Actually the hand to hand combat IS explained in the series. The use of laser guns is not allowed during boarding actions because they could penetrate the walls of the spaceships and cause huge explosion, resulting to the destruction of the ship and the death of everybody on it.

This has probably been said many times before, but LOGH is like the War and Peace of anime industry. The sheer epicness of the show is enough to swing you off your feet and send you into that deep, contemplative realm where you do not just follow the anime plot, but connect the dots with actual historical events and personages, and from that huge torrent of information and thoughts you slowly start to extract and consolidate yourself. Not to mention the little sparkles of cinematic brilliances here and there scattered across the show.

Not a criticism, just an observation. The ships aren't as high tech looking because they are extremely efficient. the FPA ships are simpler because of mass production and lesser resources (i.e. russian and american tanks). While the Reich common ships are stronger but waste more resources and are larger targets(i.e. german tanks). The Reich flagships besides showing the status of the commander work similarly as the big german tanks (Koenig Tigers and alike). I'll probably have a couple more, but i'm still at 7:23 :P
@katarn1097 жыл бұрын
Also i would like to add that those battles are extremely realistic. In space, movement is not that easy, and as much fueling is not detailed at all in the anime you must be extremely conservative in space. Also, they are not extremely aerodynamic because you don't need to while in space(on how the ships do not look that futuristic).
@Nozawachter7 жыл бұрын
Also another difference in the ship design that reflect their governments thought process is that the imperial battleships can go directly in and out of orbit. This is because they are used to surpress insurrections. The free planet alliance ships are moored in orbit and the crew are shuttled via smaller ships. This cuts on costs and it makes sense since they are fighting a defensive war against the empire. *except that one time they got to go on the offensive and got mauled via the empires' scorched earth tactics.

Wrong , the democracy faction got more bulkier ships
@Beuwen_The_Dragon5 жыл бұрын
@@pizdanpula223 The majority of the Free Planets Alliance warships are long, but narrow, reducing their profile in head on engagements. Whereas the Imperial Warships are shorter, and have wider, stockier engines, no doubt allowing internal systems for these ships to enter planets atmospheres. There are also few FPA ships seen entering planetary atmospheres, namely Transports and Freighters. These ships are much wider than FPA Warships, designed for space combat. Still, their ship designs of both sides suit their respective nations perfectly. The Imperial Warships are broad, styled like Knights Armour, with ornate and often luxurious interiors, where the FPA's warships are more simple, utilitarian and made for purpose. They do not need to enter atmosphere as the FPA is not as showy as the Empire, and has no need for the spectacle of Flotillas flying over conquered cities.. Mind, this is just my inference, as the technology of spacecrafts is not entirely explained, outside of specific circumstances. ^.-.^

As far as the 2D battlefield goes, I thought it was kind of explained with the whole "enveloping" deal, where if you surround an enemy from every plane of space you run the risk of firing on your own ships. As far as the axe fighting, sometimes they'd mention something about some sort of particles being deployed that made the air itself explosive when gunfire was introduced (though to be fair they were pretty loosey-goosey with that). Great review though. I've been watching LOTGH throughout the winter and finished it a few weeks ago and I've been telling anyone that will listen about it.

As far as the two dimensional instead of three dimensional tactics, you must remember that in terms of the distances that these battles are taking place in, the possibility of dodging or avoiding a shot is almost impossible. Unless the sensors are capable of detecting objects faster than light, you would not have sufficient warning to avoid a laser weapon before it hit. Also, anytime you did attempt to maneuver at such long distances by the time you were able to reorient, your enemy will have shifted to face you head on as to prevent the smallest target for your weapons. At that point you were simply wasting the propellant for your maneuvering thrusters. As far as the axes go, it would be a very bad idea to shoot a laser or particle weapon within the confines of a ship's hull. If the weapon you used has sufficient penetrating power to go through body armor or the powered armor that we see in the series, then it would likely also go through the hull. A hole in the superstructure of the vessel would be fatal to anyone inside the compartment. Therefore, using axes would allow you, in conjunction with powered armor, to clear out a vessel and make a breach to advance further where other weapons could be used in relative safety.
@hieronymos_lo6 жыл бұрын
Well... actually there are scenes in which someone shoots himself or the others inside a ship. The axes combats take place mainly because of the existence of the zephyr particles.
@Ponja__6 жыл бұрын
The canon reason for the axes is that they usually use these things called 'zephyr particles' (or seffle particles if you read the wiki) that explode when heated by laser fire. So, you don't want to shoot the other guy when those are around, since that'll not only kill them, but you, and probably whoever else is on the ship when it takes a chunk out of the hull.

