A premium model of the Mercury Marquis from 1975 to 1982, the Grand Marquis became a standalone model in 1983. Throughout its entire production run, the Grand Marquis served as the Mercury line's flagship vehicle
It was Mercury's equivalent to Ford's Crown Victoria. Between 1979 and 2011, the Lincoln Town Car along with the Mercury Grand Marquise shared the Panther platform.
This is the story of the Mercury Grand Marquis!

Please save that car. I have a 77 just a base model. Nothing fancy like a sister model Continental but still cool. Hideaway headlights, power antenna, 8-track player, bench seat in the front, skirt cover on the rear wheels, vinyl roof, frameless doors and so on. 460 isn't strong, only 200HP, but is is a perfect cruiser. Literally the longest car around and got a laser sharp lines. I sold mine to a friend but I already miss it. Hopefully he will restore it one day. I came from Europe at 2014 and this car represents me the "american dream". I bought for $1.5k in a bad shape but I loved every single mile with her.

My parents had a land yacht like that. I think it was a 1975 in a light blue color. You had to line it up perfectly straight to get it into the garage. My Dad made these alignment markers and put down wood blocks to stop the front tires otherwise the car could have driven through the wall. In fact he cut a clearance slot into the garage side of the wall for the front bumper to fit in. He also raised the stiffener beam from the bottom of the garage door to above the height of the rear bumper so the door can close
@honestone490
@honestone490 Жыл бұрын
You were lucky your parents didn't own an actual real boat. The added trailer hitch on the car would have certainly prevented the garage door from closing. That's for sure. Maybe that's another reason why many call these vehicles today land yachts. :)

@@honestone490 Well, we did own a real boat too, it was a 19' bow rider. But it was kept moored at a dock, not trailered.

While that may seem ridiculous, it's actually not that bad. None of these 4 door taxi trucks with the tiny little 4 foot bed that almost nothing fits in, and 4 bucket seats, making them 4 passenger vehicles, will fit in any standard residential garage. $100,000+ for one of those things and you have to park it outside.

We had a 1979 Mercury Grand Marquis when I was a kid that looked exactly like the one in this video: dark blue with the dark blue velour interior. My dad, James Willie Bernard, bought a 1977 Mercury Marquis sta/wgn., tan with a lt. brown interior; July 6, 1981! 13 mos. later, he tore it up (no auto insurance!); he'd still drive it till 39 yrs ago this month when he financed a '77 Monarch 2dr.! Though he promised me that Marquis, he gave it to by brother T-Toddy in September that year (he gave it to his twin sons' mother!), though! May 19 was 27 years ago ('97) as I'd purchase an '85 Grand Marquis LS 4dr., all blue w/a 5-litre, TBI V8 and automatic overdrive transmission! The one thing that scared me is the same reason why I want a similar model (until the '89 model): the fuel gauge! When it was low on gas, it lit up as amber, later a reminder tone sounded!!

in mid 90's I bought a 78 Grand Marquis 4D from a Friend from work for $250 with only 90,000 on the 400. Best Car I owned. Got 15mpg C/H and up to almost 30 on the Interstate between Kansas City and Saint Lois.. Down Hill. NO Gas Gage. Only Ran Out Once. Lost my exhaust pulling out a Oil Change Station. Was not that loud really. Ended up putting Dual 3in on it, tho it was Not the Cop Car Version.... And when I pumped the brakes, the Front would Bounce.. Loved doing that at stop lights.. New ones were only $25 for a pair. Cruse Control Worked After I adjusted the chain. Had a Pair of Pliers keeping the Carb completely open all the time. Had Stick holding the Headlights Open. Had to get rid of it, NOT By Choice when I had to live with relatives and they Hated it. It just Stopped running and would not even turn over one day. Distributor would not turn.. They called one of those "We Pay for your Used Car" Things in the paper and they came when everyone was gone and took it. I didn't know who they called and they would not tell me or I would have called the Police about my stolen car.... I see some now that are still in Mint Condition selling for close and over $5,000... It was Powder Blue... You rub your fingers across it and had Blue Powder on them after..... Even after a Good Washing... I miss that car.

Fantastic! Another great effort. I liked the footage mixed with the photos. Well put together effort. I was glad to see Oldsmobile Ninety Eight mentioned as well. I liked the information shared. It is sad to think Mercury is indeed gone. They sold a lot of Grand Marquis over the years. The styling and the car did endure for many years. I wonder what it would be like in 2022. The 2000's Mercury Marauder was based on the Grand Marquis was was created to compete and it offered bucket seats. You could get a Grand Marquis with bucket seats and floor shifted in the 2000's. It was Grand Marquis LSE I think or something like that. Crown Victoria offered a bucket seat model as Crown Victoria LX Sport. The Grand Marquis sold in the Middle East had Lincoln Town Car seats and features. It was called Mercury Grand Marquis GSE. I like when digital gauges became an option in the 1990's. Thank you again.

Owned two...the first was a tired 1980, very solid southern car. Ate a timing gear set at 139k miles. Had engine rebuilt. Replaced the variable venturi carb with a Holley 2300. Night and day difference. 26MPG at 60 mph afterward. Loved the car. Still dream occasionally that I still have it. Bought my second, a 1992 LS from "the little old lady next door" with only 58k on it. She said she had to get $1800 for it. I told her, "stay right here I'll be right back". Went to the bank. Withdrew the cash, paid her then asked her what it needed. She said an oil change and msy need back brakes next year. That car was an absolute dream. Never gave me trouble of any sort. IMHO one of the best built cars ever made. Great video!!!

