He was unable to do this however, because of the pandemic. I quote this line all the time when talking about something that happened in my own life. After Thanksgiving 2018, something started happening to my body and mind that I still don't know the origin of, I think it was some kind of digestive problem because I was always nauseous and constipated and starving yet couldn't stomach one bite of food, but the worst effect of all was a psychological symptom: constant feelings of abject horror or dread, almost every minute of every day and most of the time at night that I would have rather been sleeping. But my life was better than it had ever been by that point, so I had nothing to pin that fear on, and my mind just went in search of something, fixating on every shadow of suffering in the world, on the concept of death itself, and especially on the doom of the whole universe zillions of years in the future. This lasted throughout 2019, but as time wore on, I started to get brief little respites from it, moments where, although no facts about the world or my life had changed, I still felt mercifully less terrible about them, just because of something happening in my body that effected my emotions. And then the dread and horror would just come right back again. Yet over the course of that year, these brief moments of respite got more frequent, and longer, and stronger, to the point where I wasn't just feeling not so bad ever now and then, but I actually could feel GOOD again sometimes. So by early 2020, I was starting to feel like life was finally going to go back to normal, like I could stop having this constant feeling of inescapable doom like the whole world was ending... and then the funniest thing happened.....

@@deltablaze77 Pretty sure it's a reference to climate change, but with a double meaning of going outside while having agoraphobia. "You say the ocean's rising like I give a shit You say the whole world's ending, honey, it already did." Most climate scientists are aware that it's too late. The damage from pollution and climate change is irreversible, all we can do is stop it from getting worse. It's also a mirror to his own mental health struggles. "It's almost over, it's just begun Don't overthink this, look in my eye Don't be scared, don't be shy Come on in, the water's fine." Definitely a reference to his panic attacks and being on stage/going outside (possibly?). But it's also a reference to accepting the inevitable climate hell we're going into. Only reason I say this is the constant reference to water. The blue lighting sort of embeds the symbolism further.

"You say the oceans rising, like I give a shit. You say the whole world's ending, honey it already did." My feels: 📈📈📈📈📈📈📈📈
TLDR: I’ve heard this song a few times, but today, a full year after Covid slowed down I watched this music video. After Bo picks up the camera and shows that he is performing to an empty room even after improving himself. It really made me look back on those past 3 years and I realized how lonely I actually was. I thought I was fine, I was always an introvert. But looking back and not remembering anything but my sisters closed door, only seeing my mom when she checked in on me during a zoom call. Never saw my dad. How stressed out I was to wake up in the morning. Didn’t even want to eat breakfast but was starving, asking my mom to bring me a sandwich because I couldn’t leave my computer. I can’t believe how I was living. Anyways, I’ll come back to this song later. Good night everybody.

I remember when I first listened to this song I was in a depressive and dissociative slump at the time. I was numb and reverted back to listening to depressing songs in an attempt to feel something. Then, the moment Bo broke from the song and into "I'm talking to you get the fuck up!" I was genuinely sent reeling. It triggered this incredibly deep dissociative sensation the likes of which I've only felt about 4-5 times in my life.(And I dissociate A LOT) Much more than just heavy dissociation, but some sensation that takes dissociation and brings a genuine sense of reality breaking a part. I just stared at the screen, even after the video ended. Just staring, feeling like I couldn't move even though I knew if I just tried I could do it easily. Like there was some blockage preventing me to even try and move a muscle. I remember just crying on the floor of my room for at least an hour afterwards, having set the song to loop. I listen now, having just come from a sort of documentary video on youtube (literally watched it yesterday) that basically described Inside as "the punchline to a 15 year long joke". I've already found Bo's work to be incredibly metaphorical with hidden messages hidden within in such an intrinsical fashion. But now coming from that video it's like a new light has been shone on it. The video felt like a big sign reading "Bo, your message has been heard." It's this feeling I really don't know how to describe but it has me wanting to praise Bo, but also realizing that praise probably isn't something Bo wants to recieve. I really just feel like I need to say something but theres just no words to describe it. In case anyone's curious, video's called "Bo Burnham tried to warn us" and it's by a channel named "1rock" or "level1rock" or something like that.
@jasonwilson42832 ай бұрын

I didn't see any other comments talking about the background video. I tried so hard to figure out what angle it was recording from, but then I realized it's a pre-recorded video that he's re-enacting as it continues. Just another instance of Bo being so intensely choreographed and brilliant in his execution. Makes me think of being on a traditional stage with screens for the back to see clearly, as well as symbolizing the added layer of him being (literally now) in his own head, shadowed by his own success and expectations. So well thought out and amazingly open to interpretation.

@richardhead17892 жыл бұрын
Interesting interpretation. As someone who suffered from a lot of anxiety, I felt that scene was Bo yelling at himself. Anxiety can be crippling, and it feels like the thoughts in your head are screaming at you. "Don't be scared, don't be shy, Come on in, the water's fine." That's him trying to reassure himself. And when he says, "Get up! Get up! I'm talking to you - GET THE F*CK UP!" That's him being hard on himself for not getting back on stage, and literally being pulled up against his will to perform. The dizzying camera movements for the last verse symbolizes the disorienting feeling of a panic attack. It's almost out of body. Full disclosure, I'm an amateur psychologist at best.

@@richardhead1789 I think that's fascinating, I love that perspective too. I think he's definitely going through a lot of introspection in this song just as he is all throughout the special so that would make sense. I never thought about the "water's fine" lyrics like that either

I moved back home with my family to have the support needed for my son and I, and of course I love and adore him for he is my entire life, world, and stars, but I'll never forget the feeling of shame and sadness as I realized my life was going to be changed forever, and I would have to face other people's judgement as a single mom who got herself knocked up four months after finally moving out and going back to college. This exactly. I think that’s what gives it the power it has.

When he turns the camera around to show the "audience" and it's just his own shadow... That part gets me every time.

Yeah, the fact this is edited and filmed so much to feel like there's people there, only to reveal there's nobody there hits hard.

There’s a specific part of this song where he does this one melody …. Literally brings me tears when i hear , this song purely on a musical and sonic standpoint , is simply beautiful.

I think the reason inside comforts me so much isn’t just because i can relate to it on such a big level, i think the comfort I have in these music videos is that bo looks like my dad.

I dont know why, but this song fucking hit me right in the heart. E: After watching INSIDE i highly recommend it, its such a great idea and really shows the struggles Bo went through. its more than just a comedy special its a work of art.

@@emmagn06_ This song is from his new Netflix special Inside :) imho it's the best thing he's done and I highly recommend checking it out!

@@thisisnotmercedes5408 After watching it a couple more times with people and really thinking about it, I think it's genuinely brilliant. Like it's easily the best thing he's done. Not to say his other stuff isn't great, I've been watching him since youtube and have always loved him, but he really hit something here. It's honestly groundbreaking and innovative as far as the medium is concerned, not just in the production but in what's discussed and how those ideas are being presented. It's not like he's digging the grand canyon, but he carved out a nice little hole. Not to mention he's a really talented musician lol. And it's on display in this special more than ever. ALL of the songs are bangers.

“You say the oceans rising, like I give a shit. You say the whole worlds ending, honey, it already did. You’re not gonna slow it, heaven knows you tried. Got it? Good, now get inside.” As an environmental science major who wanted to change the world and then developed severe depression from learning about the global situation resulting in me dropping out...yeah that shit makes me cry like a baby

”You say the ocean's rising like I give a shit . You say the whole world's ending, honey, it already did” is still the most brutal lyrics I've ever heard.