@@fedesur7261 Read more carefully please. What I said is "based on China's South/North dynasty history (AD 420~589)". China has 3500+ years of recorded history and what I mentioned is only a short part of it. What you said about Germany also applied to China in that period. China then was divided into 2 part the South dynasty and the North Dynasty. Both dynasties were ruled by military nobles. South dynasty was believed as more civilized (like the Galactical Federation) while the North dynasty more centralized and militarily superior (like the Glactical Empire). Both dynasties had been seeking the complete conquest of China and in the end the North dynasty, united by a usurper emperor who's a family member of old emperor's wife prevailed, when the South dynasty was weakened by a series of rebellions. Anyone who are familiar of Chinese history could see the likeness. Some of the event in the book was nearly copy-pasted from the history record. For example the brutal death of a tyrant emperor of Galactical empire hundreds years ago (he was too fat and couldn't move when the usurper send his hound on him). Good stuff, Grex. although I bet it was said numerous times already, the reason behind using batle-axes was, that the boarding shutles released the expoloding particle gas into the ship, it has attached to upon impact. gas that the standard laser rifles would ignite along with the entire ship. as for the 2 plane combat, it would be a wet dream of every admiral, to have the 3rd plane availbe, yet with the fleets of THAT size it would lead only to a complete mess. Hell, once they start jaming each other signals, they often had to send shutles with comands to the subcomanders flagships, just try to orginaze a fight in such conditions. That..and it also might just have been an unspoken, yet agreed convention, such as battle lines in napoleonic era (something to make the combat more "civilized" and efficent).
@Nozawachter7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you're the only person who mentioned the messenger shuttles. Which makes sense, not just because of communication jamming, but I think the armada sometimes stretches across light minutes, and it is sometimes actually faster to send a messenger on a ship that can warp to the other side. I remember there being a battle where the messenger ship was taken out by a freak laser shot causing a second or third ship to be sent, causing delay and confusion in the ranks.
@athee420 Жыл бұрын
The battle lines in Napoleonic and earlier battles weren't exactly there as a convention to keep the battles "civilised", rather a way to make the relatively primitive firearms of the day effective at all before the widespread usage of rifles. Other than that, a good points.
@HollrHollrGetCholera7 жыл бұрын
This was a well done video, especially the editing. I have one correction I want to try and make, and it is in regards to the 2D battle point, which is a common complaint of the series. It would make sense initially to find the linear space combat in LOGH odd, given that space is a 3 axis arena. However, on further reflection the reason for this linearity becomes clear. The space ships are firing at each other from hundreds of thousands of kilometers away and in largely visually unobstructed areas, making large scale fleet movements you might expect easily visible to the enemy and, given the distance, leaving enough time for a reaction. Keeping those two traits of the warfare in mind, what you get is two fleets firing at each other in a straight line no matter their orientation. Because large scale fleets act sort of as firing squads, individual movements along different axis are likely to result friendly fire at worst and disorganization at best, worsening the fleet's ability to react to the enemy fleet's movements. All of this comes together to make the kind of battles you see in the series the most logical outcome. Adding on to that, we do see in the series that while one fleet vs one fleet may be restricted to linear combat, adding additional fleets can get you different angles of approach and attack. This especially occurs in the large scale multi fleet battles between Reinhard's admirals and the FPA's admirals.
@texasspirit81387 жыл бұрын
plus a good amount of the battles takes place in a corridor where there is a limit as how far they can go up and down. and heck in the third and fourth season they showed what happens
@Nozawachter7 жыл бұрын
Also just to add to that, if you see a fleet in the distance is the series, it is often shaped like a star twinkle, stretching out vertically and horizontally. So they definitely aren't ignoring the idea of enveloping from above and below. Also, this series has "navigable space" not all space is traversable in this series, with the FPA and Reich being in two adjacent tendrils of the Milky Way galaxy, with 2 points that are close enough to form a corridor (tunnel) Isherlon and Phezzan corridors. When fighting in such corridors, the FPA had hugged the edge of the corridor so as nothing could get behind them. So perhaps on the rare occasions that they do fight using 3D tactics, maybe they are in a part of the galaxy that happens to have enough "head clearance"