My parents bought a brand new 1997 Crown Victoria LX and I loved that car. It had a cell phone installed in it and a JBL Stereo Cassette with a 10 disk changer in the trunk. As I was 16 at the time I only went on a couple trips with them that summer and as soon as I got my license I was driving my own car that I bought and worked on for a year before I could "technically" drive. It was a 1988 2 door 5-speed Ford Tempo, which was a piece of crap compared to the Vic but I didn't care. It had a great heater (I live in Canada) amazing on gas, and after I put a decent Stereo in it it was perfect because it was all mine! However in 2007 I did buy my parents Crown Vic because a few years earlier my mother bought a AWD Ford Escape and the Vic was more or less parked in the garage all winter and only drove in the summer as mother mother refused to drive it in the snow because it was RWD.

Some of my earliest memories are of my mom's old Grand Marquis. I don't clearly remember the color, but it runs in my mind it was some shade of dark blue or blueish green. I don't know exactly what year it was either, but going by pictures of other ones, it had to have been somewhere between a '79 and an '83. It had the older style hubcaps like the ones shown at 2:07, but it was the same body style as the one at 2:30. I also distinctly remember the tail lights looking like the ones seen at 2:44. I remember it eventually started "breaking down" on her and she traded it in towards a brand new 1991 Honda Civic LX with a 5 speed manual, and she drove that car all the way up into the early 2000's.

Grand Marquis became top of the line for 75 because Monterey was discontinued. Marquis moved down to fill the entry level spot in the full sized range. Marquis Brougham moved down to fill the former Marquis slot. Grand Marquis was created to fill the slot left at the top of the range. A lovely car from front to back. The 302 was not the only engine offering in the Panther platform cars. Via a special purchase, 351W was available through 91. In Canada the 351W was an RPO thriugh 87 on Colony Park and 91 on sedans. In 89, the 351 cost me a whopping $185. With the 351 the Trailer Tow III Package came with a 6,000 pound tow rating. The engine had the same wonderful going through for 86 as the 302, resulting in a horsepower rating of 215 with dual exhaust and 390 lb/ft of torque at 2,200 rpm.

Great history, BBs! The only negative I have to say about the Grand Marquis in later years (like most Mercury models toward the end) was that they were almost indistinguishable from their Ford brother. My first car at 17 years old was a 1989 Grand Marquis. It was a yellowish-beige color with a tan cloth interior. It was gutless but comfortable. I took pretty good care of it but it blew a head gasket before 100k and I got myself a 1999 Trans Am WS6. 😎

A big Mercury fan here; we have a 2004 Marquis, purchased new. The car has NEVER been in a car wash, and I only use water to wash the car, no detergents. The body side moldings have deteriorated for no good reason, and seem to have the consistency of Playdough. For anyone who owns a newer Marquis with a computer, many Ford Dealers are not telling customers that the main computer can be reprogrammed. If you have problems with your engine light coming on after replacing plugs and coils, find a Ford Dealer that will reprogram the main computer. Pines Ford in Pembroke Pines Florida was the only dealer in the Miami / Ft. Lauderdale area I could find that does this. Just have to say that there are some real idiots working at Ford who would cancel an entire division like Mercury. The Marquis started out as a truly beautiful car up to the mid seventies. After that, Ford's infamous "egg" look plagued many of Ford's vehicles, even the last Thunderbird. Ford's egg styling was apparent in the last of the Marquis', Lincolns, and small cars. How Ford can no longer offer a single Mercury or a Thunderbird is truly baffling. The new Mustang EV is a complete disgrace !!!! There's nothing about a Mustang EV SUV that resembles a Mustang, except for the horse emblems.

I had a 1996 and a 2006 . Put nearly 200,000 on them . No major problems. An intake manifold on the 96. An alternator and front struts on the 2006. My parents bought a 2001 brand new. My mother still drives it. It has about 240,000 . Rear axle bearings, AC compressor, ball joints were the only significant repairs. They were nearly bulletproof

@@stevenroche9874 True. Note that the repairs that we’re needed were few and not very major repairs. No engine or transmission problems, mostly routine maintenance.

@@dmandman9 Were transmissions and rear axles serviced ? How about coolant changes ? Many owners skip these vehicle life extending maintenance procedures.
@dmandman9
@dmandman9 Жыл бұрын
@@stevenroche9874 the rear axle bearings on the 2001 were replaced at around 200k. That’s the first time the rear differential was opened. It’s not limited slip. The transmission filter and fluid was changed around 100k, the fluid was changed again at around 150k and around 220k. Coolant drain and refill around 200k. Many owners neglect the maintenance on these vehicles, and they still last a long time. They can often endure delayed maintenance and neglect a lot better than many other vehicles. That’s why they have a reputation of being nearly bulletproof.

@@dmandman9 True. As you know, many Crown Vics were used for police and taxi duty. I am sure maintenance was not stellar, yet the bullet proof reputation endured. Had the differential oil been routinely changed on the 2001, the bearings would not have failed.

My dad rolled our 1976 Ltd station wagon and a 1975 granada while towing the granada to my grandmothers farm back in 1990 or so. With both cars totaled we had to borrow my uncle's 1976 grand marquis. Mustard yellow and often misfiring, it was a gas hog! But it was classy huge car.

My grandfather and his parents each had their own. Two of them had cassette players and one A-Track. From I was told about my great grandfathers was he had the optioned Police Interceptor motor in it and when he got older the street racers would beat everybody in it every time and would always get the jump on them. I thought it was cool. What is more interesting is at one point he was a sponsored racer with his own sponsored car and before that he was in the U.S. Army Cavalry during WW2 and the Korean war.
