No Cadillac was better until the 80s when Cadillac goofed thanks to these emissions and CAFE under democrats in the 70s. That 4100 V8 was junk. Cadillac lost a lot of people to Mercedes and Lexus. Town car came to an end of its beautiful look in the 90s. Actually all GM and Ford products were best in the 60s and 70s.

I bought an '86 Cartier Town Car with high mileage out of a divorce settlement at a fire-sale price. I put about 50K more miles on it and sold it to my hairdresser. He still has that car (with over 300K on it now)! During a heat-wave that swept the deep-south back in the late 1990's I drove to car from Atlanta to Natchez, MS and back for a wedding. It was well over a hundred degrees every day! When I returned home my companion went to check all the fluids and was astounded to find not a drop in the radiator! Sure enough, we found a pin-hole leak in the face of the water pump. That thing had made that trip with no coolant and I never knew it! No Hot Light, no nothing! My everyday driver is a 2010 Ford Focus that I purchased new. Also, I currently have three vintage Lincolns: 1966 Continental Sedan in Venetian Yellow; 1976 Continental with Town Car option in Dove Grey with polished aluminum wheels; 1981 Continental Mark VI Pucci (full vinyl roof, lacy spoke wheels, and standard Fawn Beige metallic paint). My suicide door 1966 Lincoln is the most classic of all: incredible build quality and understated design. My 1976 Lincoln is much more flamboyant but still retains its stock appearance: crushed velour upholstery with unique scrolled stitching on front seat backs, large headrests, fully lined trunk, and half vinyl coach roof. It has an incredible ride with outstanding road presence...complete road isolation feeling like you are viewing the road as if it was a movie in a theater. My 1981 Mark VI Pucci is similar in engineering to the 1981 Town Car: very cushy ride and slightly better handling than my older Lincolns, but craftsmanship and quality of materials are not comparable to my older cars.

Adding a CD player would be relatively cheap for these cars, but cars this old with working AC will be rare. The AC conversion from very expensive R12 to 134A refrigerant will be the expensive part.
@johnnymason24602 жыл бұрын
@@DUCKSAREEVILLLLLLLL I agree. The conversion of R12 to R134 is probably still very expensive. But it is necessary now.
@DUCKSAREEVILLLLLLLL2 жыл бұрын
@@johnnymason2460 Yes, except if a person could do it themselves. Then the price will be a few hundred, at most. I converted a Ford Taurus, and it wasn't that hard. Much more help available online, now, with videos, etc.

Personally I think the '60s - '70's were the best years the Lincoln looked good body and style wise.. I did notice you brought up the Navigator but not the Lincoln Pickup with its split talegate.. Was that just to keep us on the edge of our seats..?? Thanks for the posting 👍👍👍😎✌👋

Came back to see this again. I actually had 89 Town Car Signature and 89 Brougham deElegance which was the only real 89 Cadillac as far as I am concerned. Loved both. Lincoln was superior EXCEPT the Cadillac had magnificent tufted velvet interior 👌 giving a much more elegant look!

Town Car in the 80s was a conservative vehicle, with some refinements across the years it's nearly the same car 81-89, same design formula and size. while the competition experimented with downsizing and new technologies the Town Car stayed familiar and dependable. The 1990-97 followed the same principles and sold strong. But 98 on was too radical a redesign for many. 03+ restored some features. Town Car didn't change much after that and buyers stayed loyal. I see many original Town Car buyers still enjoying their Town Cars of all years.

Always loved Town Cars.. Ever since seeing the one our realtor had as a kid in the early 80's I asked my dad why we don't have a Town Car instead of the Camaro we had and he said those cars were for old farts! I hated the Camaro with the rear tranny hump splitting the back seat..I said one day when I grow up I will have one! Well I had a 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989 and a 2003! Loved them all aside from the 1985..all were used and in good to excellent condition aside from the 85.. My favorite styles were 85-89, 95-97 and 2003-2011..Loved my 2003.. It was like an old pair of comfortable shoes..it just felt like an extension of myself.. It just felt right..I loved that car! One feature I have yet to see on any car aside form a Lincoln is the power side vent window the small triangle that rolls down before the main side window does!

I bought a 1980 Cougar XR-7 and returned often to the dealership for Warranty work. I would be 6 cities away waiting for my car and I would be in heaven looking at the new Lincolns.

I absolutely LOVE the design of these cars. They have a very stately appearance. The last of the boxy Town Cars screamed panache. The front end looked so much like Rolls Royces, but still were distinctively Lincoln.

I inherited my dad's 1987 Lincoln Town Car in 1995. It was a nice, comfortable car with a good engine. The interior was fairly cheap though: the plastic door panels were already splitting after less than a decade (in spite of being garaged). And the car had a suspension squeak that couldn't be readily solved; a shop told me that FordMoCo had already stopped making the OEM plastic bushings for those at the time. And I finally decided to trade the car by 2000 because the air conditioner wasn't cooling the car, and at the time, switching over to R134 refrigerant was a pricey conversion. So these were nice cars, but could've been better.

I'm currently on my 4th Town Car. You just can't beat the ride. They rule the road when you're on a trip. Luggage for days in the trunk, which is universally measured in how many bodies you can fit back there.