But i do think that the clusters of ships should've been shown moving up and down just as much as they were shown moving left right forward and back.
@rzimz33557 жыл бұрын
There is a reason why ships fight in two dimensions. By the period of time the story takes place, electronic warfare has become extremely advanced, which means that conventional targeting systems wouldn't work. This means that ships must manually aim their weapons at one another. If they were to fight in two dimensions, it would be far easier to aim the ships' cannons.
@xaisthoj7 жыл бұрын
Basically, in a world of super stealth fighters, guided weaponry is no longer effective so it becomes WW2 all over again. Ships have to have small profiles facing the line of fire so that they are less likely to get hit by musket fire. They appear large and long on the side like a barn but they end up having a smaller profile facing fire as they are designed.
@Deukish6 жыл бұрын
Its been a while since I watched the series, but don't the corridors have physical "walls" (caused by tidal friction or something) that rip ships apart if they touch or pass it? Seems like another reason why they'd opt for 2d formations when you're given extremely limited space to operate in anyways (since the majority of battles in the whole war take place in the Iserlohn corridor.)

Strategy and tactical analysis are things that always fascinated me as well as what kind of person it would be to be able to objectively make decisions like that and the ramifications of such decisions. Im totally all in on this series after I finish watching all the kara no kyoukai movies ill make my way to finally watching this as well.

Binged the show and desperately looked for people on youtube who review and talk about it to ease out of the pain that watching it is over. It is the mark of a fantastic piece of media, that finishing it can leave one with a hollow and solemn feeling. It's a shame an in-depth examination of, in my opinion, the best anime ever made, only has 6 thousand views, but the small size of the people who appreciate it gives almost a kindred sense of connection. Great video man.

It's been a while I've watched this, but I remember something about the use of battle axes in battle, if I remember correctly they frenquently used a weapon that dispersed something called zephir particles, that would explode if ignited by rifle fire, and those particles are hard to detect and were constantly used by troops in melee combat, so they avoided using guns because of the possibility of igniting those particles in case they were there, and axes were used since medieval times as a plate armor counter weapon so it would make some sense they used new versions of axes to counter the armored enemies since they could not risk using gunfire.

Watch this series! absolutely brilliant
@neoritter56187 жыл бұрын
Seffel (spelling is probably wrong) are the reason for battle axes. One side or the other developed a particle that can inundate an area like gas and if laser fire goes off would explode it all. At first it was uncontrollable, so even the side using it has to be wary, but in the series someone figures how to properly direct the particles and use it efficiently.
@ilari903 жыл бұрын
I think the crudeness of the battleships is purely due to the production things, just to make them effective at killing for the lowest cost, gives more feeling to the meaningless losses of all the crew inside. Everything is just numbers in the big game.

Good to see another recommendation video for this gem and thanks for taking on my request.
@yeetkunedo7 жыл бұрын
ArcaneThinker Wrong, actually. The use of axes (and crossbows) represent a need for low-tech, close-quarters combat in an age where Seffle particles can be deployed, thus rendering light-based weapons and traditional firearms useless due to a single shot becoming suicidal for all sides. Firing a laser pistol in a corridor with those particles flooding the air would turn said corridor into an inferno. This is why you see the stairway battle in Ep62. It forces the close-quarters fight, which is why the Rosenritter favor these tactics.

I agree with all your points. Especially about the Earth Cult. That whole story arc could have been removed without losing anything in the story. What I liked the most is that the main characters were, in my opinion, supposed to be Alexander The Great and Sun Tzu. Two of the most influential military minds in history. I also wonder if Reinhardt's empire fell apart the same way Alexander's did, with his admirals turning on each other and ripping it apart.

I think the reason they fight with battle axes is because the armour they were seems pretty laser resistant, shown by the fact that their have been moments in the show where they deflet incoming shots. So running up close with an axe just became a more reliable solution

11:19-11:30 Well, anime can portray history in a way that does it justice. I recall an anime where the first 3 episodes are a very accurate depiction of the battle of Sekigahara. It could be used as a documentary.

Can you review Aria ? Even if you're not into SoL , I highly recommend it. The characters go through extensive growth throughout the 3 seasons , resulting in one of the best anime finales you'll ever experience. It will start off slow but know that the first seasons introduces you to the character , the second haves you spend time with them and the third lets you say goodbye. Just don't expect lollis with guns while going in and you'll end up loving it.

