I'm biased because it's my first but for me it's the 124060. Classic and modern day Submariner with its robust modern build, asymmetrical with the no-date, which is the classic Submariner look anyway, also you dont have to worry about the vintage/neo-vintage factor, and if you can get it from your AD (which you can now pretty easily) then it helps building that elusive "relationship".

Good fun, thanks guys. I can't pick a team here, just share my experience. My first Sub was a random serial 14060m, didn't quite gel with it, Next I got a (not quite Sub but close) SD4K, didn't really bond with that one either. I was always fascinated/enamored by the 16610, and I happened upon a random serial one of those, so snapped it up. It ended there, I've had it for 3.5 years now, looks and feels perfect.

got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on MAMACOO 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.

My first sub was the 16610 and I agree with most of Ripley’s points. I have since sold it for a 116610 because I really liked the idea of the glidelock clasp and my wrist is prone to swelling. I do kind of miss the smaller proportions and overall vibe of the aluminum bezel though and I’m leaning towards a 5513 next.

My first Sub was a 14060. I wanted a purists Sub instead of the too common date model. A neo vintage, relatively affordable version of the James Bond Sub, holes lug, without date and tritium lume. However, I later wanted a date function without the cyclops, so I bought a 16600 Sea-dweller. And then 2 years later I wanted a Bluesy so I bought a 16613. Now I have 3 different Rolex dive watches I am happy to wear for my weekly rotation.

I’m wearing the 14060m, as it gives vintage vibes, 2 lines of text and nice symmetry, but is still robust enough as a daily beater. Currently wearing it on a rubberb strap, makes it look like a yachmaster. Sometimes on a leather strap, as that was good enough for Sean Connery. It’s quite a fun little watch.

5 digit. Full stop. Solid/newer movement, less maintenance sapphire crystal, newer style gold surround lume plots, while maintaining a more classic shaped case. Also more versatile than newer 6 digit subs when it comes to straps. I love 4 digits and would prefer one in the collection, but they’re older and potentially more maintenance/less durable for a first Sub which is likely to be a daily wearer. From there you just have to decide date or not. That’s personal preference

Bought a Bluesy as my first Sub, a Kermit second before I bought a traditional black dial “plain Jane” sub 3yrs ago. I chose the “date” sub but wish now I’d of chosen the “no date” and feel I made a mistake. Full Disclosure: I’m not a fan of the basic Sub as I don’t care further unpolished bracelet. Today a $9K sub watch can’t be consider a tool watch due of not being scratch resistant. I have the 2009 M no date version and I don’t use it for long periods of time because I will get frustrated to have a scratch bezel. I have a Hulk also and is beautiful but is not the perfect Rolex due to the super case design compared to the bracelet dimensions. I got my 12 digit date sub 2024 and this is the perfect watch.

Oh, totally disagree with all of you. A vintage sub like the 16800 isn't where you want to start. A modern sub like the 126610 is the uninformed easy choice and it's too big. The 16610 is the most common sub out there, while better than the 126610 since you're going for a modern vintage, it's too obvious a choice. The best sub is a no date, in the classic elegant 40mm size. The 14060M stands above all of them. It's got the modern 3130 movement, it's easy to live with, it's beautifully symmetrical, and you can pick between a classic 2 line without rehaut engraving, or a 4 line with rehaut engraving, whichever you prefer. (I'm in the 2 line camp). I would argue the best sub to buy is actually a Sea-Dweller. Either the aluminum bezel 16600 or the ceramic 116600 with the modern bracelet and clasp. It's similarly sized to a sub, has a date but no cyclops, is 4x more water resistant, and has a gas escape valve. The 116600 is the most elegant ceramic dive watch Rolex has made. The lugs are shorter and thinner than the 116610, it's diameter is smaller than the 126610 and definitely smaller than the 126600.
