 if it wasn't for the god awful battle strategies and the inconsistant laws of space when it happens. just take (i think, been a while now) the first battle, yang vs reinhard. yangs strategy is to plow through reinhard, does a 180* and shoots reinhard in the back - OK but the problem is this either took a few seconds like it was shown and reinhard couldn't react or he just sat there for hours while yang rode through and set up an offensive line behind him and then when he starts to move he cant just turn around like yang did but have to do a full lap around to face him? what? then in another fight yang lures (i think) bittenfeld into charging into him and then spreads out and circles him, somehow he misses friendly fire but instead of spreading out too or rushing through to get out bittenfeld just sits there and gets hammered. i just think the show is great but the damn battle strategies pissed me off on both sides. a couple really good ones like hiding behind asteroids, using abandoned ships as a fake force/explosive trap orusing solar winds but other than those its was pretty BS.

I feel as though those inconsistencies were just to negate the possibility of endless and unrealistic battles. The battles are long as it is, and if there were actual space physics applied, then the ships would either move extremely slowly making the battles just a ton of repositioning until one party eventually retreats, or it would be extremely fast all the time, which would make the whole thing seem like a show for kids designed to have battles were strategy can't be applied because it is moving far too fast for realistic ways of strategy application. Also, even though some strategies were sub-par for the show, the strategies in Legend of the Galactic Heroes are easily the best in anime (not that that is much of an accomplishment).
@dfghj2418 жыл бұрын
i hear ya. but you know what, i'd rather have the battle plans in there. you could easily get way with just having the guy say "fire" and then a bunch of scenes of space battles and desperation. that they took into consideration that these characters are devising combat strategies that considers thousands of giant warships just adds a unique flavor, independent of how improbable they seem. its all about the napoleonic illusion.

Selena C Yes they are but, the ANIME is coming from Sentai. I mention this because you said the only way you'll be able to watch it is fansubbed. link: www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2015-07-02/sentai-filmworks-adds-legend-of-the-galactic-heroes-higurashi-anime/.89987

I knew about Sentai. It's just that they don't have their own streaming service. Besides their physical copies, which may be the only way to legally watch this anime eventually, they need to put it on someplace big online, like Hulu or Crunchyroll for me to really be sold, or for it to gain mass popularity. Streaming has become absurdly popular these past few years. Plus, the DVDs don't have a set release date. Wherever in 2016 could feel like a long ways away.

Selena C Lots of shows that they own the license to have been on Hulu or Crunchyroll. Look I'm not telling you not to watch fansubs. That's a totally okay thing to do. Your first two posts just gave no indication that you new the show was getting released here.

I just started watching this series recently and I must say it's a lot to take in at one time! The only negative that I've seen so far is that there are so many characters to remember as well as people's ranks changing almost every episode (I'm only on episode 15 so it probably changes later on). It gets a little confusing sometimes, because some of these characters seem important to the plot. Yet, they continue to introduce more the following episode! I can already tell that this is an anime that I'm gonna have to watch a few times to grasp completely lol.

The axes aren't actually because they CAN'T physically shoot, but because the particles you mentioned are actually explosive. They are highly volatile, and it basically turns the ship they're on into a powderkeg, so no one can shoot a gun, lest they ignite the gas like a match dropped into a gas tank. It's less that they lack the ability, and more that they have enough common sense not to.

Great spoiler free review of a rather lengthy show. As someone who is has now heard from multiple YT anime reviewers that this show is a must watch how can I legally watch this? I have seen it up on Amazon and Ebay, but haven't seen any legal streaming site carry it.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG ALAS YOU HAVE FINALLY REVIEWED THIS LEGITIMATE MASTERPIECE OF A SERIES!!! I haven't watched the review yet but knowing you Bob your review won't disappoint :D I remember when someone recommended this show to me, it was then I realized that anime and manga has so much more to offer and its such an amazing medium of entertainment. When I watched this show, the 1st season had me intrigued at the least BUT when I was watching the rest, the masterful storytelling forced me to open my mind and comprehend what is going on so I rewatched the series for a much better understanding and you know what? The series got better for the 2nd time I watch it! Its so good! (so good!). To think that this is the pinnacle of writing for anime and this is a novel adaptation done superbly right! Ok I better shut up and watch the review now XD

BobSamurai Anime Reviews Lol I just watched your review, and I think you are spot on for everything you've said especially when it comes to the pacing. Tbh I really hope Production I.G. knows what they are doing when they're doing another adaptation of LotGH. I generally enjoy their work but its very hard to keep up with the original yuh know? lol Anyways excellent review Bob I think you've done a great job with it :) (DAT 9.6/10 though XD I'm sorry but I'm not exactly the biggest fan of decimals but ehh screw it its a good score nonetheless ^__^)

Captain Kon'Doriano thanks, yea i hope they stay true to the canon. i wasn't a big fan of decimals with scores either until i switched to this more advanced scoring method, no point in rounding if you're gonna do all the math

BobSamurai Anime Reviews Lol true! So as you're watching this series who do you happen to favor more? Reinhardt or Yang? I honestly had a lot of trouble as to who I should cheer for but since I'm much more of a man for peace I rooted for Yang because I can sympathize with him more.

At 2.00 there is a mistake. The "von" in Reinhard's full name is only for those of the noble class. Lowengram or Mösel in the name are the place and a river that where under the name bearers control. He can not be a commoner. If he was a commoner it would not make any sense for him to be "rein" at "hard" in a corrupt monarchy. Also the father of Kircheis explains that the new neighbours are poor nobles.

Weird you disliked ending 4. It was my very favorite. I feel it accentuates perfectly how far the story had advanced all the way from Reinhard's childhood to the present. My truly best favorite intro was Kid from the gaiden series tho, truly touching. Anyways, this anime is truly amazing. One of the very best ever. Almost as good as Blood+

FINALLY this video is out I've been waiting for this. This anime is definitely in my top 5 favorites and it will probably stay that way for a long time. This show really made me feel that all the characters were real life people and that story was actually happening which hasn't happened to me in a while. I loved how the story really makes it okay to pick a side in the war and for a while I couldn't pick one but near the end I was rooting for the galactic empire (because of you know what) but I liked both sides in terms of characters equally especially between the two main characters (even though I like Reinhard a little bit more they're both great characters). anyways great vid bob and I can't wait for the berserk review it's gonna be hype.

**SPOILER ALERT** You imply that some of the villains were one-dimensional. Well, one major exception to this generalization is Rubinsky. Very well portrayed, like a mafioso. Actually, I can't remember a single one-dimensional or "flat" villain, maybe the priest comes close but he was no different from any modern religious fanatic.