Mittermeyer and Reuenthal remind me me the US civil generals Hancock and Armistead who both where more less brothers but one chose union the other confederate and later fight one other. And I like to add about the tech the empire is a aristocratic monarchy so to keep power you have to dumb down the people so they don't get to smart and for the hand to hand battles the empire developed these particles which explode if you shoot lasers so it's better to go hand and plus the axes are titanium coated with diamond so yeah deadly.
@Xoruam6 жыл бұрын
"the empire is a aristocratic monarchy so to keep power you have to dumb down the people so they don't get to smart" People think that, but that's not necessarily true. It's only true when you are trying to take all the power for the sake of yourself, and shut yourself from the people. It all comes down to trust, if people trust the ruler and his rule benefits them, even if they are smart, they won't rise up against him. It's just that a lot of autocrats we know were assholes, so we just automatically assume that autocracy is the same as e.g. ban on freedom of speech and dumbing down society. You could actually argue that in modern democracy it IS democracy that favours dumbing people down, as people who are stupid won't be able to discern good policies from the bad, therefore they will vote for the party which metaphorically makes prettier puppy eyes to them.

The axes are a reference to the power armors on The Forever War, an magnificent novel by Joe Haldeman. The 2d battles maybe are the result of avoiding the friendly fire. For me the worst were the lack of a strong female character, mostly of them are always shadowed by the male cast. Anyway, probably one of the best experiences I´ve ever live on any fiction, not just anime. A must watch even to comprehend better the way humanity works.

Ships in the series use neutron beam weapon as their main weapons and electron beam on the side for fighter screening. A laser that can cut through and destroy ships in less than a second at distance of dozen of light years is a big too much on a ship that around 1000m on average.

I was just watching LOGH (OVA) and GOT Season 8 and got near end of both series at the same time. I was more exited for 25-30 year old LOGH series finale than the GOT pretentious forced subverted finale. For the Earth Cult I thought they would play on gaining people in both FPA and Galactic Empire through religious beliefs, and then gain more power in both governments by placing high officials on certain positions. That would be interesting plot where at some point few characters from GE and FPA could work together in short time to prevent cult influencing both governments.

As far as the ships sticking to a 2D plane goes , I noticed this too but honestly I don't know that it's that big of a plot hole. For starters the formations definitely do have a vertical dimension, it's not like every ship is in a neatly in a plane. One thing worth considering is that having a vertical formation presents a big target for barely any benefit moreover the enemy can avoid encirclement by matching speeds with the enemy's advance even as they are engaged so encirclement tactics are much more difficult in general. Also I think the conventional wisdom of "surrounding the enemy to win" may not apply as much in 3D (even if you manage to corner the enemy from 3 directions the enemy still has 3 more directions to retreat, moreover to fully encircle the enemy you would need a substantially larger army). Finally it may be that the spacecraft are not capable of free 3D movement (Typically there is only one engine(s) with the force to move the aircraft so it either takes a great distance or "parking" manouvres to move in any direction other than which the main engine is pointing) so even if there was some great benefit to having a vertical formation it's probably not worth sacrificing the fleet's maneuverability

lol, talk about incompetent leaders before Yang and Reinhard as the bad. Take a look at our world. You do see a lot of incompetent leaders and the rise of better ones. Studying history might help you see that clearly. Perhaps, you could read the book and carefully study how Yang described and mentioned those 2 other factors and how they resemble the fractions in the real world in that time when the author wrote it. There are obvious reasons why those are added to the book. I would like to see another deep analysis on the new remake. Still gave you a Like, appreciate the effort/attempt.

I don't know if they said this in he original but in the remake i believe they said the reason they used axes and melee weapons is because a highly explosive/reactive partial called zeffile particles were often sent into the areas of fighting so instead of using guns and possibly causing an explosion they used melee weapons and soon ranged jus because redundant due to corridors and such

Not sure that the militaries are bad. Free planets is better overall, but smaller in size. So they are even in what they can do. First battle was a fine example. Free planets had a better plan, that would of worked against all the other admirals would of put forward. Not until Reinhart said his plan did it even click there was another way with the better of his admirals.

I too hated the Earth Cult. Not only because they were - as you said, in contrast to the FPA and the Empire - one-sidedly 'evil', but also because I felt that the plot resorted to them as a cheap trick to get something done. Won't spoil anything, but 'character x needs to die for plot advancement' or 'we need to explain why inexplicable event x happened' and there's the Earth Cult all of a sudden. I like the idea of an organized group that (a) was underground and reached far enough to have both followers as well as an impact on both (or even the three) nations and (b) lived for the romanticized idea of earth, but it was so poorly executed and truly a stain on an otherwise near-perfect series.
